| WASHINGTON – America’s largest combat veterans group is worried the creation of a new medal for drone strikes and cyber-warfare could bestow higher honor on those using a joystick to kill terrorists than soldiers wounded on the battlefield. The Distinguished Warfare Medal, announced Wednesday, would rank higher than the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, which is given to servicemembers killed or wounded in battle. The new medal would rank immediately below the Distinguished Flying Cross. But to some, like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, creating a non-combat medal

I once knew a Korean War Vet who told me he declined TWO purple Heart Medals. He had told his mother back home, that he had a "desk" job. Didn´t want to upset her.

Since, as we know from Obama, he personally meets with the NSA, CIA, and Joint Chiefs every day to review that day´s "Kill List" of drone targets, should we be surprised if Obama awards the first Distinguished Warfare Medal to.....

Nice to know this ranks higher than the Bronze Stars with Oak Leaf Cluster and V device and Purple Heart my dad earned in Viet Nam during two tours as a helicopter pilot...........
The military already has awards for this - the Army has the ARCOM and MSM and the other services have comparable awards.
This is totally unnecessary.......

Unnecessary yes, but now some paper pushing officer can pad the old resume on the new award they designed and got authorized. This is the same reason the uniforms change every other year.

There were articles about geral petraeus, pointing out that the huge amount of ribbons he displayed were all non combat related.
I would classify this new award as non combat related. If you are a combat medic, you recieve a medal for that (used to be in the shape of a stretcher) but if you are back at the hospital, doing good work, you are not eligible for the medal, because you were not physically exposed to the dangers of combat.

Medals are normally used to reward valor on the battlefield not for skill with a joystick or the ability to sit in a chair for long stretches at a time. This kind of "pat on the back" prize is for dogs and horses, not for men! You want a medal, join the infantry and volunteer for combat. Oh and don´t accept a purple heart for a piece of rice in your butt and claim to be a war hero. We already have one of those maggots!

Viet Nam vet and I am afraid I have to agree with the VFW. But then in the past two years we have openly gays in the military and most recently ground combat arms opened up to women. Not because we need women in combat, but because it isn´t fair that the guys who daily put their lives on the line in combat may get promoted quicker than a non-combat type.

Hey, why stop with the drone medal? Let´s give all the REMF´s medals for bravery and dictate that the REMF medal is equal to medals given to folks getting shot at. Civilians should get medals too for playing video games. It is just the same as combat.

As a rule, #5, combat medics don´t need an ´extra´ medal. Many of them already come home with well-deserved Silver Stars and Purple Hearts...

One of two men allegedly being questioned in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings was shot and killed by an FBI agent in Florida on Tuesday, (Snip)A friend of Ibragim Todashev said he and Todashev were being investigated as part of the Boston bombings. He said Todashev, 27, knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because both were MMA fighters. The man claims he and Todashev were interviewed by the FBI for nearly three hours on Tuesday. The friend said he left the interview, and when he came back to the apartment he found that there had been a shooting.
