Pope resigns: Peter Turkson
reveals vision for the Church
and ´alternative lifestyles´

Cardinal Peter Turkson, a 64-year-old Ghanaian prelate, is the bookmaker´s early favourite to succeed Pope Benedict XVI. He told The Daily Telegraph Tuesday that his biggest challenge, should he be elected, would be to maintain an orthodox Catholic doctrine while "at the same time knowing how to apply it so that you do not become irrelevant in a world that has continuous changes". Cardinal Turkson, who holds one of the most important jobs in the Roman Curia and has been repeatedly promoted by Pope Benedict, was quick to take a conservative line on gay marriage and other "alternative lifestyles".

Comments:
By talking to the press prematurely, Cardinal Turkson gives the appearance at best, of naiveté, and at worst, of campaigning, which will exclude him from consideration at the conclave. At any rate, I believe it is likely that after almost 35 years, the cardinals will elect another Italian.

This guy is an idiot. He´s the one whose office wrote that report calling for a global central bank to ensure ´fairness.´ He´s just like his countryman Kofi Annan. He´s not pope material. The guy shouldn´t even be in the public eye.

Maybe the Kenyan president can give him a "Shout Out" and help him with some of
those patented campaign techniques.

Since when does God change to accommodate a changing world?

Let me guess, the Cardinal has evolved about alternative lifestyles.
Maybe he´ll borrow Obama´s god voice reverb-ampliphier.

Well, if past history is any indication,"He who enters the conclave as Pope, leaves it as a cardinal." Yes, the cardinals do "campaign" but the campaigning is subtle and sub rosa. If Peter, Cardinal Turkson wanted to ensure he´s not elected pope, campaigning openly like this is a sure way to stay a cardinal.

FTA: ...maintain an orthodox Catholic doctrine while "at the same time knowing how to apply it so that you do not become irrelevant in a world that has continuous changes".

Rut-roh. That could end badly. Very badly. Yo, Pete! Call in a rabbi or two or three [no offense] and have a discussion about human nature across the millennia. Get the scoop on how human nature "changed" by some folks who study/studied it like very few others. ´K?

Thanks for good posts above. Hope to see more about ol´ Pete and other contenders [not meant flatteringly] and prospects. Ronald Reagan made the Presidency more important in the world. Stinky made it a liability to Americans and to the world´s many victim-populations.

The Papacy likewise is charged with possibilities both positive and negative, despite having "no [military] divisions" to call into battle. [Sure.]

I´m not Catholic but to hear a Cardinal talk in terms of being relevent in a world of changing lifestyles leads me to wonder. Pedophilia, abortion, homosexual marriages may be ideas bandied about on Oprah but I think God has pretty much established his position already.

I am not of the Catholic faith. What I see are those that want to change the teachings of the church. They want a Pope that okays abortion, gays, same sex marriage. This Pope is only following the teachings of the Bible. While man may accept change, God does not. It was wrong then and still is.

Barak Hussein the Obama, Peter Cardinal the TurkSon. What the former is doing to destroy America, does the latter envision to destroy Catholicism?

Some over-reacting here, perhaps.

Of course the Church has to find a way to be relevant and evangelize in a secularizing Western world. That´s exactly what JP II did by reaching out to young people, going places Popes didn´t usually visit, writing extensively, etc. No watering down of dogma--in fact, he doubled down in many areas.

No, "God doesn´t change" but the Church always has...or do you think the Church resembles in any way the Church of, say, the 4th Century when the Creed was written?

Keep mind that all of the voting Cardinals were appointed by either JP II or Benedict; not a lot of libs there. The Catholic Church will remain a bulwark...unlike, say, the spate of "non-denominational" flavors of the week.

Well we were all stunned that this country elected Obama in the first place, and completely devastated that he was re-elected after 4 years of policies that are destroying the country. Why would be be sure that this guy won´t be able to follow the same path?

God has a plan. If you don´t confess Jesus as your Lord yet, please hurry.

A Cardinal that enters a conclave anticipating being elected Pope, leaves the conclave a Cardinal.

A big self-promotion article popped up on a Christian website before the ink on the good Pope´s resignation documents was even dry. Cardinal Turkson´s statements and utter lack of humility really makes you wonder about what has happened to the Cardinal selection process. This is most unseemly, to say the least.

The MSM are treating this process as if it were just another worldly political campaign, affirming or discrediting potential choices based on how well their presumed ideology conforms to the secular-´progressive´ priorities of the press. Much the way they report (or overlook) certain candidates during each party´s primaries, to choose for us who our candidates should be.

Ignore what the networks and syndicates report about the papal succession story. At best, it will miss the mark. More likely, it will skew reality to fit their pre-conceived conclusions.

"Be not conformed to this corrupt generation," Jesus is quoted as instructing his disciples. That exhortation is as applicable and important today as it ever was.

Is Turkson going to be the first affirmative action pope? One shouldn´t intrigue for the office.

Don´t know where you got your information, #1.

In this article, Turkson sounds like a good, strong conservative.

Reply 22 - Posted by: Ida Lil, 2/13/2013 11:09:45 PM     (No. 9175200)

Perhaps Peter Turkson only has eyes for the power he would gain as the Pope instead of setting them on the will of the Lord.
If the Lord decides the issue of succession then perhaps the Turkson choice will be because the Lord intends to chastise either the man or world.
Pope Benedict is a very humble man to give up the trappings of power and place his final years in communion with our savior Jesus the Christ.I am not a Catholic but can absolutely honor and admire such a man.

PS: Cardinal Turkson isn´t even on the long list to become the next Holy Father.
My bet is that one of these three will be elected:
Cardinal Carrera (Mexico)
Cardinal Ouellet (Canada)
or Cardinal Antonelli (Italy).

San Francisco park workers and volunteers spent much of Sunday picking up and hauling away 10,000 pounds of garbage strewn all over the eastern part of Golden Gate Park known as Hippie Hill, the remnants of Saturday´s annual yet unofficial pot-smoking bacchanalia. But this year´s annual celebration - which falls each year on April 20 and is known as "420" - drew a larger-than-average crowd of between 10,000 and 15,000 revelers on the warm weekend day. They proceeded to smoke, drink, eat and rack up more than $10,000 in costs for city crews to clean up the mess

Rio de Janeiro - During a Mass on April 2 last year to mark the 30th anniversary of the start of the war, Bergoglio called for the vindication of "all" of those who fought against the British over the Falklands Islands. "We come to pray for those who have fallen, sons of the homeland who set out to defend his mother, the homeland, to claim the country that is theirs and they were usurped," he said. Obama administration officials who were in key positions on Sept. 11, 2012, acknowledge that a range of mistakes were made the night of the attacks on the U.S. missions in Benghazi, and in messaging to Congress and the public in the aftermath. The officials spoke to CBS News in a series of interviews and communications under the condition of anonymity so that they could be more frank in their assessments. They do not all agree on the list of mistakes and it's important to note that they universally claim that any errors or missteps did not cost lives and reflect "incompetence rather than malice or cover up.

In the wake of one of the worst abuses of government power in recent history, many are rushing to frame the Internal Revenue Service scandal as simply an attack on conservative activists. That view risks creating a partisan political football and misses a fundamentally scarier abuse that exceeds the scandals of Watergate or any other prior government abuse. The IRS has admitted that since May 2010 it targeted grassroots-conservative organizations that had applied for tax-exempt status, unfairly subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny due to their political leanings. Such groups were told they were required to comply with IRS requests,

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.

The lawmaker leading the charge to investigate the Benghazi terror attack on Friday subpoenaed the co-author of a report that slammed the State Department but didn´t interview Hillary Clinton. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday. The subpoena comes in the wake of a series of acrimonious public exchanges this week between the two men.
