Since about the third time I heard of these buys, it occurred to me that they were restricting the supply.

Gun forums noticed this weeks ago. I thought about the gun control possibility back then, but .40 and 9mm are handgun rounds. If non-DOD departments were buying .223 (the "evil assault weapon" ammo), then we should really worry. Although I suppose it could be a ploy to shift production away from .223. Or, they know the government is about to go after ammo makers in some way.

Like anything big government does, the inventory will shrink over time and guarantee the ´misplaced´ ammo won´t go to the good guys.

My sons and I both noticed this several days ago. We are having a heck of a time getting ammo for our 9mm´s and .40 cals. Both calibers are what the gov is buying up, and they are the 2 most popular handgun calibers. IT IS gun control, you know it, I know it.

Probably trying to dry up the supply until they get all those strict laws passed- then it won´t matter. Who is going to buy a gun if they can´t get ammo? Also, the ammo won´t be there when the government makes it´s move after the collapse.

Let´s use logic. Confiscate millions of weapons or regulate and control ammo purchases? The answer is obvious. The feds can do the latter with a stroke of the pen. The upside (for them) are no 2nd Amendment entanglements.

It´s not like the repubs are shutting down their funding.

Ummmm... how foes DHS have the funds in their budget to do this? The House needs to investigate this ptonto for many reasons. Calling my guy tomorrow. DHS doesn´t need and can´t afford this ammunition. Enough.

The Senate should investigate this is well, but if there´s a more useless layabout won´t -even -write -a -budget pointless ridiculous legislative body on the planet I´d like to know where.

I think this would be pointless as a way to keep ammo out of our hands. The ammo guys are still going to make it and I don´t think the government could buy 5 billion rounds per year, after year...

Ammo is very hard to find in stores right now, but a little computer time and you will find it online (buklammo.com etc...) I´ve bought some 40SW in the last week from two of them, with shipping came to about $0.45 per round. That is about .10 more per round than a year ago. I now don´t have to worry about going to the range twice a month for the next year and putting a dent in my ´stock´.

I contacted my Congressman Ralph Hall and Senator John Cornyn (Texas) with the 1.6 BILLION round purchase...their answer´s so far is that the figures are "exaggerated"...so I asked if that is so then what are the right figures..."less than 300,000" is what I´m being told... now, has my Government lied to me before??? Now where do you suppose the bullets have gone to???

The DHS is not a friend or protector of American citizens. Quite the opposite. It has been greatly subverted from it´s original mission to guard the nation from Islamic attacks. Now it appears to be being honed into a paramilitary force. Prepared to be used against any group or anyone who rebels against the current administration´s agenda. It is still in it´s early stages of formation and can be stopped. Let´s pray that it is.

Ammo makers just need to tell DHS that purchases over a fixed amount per year will not be allowed!

With the rash of .40 and 9mm orders by the government, the manufacturers may understandably be unwilling to invest in physical plant and new employees to open new production lines. Government purchases of this magnitude are an anomaly and not indicative of the market, thus not sustainable over time from a manufacturing perspecitve. Some manufacturers also appear to be producing less .380, .38 special, .45 auto, and .357 rounds at the same time the citizenry´s demand across the board for any caliber of ammo has skyrocketed. Government intervention has tightened the supply such that the majority of ammo available for purchase has gone up in price, often in orders of magnitude with the net effect of "taxing" those who can still find readily available supplies. OMB has rules regarding this type of government acquisition relative to its market impact. A heavy political hand is behind this procurement ploy that reeks of abuse of the public treasury for surreptitious policy making purposes.

I wonder if someone made/sold a weapon based on laser technology if the government could prevent its distribution. It would be very difficult to limit the supply of photons. Its just a thought, but I am getting the sense we need to outsmart them.

Restrict supply only? Then why all those FEMA camps? Why are the military practicing maneuvers in cities? Why is military equipment being embedded in state and local police departments?

I know this sounds crazy right now but keep an eye out for Obama dismissing troops that aren´t willing to fire on American citizens.The person who leaked this info is a well respected world humanitarian and not the left wing phony variety.

I don´t know wy the ammo makers are giving government orders a priority or at least rationing what they can produce so everybody gets a "fir shot" at renewing their supply.

FEMA is part of homeland security. They didn´t have the funds to respond to Sandy but they have plenty of money to buy ammo to use on their own citizens?
We have the military to protect us from foreign invaders so why does HS need millions of bullets?

As far as I can tell, they are looking for 240,000 rounds of pistol ammo - not 21 million.

Thanks for the link, #18. It´s a request for vendors to quote on a commercial (readily available, not needing any R&D) item using simplified procedures. It´s a 100% set-aside for small businesses, which means the expected price is between $3K and $100K (or maybe $250K). A small business typically has less than 500 employees and $5 million in revenue (meaning companies like Winchester and Remington probably aren´t elegible). The quantity is for 100,000 rounds of .40 JHP, 100,000 rounds of 9mm JHP, and 40,000 rounds of 9mm ball. All of this isn´t being purchased at once; the government intends to issue periodic purchase orders for smaller increments until the 100K or 40K base is exhausted. The "MX" units means 1000, so if the QTY is 100, that´s 100,000. So, 240K is the correct total. Somebody probably multiplied the QTY in column 22 by the schedule in column 20, but that´s wrong. Of course, there could be other RFQs out there.
