| LONDON - Turbo-charged parents still running their university-aged children´s schedules, laundry and vacations could be doing more harm than good with a study on Wednesday showing these students were more likely to be depressed and dissatisfied with life. Researcher Holly Schiffrin from the University of Mary Washington in Virginia found so-called helicopter parenting negatively affected college students by undermining their need to feel autonomous and competent.

I was always grateful to my parents for letting me manage my own life. They had prepared me for it by example long before I was college age.

This is one of those ´which came first, the chicken or the egg?´ arguments. Far more mediocre students go to college these days, with the push for everyone to go to college. The hyper-parents may be the only way they qualified for college and that may be the only way they can make it through courses at college.
So...did the hyper parents cause the depression, or did the depression cause the parents to by hyper?

Helicopter "parenting" takes many forms. There are distinct groups of students in today´s colleges that are helicoptered. Those students that have an "in", such as those that are the opposite sides of the same coin... Children of Alumni (often referred to as "Legacy students")and the other side...Affirmative Action (diversity) students. These two groups have sponsors and faculty to "mentor´ (read:enable them) to success. Things are just done for them. Their tuition paid by someone else (alum parents) or the college (tuition waivers) and/or grants and other incentives based on optics such as color, ethnicity or just plain "who is your daddy". They don´t need to worry much about their parents doing laundry or other earthy problems, with their financial backup, they pay for those services. And as far as scheduling and making sure they get the right course and faculty...their mentors (proxy parents)can easily stand in for that duty. Then we have the students who go the Ratlin route scam. They get extra time during exams. They rate tutors and reasonable accommodations because of their leaning handicap. And of course, no mention to future employers that Johnny or Joanie needed more time and meds to compete with the other students. Smart though, getting a better GPA is what counts.
Then there is the average Joe group...the ones that have no angle, no ´connections" or "mentors" to make it easier for them. These are the ones you don´t really notice, but get through somehow. G-d bless the child who has his own.
Helicopter parents come in many forms. The article mentions the more overt type...but there are other forms of helicopting, such as the parents/proxy parents of the connected/diversity/Ratlin students. This form is just as destructive, but elegantly nuanced and often unnoticed.

MOORE, Okla. Authorities have clarified and significantly downgraded the number of homes damaged or destroyed in this week´s tornado in an Oklahoma City suburb. Oklahoma City Police Department spokesman Dexter Nelson said Thursday that the most recent count indicates that 1,200 homes in the city and the suburb of Moore were affected by Monday´s storm. The mayor of Oklahoma City announced at a news conference Wednesday that as many as 13,000 homes had been destroyed or damaged. There was no immediate explanation for the differing estimates.

Abuse Of Power: Any scandal investigation that expects a "Eureka!" moment, a White House e-mail, or Oval Office smoking gun will be misguided. In fact, the dots are already connected directly to the president. Barack Obama is not foolish enough to have a tape recording system hidden in his desk. And his administration staff are not careless enough to send one another incriminating e-mails. If the president was behind the IRS unlawfully harassing conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status, we can be sure the communications were all sotto voce and in persona, like any good Chicago political operator.
