Benedict XVI leaves the
papacy much as he found it

Washington Post, by Editorial Board

IN EIGHT years as pope, Benedict XVI’s boldest act may have been his last one. (Snip) Pope Benedict’s response to the greatest challenge he faced — the explosion of sexual-abuse scandals in Catholic dioceses around the world — was inadequate. During his visit to the United States in 2008, he met with victims of predatory priests; he later apologized for the crimes and oversaw modest Vatican measures to extend the statute of limitation for cases and prevent further abuse. But the pope never acted against bishops who covered up crimes, and he never admitted or apologized for his own failures

A very wise move to step down. In the future, precedent has now been established. The Church cannot afford to have a 100 yo Pope with Alziehmers or dementia. Sign of the times.
Circumstances change.

ya know what..the church has done a lot of good deeds...why does the MSM just focus on the sexual abuse...which by the way...happens in our schools everyday...some by teachers....other abuse by fellow students that the teachers seem to ignore it happening.,..

“I would say that this problem of AIDS cannot be overcome with advertising slogans. If the soul is lacking, if Africans do not help one another, the scourge cannot be resolved by distributing condoms; quite the contrary, we risk worsening the problem. The solution can only come through a twofold commitment: firstly, the humanization of sexuality, in other words a spiritual and human renewal bringing a new way of behaving towards one another; and secondly, true friendship, above all with those who are suffering, a readiness - even through personal sacrifice - to be present with those who suffer. And these are the factors that help and bring visible progress.

“Therefore, I would say that our double effort is to renew the human person internally, to give spiritual and human strength to a way of behaving that is just towards our own body and the other person’s body; and this capacity of suffering with those who suffer, to remain present in trying situations.

“I believe that this is the first response [to AIDS] and that this is what the Church does, and thus, she offers a great and important contribution. And we are grateful to those that do this.” - Pope Benedict

Sorry for the long quote - it is to counter the three word quote/distortion within their ridiculous editorial.

Serious questions - will the outgoing pope be allowed to vote for the new pope? And when this pope dies, will there be a big funeral?

Almost all of the priest sex abuse is homosexual oriented. The regular and moral majority among priests is doing much better than any other professional group. The WASHINGTON POST, words that are often censored themselves, continues its campaign of denigration and character assassination while approving of perverted sexual practices among (for example) politicians.

#5 Pope Benedict will remain a cardinal upon resigning the papacy, but he is over 80 years of age and therefore is ineligible to vote.

He should have brought out the fact that most of the children molested were male children, molested by male adults, homosexuals. I guess it´s fine to be gay as long as you aren´t a priest.

I like to propose a new amendment to the Contitution:

Separation of Church and Media.

They haven´t a clue about the status of the pope.

The only spiteful comments on B16 I have seen today are from the same people who want the Boy Scouts to welcome gay scout leaders. Irony much?

I have to say after reading the editorial and the comments afterwards, that anti-Catholicism and anti-religion is alive and well among the "progressive" community. So much for their posture of tolerance!

Not being a Catholic but having boundless respect for the Papacy and all Popes, I think Benedict may be setting a good example by allowing another to serve if he thinks he cannot fill the office sufficiently. (Would that secular leaders be similarly responsible to the office they hold and the people they serve).

I know this must have been an extremely difficult decision for him, and that God surely helped him make it.

Reply 14 - Posted by: butch, 2/11/2013 6:55:43 PM     (No. 9170981)

"He rejected calls by Catholic progressives for reconsideration of doctrines such as celibacy and the ban on women in the priesthood;"

Well.

Priestly celibacy is a matter of church discipline and can be reconsidered. In fact, there are married men who enter the priesthood in Eastern Rite Catholic churches, and there are married priests who have been allowed to convert to the Catholic faith.

But women as priests?!? Is the Washington Post aware that Holy Orders are a sacrament that cannot be changed by any pope, ever? Sheesh, I´m not even a Catholic and I know that. Could it possibly be that there is a dearth of properly catechized, practicing Catholics among the ranks of editorial writers at the Washington Post?

Reply 15 - Posted by: mickeymat, 2/11/2013 6:55:56 PM     (No. 9170982)

Agree the Post has no credibility to justify commentary about the Pope´s shortcomings. However I also agree with their criticisms of him. Pope Benedict did NOTHING to punish the perpetrators of the sexual abuse scandal-said he did not have the authority to overrule Bishops. That said, exactly what are the responsibilities and powers of being the Pope? I just don´t get it. I was a teacher in a Catholic school and also an administrator of CCD classes. I saw everything first hand. The Church punished the brave few who spoke up and rewarded the perpetrators and kept them in power. There were absolutely NO repercussions at all either then or in to the future.

You can be Progressive or you can be the Shepherd of the faith. I see extremely little overlap.

I was raised Roman, but am now ACC (we are the Anglicans who left the Episcopal church because the ECUSA began ordaining women as priests back in the 70s and practice the 1928 BCP) - I would hope that the next Pope does as the current one has done and reject any prods to ordain women as well. It will fly in the very face of all the history of the Catholic church - it abrogates the very Apostolic Succession, the ´great commission´ if you will, that Christ Himself gave to the twelve, NONE of whom were women. Women have their role in the Church...and indeed, they have been among the strongest drivers and and adherents of the Church, but making them priests will not "correct a wrong." It will only slap God in the face and make the universal church of Christians a organ of humanity, not God. The Apostolic Succession was laid out as a principle of Christian sovereignty in the Nicene Creed. To get rid of that is to unravel the church, which is the REAL purpose of these progressives. Who will you follow, God, or Man?

Im sorry I just realized my lack of edit made it sound as if the 1928 BCP was a BAD thing...It isnt...the ACC practices the 1928 BCP, rejecting later versions as being far too liberal and lenient with the Holy Gospel.

I guess the problem with the pedophile priests is that they didn´t join NAMBLA. Then everything would be OK

I´m surprised that so many are so ignorant of the role of the Pope.

Think back to the dark days of 2009, when school districts in California and across the nation faced dire budget shortfalls. States would have done almost anything for extra money, and when the Obama administration dangled Race to the Top grants in front of them, many of them did indeed race to adopt the policies that would win federal approval — such as including student test scores in teachers´ performance rankings and adopting common curriculum standards. Because public education falls almost entirely under state authority, this sort of arm-twisting was the only way the administration could persuade states

Michael Kim momentarily was on top of the US Open leaderboard Saturday and it was quite wonderful, wouldn´t you say? The California Bear junior golfer is not just this year´s token low amateur, for a while he was legitimately contending for his nation´s Open Championship. Kim went out on Saturday and shot a 1-over 71. Four birdies in six holes on the back nine got him to even on the week, just one shot back of the lead, but he had two bogeys and a double bogey in his last three holes(Snip)Kim´ qualifying story is quite the tale, too.

It was ugly, that much is for sure. Tiger Woods got off to a resounding start with a birdie on the first hole on Saturday but the wheels came off after that and came off in a hurry. Woods went on to bogey seven of the next 17 holes and stumble to a 6-over 76,(Snip) The big issue for Woods of late has been his play on the weekends at majors. As Ron Sirak of Golf World pointed out, since losing to Y.E. Yang at the 2009 PGA Championship, Woods has only broken 70 three times in 23 weekend rounds

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A high school football player convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl was given the state´s second-toughest sex offender classification at a Friday hearing. The decision by Judge Thomas Lipps at Jefferson County Juvenile Court in Steubenville means Trent Mays could have to report to a local sheriff every six months for 10 years. Unlike adult sex offenders, however, Mays´ name won´t be included on publicly accessible websites. And he can request to have the sex offender classification removed later based on his history of rehabilitation.

Mickey Kaus hears from a reliable source that Democrats are choosing a curious hill to die on to defend the current language in the Gang of Eight’s immigration bill. I’m told(Snip)that a good deal of the Democratic opposition to John Cornyn’s proposed amendment to the Gang of 8 bill has nothing to do with border security. It has to do with DUIs. Specifically, Cornyn’s amendment would bar illegal immigrants with misdemeanor DUI convictions from ”probationary” legal status, which is the immediate legalization offered by Marco Rubio, et al, to most of the 11 million undocumented immigrants

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Turkey´s four biggest cities on Sunday and clashed with riot police firing tear gas in the third day of the fiercest anti-government protests in years. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan blamed the main secular opposition party for inciting the crowds, whom he called "a few looters", and said the protests were aimed at depriving his ruling AK Party of votes as elections begin next year. The unrest erupted on Friday when trees were torn down at a park in Istanbul´s main Taksim Square under government plans to redevelop the area,

DUBLIN, Ohio - Tiger Woods made the wrong kind of history Saturday in the Memorial. Woods posted his highest nine-hole score as a professional when he had an 8-over 44 on the back nine at Muirfield Village. Players started the third round on both tees because of rain delays. Woods made one double bogey from an awkward lie in the bunker. He chopped out of the rough on his way to a double bogey on the par-5 15th. And he couldn´t navigate the slope in front of the 18th green when he made a triple bogey.

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is. Is he the dyed-in-the-wool liberal that his biggest supporters and critics suggest? Or is he a pragmatic, even cynical, politician who cares more for his popularity than taking risks for his ideological goals or living up to his rhetoric? Even in the short period since his reelection, Obama has provided evidence to support conflicting interpretations. His efforts to pass immigration reform, the unsuccessful push for stricter gun controls and tax hikes on high earners buttress the case for Obama-as-ideologue.

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.
