| A teenager who lost most of her skin and her vision in a horrifying adverse reaction to Children’s Motrin has on Wednesday won $109million from the drug’s manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson. Samantha Reckis, who was only seven years old when she took the children’s ibuprofen to combat a fever, suffered a rare but potentially fatal side effect that caused her to go blind and 90 percent of her skin to fall off. In total, the Plymouth, Massachusetts Superior Court jury ruled that Ms Reckis and her parents should be awarded at total of $109million by Johnson & Johnson and its

Comments: For those unaware--Motrin is ibuprofin.
A very sad situation all around. I notice that the lawsuit took ten years to come to trial but because death can be one of the outcomes, I expect defendants were hoping the girl would die before the matter came to court.
A rare complication but still one to bear in mind. The article doesn´t specify if it can happen to adults too

Is it really the pill´s maufacturer´s fault that a person has a weird reaction to it? Did they have prior notice kids might be at risk for such a reaction?

Agree No. 1, it used to be that companies had to be negligent to incur damages. This was a totally bizarre, unique reaction to a drug that millions have taken with no ill effects. It´s horrible, but does the company deserve to be punished?

Posters #1 and #2... agree completely. J&J didn´t set out to cause this reaction in this one 8-year-old. Who ever heard of this anyway!?
I feel bad for the girl (imagine losing your skin!!) and her parents who were helpless watching their precious child suffer like this..... but it was genetics, not Johnson & Johnson, that set this in motion.

im confused on this one...J&J did not willfully manufacture the product to do this...but,were they aware this could happen and didnt say anything?..i guess i reserve judgement on this...i cannot imagine watching this happen to anyone, let alone my children...

My heart breaks for the girl but everyone is aware of risks with any medication. Should Motrin pay her for her reaction - maybe a little to ease her life a bit but $109 million is over the top.

Playing devil´s advocate here.... Should Skippy and Jiffy peanut butter be held liable because someone died as a result of an allergic reaction? After all,Skippy and Jiffy were well aware that someone could die eating their products.
For every food product, clothing fiber or chemical out there, there is someone, somewhere who will die or have an otherwise adverse reaction to it. I. penicillin...... I personally have a very bad reaction to sodium pentathol. Any surgery that I have, could be my last. And I dont blame the drug manufacturers,I blame faulty genes.

When you question the decision of the jury, you are leaving out the deciding factor. It was a massachusetts jury. Don´t ask for sanity in that state.

One observation of reality that struck me is that businesses don´t pay taxes; they collect them.
I submit that they don´t really pay lawsuit damages... we all will.

According to the article the parents are divorced and have each been awarded $6.5 million, while the girl herself was awarded $50 million. It´s early and I can´t figure out how that adds up to $109 million.
Also, the mother says "‘I’m not so sure that Richard is going to allocate his portion of the funds for her’ - sounds like this poor child has had her share of emotional assault along with this horrific drug reaction.

The jury was obviously sending a message with the $109,000,000 judgement. The verdict will be appealed and most likely settled out of court for a much smaller amount.

Even if they knew it, does that mean Motrin has to come off the market? If so, probably everything has to come off the market. If not, the award should be reasonable compensation for actual monetary losses and costs, not punitive damages.

That ridiculously high award is just going to drive up the price of my health care. And worse yet it may end up banning the ibuprofen I just took for my headache that this article gave me. What will be left for me to take. Acetaminophen? Liver damage. Asprin? Don´t even get me started of the dangers of that one.

There is no medication on earth to which some person will have an allergic reaction. None. That doesn´t mean that a medicine is bad. It is just bad for that (rare) person.

With the internet and search engines, there is no reason for someone to see something like Stevens-Johnson and not go and find out what it is and who might be at risk.

Drug manufacturers know well that there is strict liability--no showing of negligence necessary. These cases are only about causation and damages.

A 91-year-old WWII veteran fighting to prevent his daughter from evicting him from his Ohio home has raised more than $138,000 from online donors to buy back his home, easily surpassing his goal. John Potter says he´s ´amazed´ by the more than 5,000 people who have donated toward his original $125,000 goal while telling his granddaughter, Jaclyn Fraley, ´I never knew people could love an old man so much.´ After Mr Potter´s daughter sent him an eviction notice earlier this year, Ms Fraley organized the desperate fundraiser for him in April while sharing with the public his dire situation.

On May 3 1999, Moore was one of several cities left devastated after 74 tornadoes touched down across Oklahoma and Kansas in just 21 hours. Following a path similar to yesterday´s lethal twister, the storms that struck the city 14 years ago to the month left 46 dead and 800 injured. Due to the high number of mobile homes and less robust housing in this part of the US, more than 8,000 homes were destroyed. It caused almost $1.5 billion in property damage making it the fourth costliest in the world. The National Weather Service also recorded wind speeds

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama says he is instructing his disaster response team to get tornado victims in Oklahoma everything they need "right away." Obama calls the devastation that tore through the Oklahoma City suburbs, quote, "one of the most destructive tornados in history," even though he said the extent of the damage is still unknown. Obama spoke Tuesday after an Oval Office briefing on the latest developments from his disaster response team and as Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Craig Fugate was heading to Oklahoma. Dan Pfeiffer’s job title is “senior advisor to the president for strategy and communications.” And on five television shows Sunday, he all too clearly communicated the White House’s strategy of remaining unclear on pertinent details about scandals now dogging President Barack Obama. “Fox News” host Chris Wallace pressed Mr. Pfeiffer on “one lingering question” about last Sept. 11’s terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya: “What did the president do that night?” After Mr. Pfeiffer tried a few end runs, Mr. Wallace asked: “Was he in the Situation Room?”

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.
