| Kim Kardashian and Kanye West had a misunderstanding with Transportation Security Administration officials at JFK International Airport in New York on Tuesday, but apparently the whole thing wasn´t their fault. Chalk that one up to being rich and famous and likely to get favors. The reality TV starlet and her rapper boyfriend/baby daddy were on their way back from Rio de Janeiro, where they were attending Rio Carnival. Wouldn´t you be thrilled if you were on that flight and it was delayed for an hour. The only thing that surprised me was these two don´t have their own private plane. They certainly could afford it. What everyone sees in them I will never understand.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says it wants as many as 20 percent of its workers to "telework," use an "alternative work schedule," or do both, in order to "reduce green house gas emissions," decrease "employee stress," and give these government workers more time for "planning and preparing healthy meals." So says one of the HHS "performance measures" detailed in an appendix to the department´s latest strategic plan. HHS´s performance measure "4.D.05" says: "Increase the percent employees on telework or on Alternative Work Schedule." Telework means working from home via phone and computer.

It is most often used by the powerful on anyone less powerful as a symbolic sacrifice. Steven Miller, the now former acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, is the latest victim of ritual sacrifice. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday. A healthcare provider has sued the Internal Revenue Service and 15 of its agents, charging they wrongfully seized 60 million medical records from 10 million Americans. The name of the provider is not yet known, United Press International said. But Courthouse News Service said the suit claims the agency violated the Fourth Amendment in 2011, when agents executed a search warrant for financial data on one employee – and that led to the seizure of information on 10 million, including state judges. The search warrant did not specify that the IRS could take medical information, UPI said.
