Maureen O’Connor: Former San
Diego Mayor Bet More Than $1
Billion as a Result of Gambling Addiction

As Maureen O’Connor stood in court Thursday somberly admitting over the course of years that she had bet a total of more than $1 billion in casinos due to her compulsive gambling, it was the sad culmination of an addiction that dismantled a vast fortune and left her broke and in failing health. The former mayor of San Diego — and widow of millionaire Jack-in-the-Box restaurant chain founder Robert Peterson, who died in 1994 — lost a total of $13 million to casinos,

Comments:
When I was a kid, I remember Maureen O´Connor as the hippie-chick councilwoman, with long flowing hair and doleful eyes. Today, she´s a nutbag old lady who can´t control her impulses. If she were a Republican, I´d say that was a shame. But I´m not surprised she is a Democrat, it´s how typical Dems deal with all cash sources.

The O´Conner´s I remember have had trouble with the law for decades. They were local celebrities growing up in San Diego back in the days when San Diego was a sleepy small town south of Los Angeles. I believe their celebrity came from the fact that it was a very large Catholic family and the kids were good swimmers. They kind of ended up like another large Catholic family who were celebrated and admired for their athletic prowess...ugh.

Once again we get a glimpse into that Granola bowl known as ´California´, where it´s demonstrated pretty well non-stop that what ain´t fruits and nuts is flakes...

And again, ya´ gotta´ love Time. If this had been some conservative mayor of a Southern town, the description would have been more like:

´Public servant has morals, ethics problems...´

It´ be pretty obtuse to think no ´public´ monies under her oversight weren´t frittered away...

No mention of party affiliation, even once, in the article, so she must be a Democrat.

I believe that I heard on the noon news today that she will not serve one day in prison. The sentence was probation plus as much restitution as possible.

"The economy and the social aspects are indivisible to us," commented on Tuesday the Minister of Petroleum and Mining Rafael Ramírez. "We are moving towards the creation of a different system," he added. Regarding the government´s so-called economic offensive, Ramírez stressed their new approach will focus on "production sectors so as to produce our own supplies and food." "Our economy has been under attack, and we will not wait until next year to take action; on the contrary, we have created a new exchange system, we have opened up new ways to allow the inflow of dollars," he stressed. India´s Supreme Court has created an official third sex for its transgender eunuchs and announced they will have a quota of government jobs and college places to help them overcome discrimination. The decision was met with jubilation by transgender charities who said it was a milestone in their fight against marginalisation in Indian society. "We are elated and thankful to the court," said Kalki Subramanium, a leading transgender rights activist. "The decision has come after a century of suppression and marginalisation by the legal and social systems. "This verdict is certainly landmark and a new beginning. The biggest challenge is the social recognition.

At least 12 people are dead and more than 2,000 homes have been destroyed by a large fire that wreaked havoc over the weekend in Valparaiso, Chile. Some 10,000 people have been forced to evacuate parts of the port city. Government spokesman Álvaro Elizalde says those figures are likely to go up as the fire continues to burn. The fire has been driven by strong winds, and efforts to fight the flames also have been complicated by the area´s steep terrain and lack of essential infrastructure, as NPR´s Lourdes Garcia-Navarro reports for our Newscast unit. She adds: "This is a city built on

Amnesty: President Obama often laments "our broken immigration system" as a reason for his failure to enforce its laws. But as a wave of illegals is about to descend here, the hard fact is that it´s his own policies that broke it. The nonpartisan Inter-American Development Bank and the Migration Policy Institute both reported optimal conditions for a big wave of illegal immigration into the U.S. from Mexico and Central America soon. Based on the slowdown in China´s economy, a recovery in U.S. low-skilled jobs such as construction, and rising U.S. interest rates, it´s fair enough.

After presenting at the Academy Awards this year, Kim Novak didn’t want to leave her house. The Hitchcock screen siren, 81, was too humiliated to venture from her home near the Rogue River in Oregon. She read the cruel posts and Internet snark about her appearance, and it was just too much. “It got to me like it gets kids and teenagers,” she told the Associated Press. The “Vertigo” actress, considered one of the great beauties in her day, posted a note on her Facebook wall Thursday, acknowledging that she’d gotten fat injections in her face and addressing her halted

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

When it comes to tracking the cost of Obama family vacations, there are two primary challenges. First, the Obamas are prolific jet-setters, so there are many details to track. Second, the Obama administration, clearly embarrassed by these lavish and frequent family vacations, stonewalls the release of records at every turn. But we have been relentless in pursuit of this information. Our attorneys file the lawsuits and make our case, and our investigators pour through pages of records and crunch the numbers. And the information we’ve uncovered – information that would otherwise remain under lock and key – shows that the

It’s the stuff of Westerns: a showdown on the desert plains, the big bad government against an underdog farmer. Though the story has only grabbed national headlines in the past several days, rancher Cliven Bundy has illegally grazed cattle on the Nevada land surrounding his farm for over 20 years. He hasn’t paid grazing fees since 1993, and refuses to renew the necessary grazing permit.(Snip)Rather than using the avenues and pathways presented to him, Bundy has staunchly declared his own law and allegiances. Unfortunately, reality doesn’t work this way. If only it did—we could rebel for paying stupid taxes, refuse to

A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." WASHINGTON — Former President Jimmy Carter joined fellow Nobel laureates Wednesday in opposing Keystone XL, insisting that approving the pipeline would trigger “more climate upheaval” around the globe. In an open letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, Carter and the nine other Nobel Peace Prize winners bluntly warned the leaders: “Your decision on the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline will define your climate legacy.” The missive, published as an advertisement in Politico, represents the first time Carter has taken a position on the $5.4 billion project and makes him the first former president to come

To "honor the dignity and work of immigrants," Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi helps Bishop Marc Andrus wash the feet of two children Thursday at Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Pelosi also used the occasion to talk about passing HR15 - bipartisan immigration legislation that her office says would "reduce the deficit by nearly $1 trillion, secure our borders, unite our families, protect our workers and provide an earned pathway to citizenship." The Democratic leader´s ceremony coincides with Pope Francis´ similar ceremony in Rome to mark Holy Week.
