| CHICAGO — At a high school near his own neighborhood here, President Obama on Friday will provide new details about an initiative to select 20 communities nationwide as laboratories for better coordination of federal, local, nonprofit and private-sector investments to revitalize long-distressed areas, according to administration officials. Mr. Obama had announced his proposal to designate the so-called Promise Zones during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night, but did not provide many details. As part of the effort,

Comments: Ahh yes, 0bama has another new program. He will do his usual blather that says nothing and it will boil down to fleecing the taxpayers for mo money to waste on another worthless, expensive program. He will then call Republicans racist (in an offhanded way of course) if they don´t go along.

From the article: "Much of the anti-poverty proposal, which is one of several initiatives that Mr. Obama is calling “ladders of opportunity” to help more Americans reach the middle class, would actually not require new legislation or spending."
You want a ladder of opportunity? Don´t get pregnant if you are not married and have no way of supporting yourself and your child. And graduate high school.
That´s the ladder of opportunity, Obama. DAMMIT!

Sort of what the Republicians wanted to do some 20 years ago with tax incentives but were stopped by the progressives? No, I´m sure Obama wants to make the areas worse not better. More of what caused the problme is not a solution but more of the same stupid policies is all Obama ever wants to do.

All business done outside the "Promise Zone" will be taxed and regulated at a higher rate to make the Zone appear better.
Like "Green Energy" or Health Care ....the trick is to kill the alternatives.

Just read the history of Progress Plaza in Philadelphia. Then go to YouTube and see the implosions of some of the public housing towers which were top of the line when they were built.

Kind of like Enterprise Zones which exist in a number of states. This looks like a way for the Feds to take them over and hand out goodies to their pals.

Why doesn´t he just call it "the Promised Land" and be done with it? This is just another ´get whitey´ scheme to pay off his ignorant, lazy base.

...But wait! Van Jones(?) & U.S. Rep. Cleaver(D-Mo.) already tried that idea a few years ago in the old neighborhood in K.C. Mo., and the decay & crime situation in that, ´Green Zone,´ has become even more dire than ever. Better check the results of that fiasco before extending that already failed statist policy throughout the entire country! -YIKES!!!

#7 beat me to it - this is nothing but more reparations. The only way any of these communities will ever be "revitalized" is for blacks to take responsibility for their heinous culture and fix it.

So, how did "long-distressed areas" become "long-distressed areas"?
Maybe it´s that sneaky Higgs boson the physics boffins have been chasing?

Definition of a "Promise Zone": Urban areas controlled (ruined) by local democrat politicians and voting 80% democrat or greater on election day.

Oh, and this expansion is because the Great Society programs are working so well?
The age-old HUD housing program to mix "moderate and low income" homeowners in one neighborhood really worked. Not. It just turned "moderate income" neighborhoods into slums. (This I witnessed first-hand when as a young couple we were renting a wonderful duplex on a street of brick duplexes with beautifully landscaped yards and children playing safely outside. Changed practically overnight. It took no time at all for us to become literally the only Anglos on the streeet, and shortly our house was robbed and we, too, exited.)
Obama´s plan is wrong on so many levels.

Maybe Obama will get American and foreign companies like Apple to move say to a Detroit inner-city "Promise Zone" to train and hire inner-city residents to put their electronic gadgets like i-pads together. But if that were to happen, and all those inner-city people were earning a wage and off welfare, what would be the next mission in life for the socialist urban liberal Democrats?

Just another way to direct public money to Democrat cronies and unions.
The outcome of similar projects in the past is the best indication of howwell these Promise Zones will work. There are plenty of examples from the US and EU and from the old Soviet Bloc.
Howver even studying the outcomes from roughly seven decades is unlikely to be of much value becaue the consultants and academics hired to prepare the studies will be the same gang that has predicted every single project of the past would be a glorious success.
And glorious success is what they will predict again. And again.

CBS News was interviewing Barbara Garcia shortly after a massive tornado demolished her house with her and her dog inside. She was in the middle of telling reporter Anna Werner about how she survived the storm, but she couldn´t find her dog - until he miraculously appeared in the debris right behind her. The Democratic Party´s edge over the GOP on who the public trusts more on ethics and corruption issues has flipped in the wake of the IRS and Benghazi scandals, according to Rasmussen Reports. Not only do voters trust Republicans more now, they have their highest level of confidence in the GOP and the lowest level in Democrats in seven months. While the Democrats had an eight-point "trust advantage" over Republicans a month ago, Rasmussen´s latest poll said that edge has disappeared and now the GOP has a two-point advantage. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew told the Senate Banking Committee Tuesday the IRS has to be "beyond politics," and he warned that the "cure could be worse than the disease" if that line is crossed in the attempt to fix the agency´s problems. "The thing I will not do -- I will not cross that line into the administration of the tax system, because the cure could be worse than the disease. We need to make sure there´s no political involvement in the administration of the tax system," Lew said. And while the treasury secretary is responsible for

Danger. Danger. Al Qaeda’s Syrian wing also known as “rebels” bent on overthrowing Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad (mirroring the Saudi, the Obama administration and Republican Senator John McCain’s position), have taken over the oilfields that once belonged to Assad. If that wasn’t bad enough it gets worse. We are a hair trigger away from World War III. Reportedly Assad is preparing missile strikes against Tel Aviv if Syria is attacked again. Meanwhile, back in Obama’s America, don’t call Libya’s weapon recovery program “buyback” that then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton funded using $40 million of your tax dollars

The current scene doesn´t look so great. We´ve got the Benghazi scandal, which Bob Woodward has compared to Watergate, we´ve got the IRS scandal, where Democratic members of Congress are saying the IRS director lied, we´ve got the FBI AP-snooping scandal, we´ve got the HHS "private donation" shakedown scandal, and, of course, there´s the still-unfolding Pigford scandal that has funneled billions to grifters. It seems like everything is in tatters. And, in a way, it is. But serious as these problems are, they´re all short-term things. So while at the moment a lot of our political leaders

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.

In Tuesday´s Senate hearings into the ever-widening IRS scandal, outgoing IRS chief, Steve Miller, acknowledged that the planted question that broke the story last week was his idea. The "planted question" refers to the way in which the IRS chose to release the findings of the Inspector General´s report a week ago Friday. It was an unusual way to deliver bad news, even in a town known for its selective leaks, Friday-night news dumps and wag-the-dog distractions. The Internal Revenue Service, apparently determined to get out ahead of an inspector general report critical of its handling of tax exemptions

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement
