| As an immigrant to the United States, and thus a sideline spectator of the panorama that is American society, (snip) I have been fascinated by the characteristics of the American left as compared to their counterparts in the rest of the world. While on the surface there may appear to be similarities, at least on a so-called philosophical basis, there are, however, virtually none when it comes to the motivation and personality quirks of the American left.

It has long surprised me that more notice has not been given to the transparently adolescent quality of the Sixties brand of Leftism. Sex drugs and rock and roll; don´t trust anybody over thirty; if it feels good, do it etc. are not particularly subtle signs of immaturity. Neither is the rejection of the study and hard work required to acquire a meaningful education. One might have thought that the juvenile turn of academia would have been self-evident to all when courses and entire disciplines(!) began to be devoted to trendy, frothy, superficial and easy things like movies, TV and pop stars, not to mention the frivolous "X Studies" programs that are no use to anyone and demand neither intellectual ability nor willingness to study. All of this smacks of adolescence. Most telling, however, would seem to be the relentless, indeed almost comical emphasis on sex.
Playing political radical, hero and heroine of social and economic justice, savior of the world etc. etc. etc. was and remains far more interesting than learning anything of consequence. Reading the tracts and polemics of characters like Saul Alinsky and expressing righteous indignation at the injustices of society was exciting. Hillary Clinton, who has never done anything in her life but play an important, socially conscious and heroic person, is an example of what happens when children are served such rubbish in place of the more substantial fare of traditional liberal education.
Then there is weed. My guess is that smoking weed prolongs adolescence. It cannot be a coincidence that marijuana use, while not confined to the Left, seems to be far more common and important there.

McCann describes American liberals as spoiled children. He has a point, but this is a big problem for conservatives. Spoiled children don´t care about facts or the truth. The conventional wisdom is now that it´s not cool to be a Republican. They can´t tell you why, but they will tell you they would never vote for anyone except a Democrat. How can anyone campaign against such arrogant ignorance?

I have an Ex Friend, a Doctor from Poland who is as Lib as they come...I suppose he learned NOTHING from his parents and the Communists in Poland.
I came to the conclusion, and I mentioned it to him, that every generation thinks ´THEY´ are smarter than their parents/grandparents and that THEY fall for the canard that ´they just didn´t spend enough money solving the problems´. I also pointed out the Left never solves problems, they make them worse and on top of that make dupes/useful idiots of those that believe their crap.

#4 is so right: willful ignorance, arrogance, and irrational thinking are a very difficult situation to overcome. It is critical to motivate the sane voters to see the dangers and go vote. Vast numbers can overcome the fraud.

I don´t think you will find any real individualists on the left. Most are complainers who have a chip on their shoulder, like most blacks, against some outside influence that is the cause of their ´suffering.´ They view their situation as an injustice. They seek out others in the same quagmire for comfort and reinforcement. These are not the people that make America great.

I think that is why liberals love Barney so much. The kids on the program always have what they need to do the next fun thing. Barney is always hovering around them (like the government) and is credited with making all the material things magically appear.
What message is that? It is that someone else will provide for your needs. All you have to do is love Barney and have fun!

Excuse the follow-up post but just because the muling, puking infants on the left buy into a foolish notion like socialism is no reason to give the ganja a bad name.
Libertarians (conservative purists) are ready to fight for your right to live your life as you see fit an indulge both your best and worst habits.
If you are not free to screw up then you are not free.
The list of ´acceptable drugs´ is long and well known....coffee,booze,tobacco..etc.

I saw a very informative short movie on Hillbuzz several months ago. Kevin DuJan was interviewed along with former Leftists. Bill Ayers was interviewed and I was surprised at how twitchy and nervous he was. He was very guarded with his reponses and kept looking over his shoulder, even though a wall was at his back. Made me wonder how secure he really is with his Radical Marxist Weatherman philosophy, even after all of these years.

I REALLY enjoyed this article as it so perfectly describes the mindset and attitudes of a couple very close relatives that inhabit the Bay Area. My sis and one of my daughters do not really like to think, they like to be TOLD what to think. They got that way by living their lives in SF and Marin County where e v e r y o n e is a lib. They know nothing... but sincerely think they know it all because they inform themselves by reading the SF Chron and the online NY Times headlines. Their peers tell them they are enlightened so they believe it. I love them both but family gatherings...well, you can guess.

Agree with #13, except that, including libs, almost everyone in the Bay Area agrees and states that the Chron is now nothing more than a struggling tabloid.

David Horowitz, who himself grew up in a leftist family and was a ´60s radical, saw through the American Left´s radical destructive agenda years ago and has written extensively about it. His, ´´Barack Obama´s Rules For Revolution, The Alinsky Model,´´ seems to be playing out before our very eyes. It begins with an election eve 2008 quote from 0bama:
´´We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America,´´ ...He sure is trying, eh?

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. What was a DHS agent doing at the San Jose Tea Party protest? (snip) they weren´t just spying on us in San Jose and monitoring us in San Francisco, they were watching us throughout the entire state

Remember president Obama´s first pitch of the MLB 2010 season at the Washington Nationals ballpark? It sailed towards the home team dugout. While he couldn´t throw a baseball within ten feet of home plate -- even if it took a double bounce on the way in -- Obama has tossed perfect incendiary strikes inside his own clubhouse, sending his entire team to the disabled list, demoted to the minor leagues, or banned from the game for life. In fact Obama´s entire liberal-progressive league has forfeited the rest of the season -- and then some.

Hey, liberals! Obama thinks you are stupid. Yeah, he really does. He knew Benghazi was terrorism before he didn´t know it was terrorism. Addressing a question about Benghazi in his press conference Monday, May 13, 2013, Obama´s "logic" really made an impression: "The Day after it happened I acknowledged that this was an act of terrorism." What person ever says what he really knows at a funeral? Eulogies bearing little or no resemblance to the deceased or to the facts are trotted out by people who are often bad actors, who though they know better, lie anyway. It´s almost acceptable behavior. But any truth about the deaths of U.S. Ambassador Christ Stevens and three other Americans appears to have been put six feet under as far as our current administration is concerned. Somewhere, Andrew Breitbart is smiling. You can almost see the metaphorical light bulbs going on in bubbles over the heads of liberal media figures. Obama loyalists are expressing outrage at the subpoenaing of the phone records of 20 lines serving over a hundred AP reporters. Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell was convicted yesterday on three counts of first-degree murder, not to mention a slew of other charges, including involuntary manslaughter (for the death of 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar), infanticide, and abortions past Pennsylvania´s legal limit. (snip)in a culture dominated by the 24-hour news cycle, it will be easy for Americans to consider the abortion issue closed with the Gosnell verdict. The pro-life movement´s challenge, as [Lila] Rose says, is to keep the American people focused on how common Gosnell-like practices are in the abortion industry, and on all the unsung victims abortion

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
