| The euro has started the year on a relatively positive note. But today saw a whole raft of negative stats and abysmal growth figures coming out of the eurozone. This was a reminder of the bloc’s greatest challenge: how to reverse the trend of slow, grinding economic decline. According to Eurostat, Q4 2012 saw the eurozone economy shrink by a massive 0.6 percent. Germany hit the average, posting a contraction of 0.6 percent, Italy 0.9 percent and Portugal 1.8 percent. Adding to the pain, the Italian statistics agency confirmed the country’s growth at -2.2

Germany and France have been rivals, if not enemies for a thousand years. Their peoples are completely different in temperament. The past seventy years of peace have been exceptional.

Nato has handed over security for the whole of Afghanistan for the first time since the Taliban were ousted in 2001. At a ceremony in Kabul, President Hamid Karzai said that from Wednesday "our own security and military forces will lead all the security activities". Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.
