Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said Monday that he opposes an assault weapons ban. Speaking on MSNBC Manchin, who has an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association and in December called for federal action to reduce gun violence, said he thinks there´s a better way to reduce mass shootings without introducing new restrictions for gun owners. "I do not support an assault weapon ban because the definition of assault weapon is still hard to come by," Manchin said. "So I am not going to comment on people´s legislation. I do not support that approach right now."

We are being set up for a "reasonable" compromise. This statement by manchin tells me that, for now, democrats must be willing to settle for universal background checks, which can quickly morph into universal registration. Little by little the progressives move closer to the finish lIne.

In other words, Joe has been allowed to oppose this bill by Dear Leader(US) and Dingy Harry for political purposes.
If they need his vote badly, Joe will be called in and will do his DemoncRAT duty.

#3 there is no way WV will ever vote Manchin out of office. It´s like saying that if Robert Byrd doesn´t bring back the coal industry he´s toast. Manchin has a job of life no matter how he votes. And he will vote the way obama tells him to.

#5 is, unfortunately, correct. Manchin is some sort of celebrity in West Virginia. He trashed WVU by selecting a thirty something punk lawyer as head of WVU, and the punk lawyer manufactured an executive MBA for Manchin´s daughter.
In the end, several WVU administrators were forced out, but not before ruining the academic reputation of a nice school.
And Manchin, then governor of WV, had no comments to make at any time during the WVU mess. But at least they did revoke his daughter´s executive MBA.

I have written to him several times on this issue, and got a snail mail reply to each e-mail. It spent a page and a half saying absolutely nothing and taking no stand one way or the other.
From Rockefeller I have heard crickets.
