MOBILE, Ala. — A Carnival cruise ship disabled for five days in the Gulf of Mexico finally pulled into a dock in Mobile, Ala., on Thursday night, ending a nightmarish ocean odyssey for more than 4,000 people on board. (Snip) "The crew is wonderful," Erwin said. "They did the best they could. They would have made some different decisions if they had it to do over again, but so would most of the quarterbacks that play in the Super Bowl."

These poor people landed in Mobile late yesterday, in a lovely city, the terminal within 6 blocks of more than 6000 comfortable hotel rooms, with clean sheets and hot showers, with great meals within a short walk, or even room service, and sympathetic and hospitable Mobilians ready to welcome the influx of refugees with open arms. So, what did Carnival do? They spurned the southern hospitality, and instead arranged to herd the long suffering passengers onto buses for an all-night ride, sans showers or meals, to Galveston, or to New Orleans, only three hours away...
And then the bus broke down halfway to NOLA.
Way to go, Carnival! I hope there are a lot of people who now know that this is NOT the cruise line you wish to patronize for your next luxurious dream vacation!!!!

I am shocked that Carnival did not allow folks to rest and recover in Mobile.
With Mardi Gras over some days ago, there are lots of rooms available in the area.
Alls well that ends well?
If you want sewage, see you in court...
for the en-suing aftermath.
Big bucks, ya know.

From the Carnival web site:
"Carnival Triumph guests were given the option of boarding buses directly to Galveston or Houston, Texas, or to spend the night in a hotel in New Orleans, where they could rest before flying out on private charters the next day. Carnival will cover all travel related and incidental expenses."

Right. And recovering there in lovely, hospitable Mobile, and boarding a charter flight at either of Mobile´s two very fine airports, for some secret reason, was NOT an option. People who chose to do that would do so at their own expense. Carnival, in fact, had made a public point of disparaging their host city. Most odd.
Carnival? Sounds more like a three ring circus. BLEAH!!!

The article is long on cheerleading for the crew (whom I assume did do a good job/best they could) and does not mention this other problem at all.

I lived in Fairhope, across Mobile Bay and cannot understand why Carnival shunned Mobile.
The poor PAX from that ship deserved to be in clean comfortable rooms with showers ASAP.

Carnival must have some huge discount arrangement with New Orleans hotels
to insist on herding people onto buses to drive three more hours to the Big Easy.
Seems nuts to me.
But that´s just Carnival.
Specializing in bad publicity these days.

Treasury officials were made aware in June 2012 that the IRS inspector general was reviewing the office that handles tax-exempt applications, but a letter from October shows that the inspector general did not highlight the audit as a top concern for the agency. In a memo dated October 15, 2012, to then-Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner about IRS challenges for 2013, Inspector General J. Russell George noted other problem areas, but made no mention of the investigation taking place at the time of the agency´s intense scrutiny of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.

It eventually comes down to who — who at the IRS was responsible for targeting conservative and Tea Party groups for special scrutiny. Because, after all, you can’t put a “system” in jail. You can’t put a report in prison. You can’t indict a department for corruption. At the end of the day it’s people who are responsible for using the enormous powers of the Internal Revenue Service to go after other people and groups because of their political beliefs. U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas) told the tale of one of his constituents who applied for tax-exempt status for her Tea Party group in July 2010.

Inspector General Russell George said he informed a deputy at the Treasury Department in June of 2012 about the probe into the IRS. The Treasury Department confirmed the timeline but said they did not know the details of the investigation until last week.(Snip)Marcus Owens ran the tax-exempt division at the IRS for 10 years. He said it isn´t difficult to figure out who´s doing what at the agency.

In House testimony Friday, former Acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller explained that the IRS mistakes in handling applications for non-profit status from tea party groups were due, in large part, to a flood of applications following the Citizens United decision. Miller said the targeting was a botched attempt to centralize the process to account for the increased workload. There were fewer applications in 2010, when the IRS began targeting conservative groups, than the year before, however. (Snip)Moreover, the IRS reportedly abandoned the targeting in early 2012. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.
