China air pollution "beyond index"

BEIJING — In the first two months of 2013 Beijing´s air pollution has kept schoolchildren indoors and sent coughing residents to hospitals, but this time something is different about the murky haze: the government´s transparency in talking about it. Even state-run media gave the smog remarkably critical and prominent play. "More suffocating than the haze is the weakness in response," read the headline of a front-page commentary by the Communist Party-run China Youth Daily.(Snip)Air pollution is a major problem in China due to the country´s rapid pace of industrialization, reliance on coal power, explosive growth in vehicle ownership

What can the average citizen do besides complain a little? It´s not like they can elect a different set of rulers to improve the quality of life.

This is actually pretty easy to fix. Step 1 - sell off the power stations, the auto plants and most of the rest of the means of production. Step 2 - mandate they not pollute. Problem solved.

Anybody got the message yet why the Chinese are buying property here?

My pro-active foreign policy involves using the EPA to identify polluters in China.

Our notifications to plants, factories, etc would allow time for closures and refitting.

Then, after a certain time, if the Chinese offenders have not complied with our edicts...

Smart technology can eliminate the threat to world peace and harmony posed by the
offending Chinese locations.
Works for me.
Making good use of the EPA to enhance America and the world...
Ending Chi-Com pollution and its threat to mankind.

The coal burned in Beijing is typically from deposits far to the north of the city and is very soft coal--which means it is high in sulfur content and almost more dirt than carbon. While outside, most Beijing residents wear surgical masks which are somewhat effective against particulates but do nothing to exclude gaseous pollutants such as sulfur and nitrogen compounds. In addition to the industrial uses, which probably contribute most of the pollution, coal is used for cooking year round and wintertime domestic and commercial heating. If you can, avoid Beijing in the winter.

#6: IIRC, a mineral can be classed as coal if it has 50% carbon content. The accompanying material was addressing another subject, and didn´t discuss the issue re pollution further. But that would seem to guarantee quite a lot of ash [and gas] of unknown chemical composition, and the airborne particulates as of course tiny ash specks. As to the "surgical masks," I think any figures on even interception of minute particulates would be discouraging. A "feel-good" gesture, I suspect.

Abandoning State Tax System

California should abandon its current tax system and charge everyone the same rate. That’s the proposal made by famed economist Arthur Laffer in a report released Thursday that is highly critical of California’s business climate. Laffer,(Snip) said in an interview that moving to a flat tax rate of about 6.5 percent would reduce complexity over the tax system and free up money for businesses to invest. He also said the rate would be revenue-neutral at full employment, meaning the state would collect the same revenue as it does under the current system. Otherwise, under our current progressive system

A Central Florida man who was shot and killed by an FBI agent early Wednesday morning was being investigated by the FBI and Massachusetts authorities in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings. The FBI told the Orlando Sentinel that during the early morning hours Wednesday, an FBI agent — along with two Massachusetts State Police troopers and other law enforcement personnel — were interviewing 27-year-old Ibragim Todashev in connection with the Boston Marathon bombing investigation when a violent confrontation was initiated by Todashev.

Joe Biden spoke last night in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month. Biden has long, deep ties to the Jewish community — Obama actually picked him in 2008 in part to reassure skittish Jewish Democrats. Biden indeed offered fulsome, heartfelt praise in his remarks, before wandering into highly uncomfortable terrain and delivering a speech that is likely to be quoted by anti-Semites for years and decades to come. (It’s already the subject of excited discussion among the white supremacist community.)

Grief and politics don´t mix. When raw, aching grief and the dirtiest kind of politics meet, a hot volcano of pain and outrage erupts that is unstoppable. But it is necessary.(Snip)before Benghazi, there was Extortion 17, the call sign of a special operations mission in Afghanistan on Aug. 6, 2011. Three months after the strike on Osama bin Laden, 30 Americans -- including 15 from the bin Laden strike-team unit, Navy SEAL Team 6, and two other SEALs -- were killed in the costliest single-day loss for the U.S. military in the Afghanistan war, and the largest SEAL loss

A faulty steering apparatus may bring an early end to NASA’s Kepler space telescope, a $600 million tool in the space agency’s quest for life elsewhere in the universe. Kepler is the first NASA mission capable of finding Earth-size planets in or near the habitable zone, the range of distance from a star where the surface temperature of an orbiting planet might be suitable for liquid water. Launched in 2009, it has discovered thousands of such planets, including a pair just 1,200 light years away.(Snip) But yesterday, Kepler’s mission ran into trouble.

The IRS´s Nonprofit Helper

The Internal Revenue Service last year supplied a left-leaning nonprofit charity with confidential information about conservative organizations, which the charity disseminated to the public, ProPublica reported yesterday. The charity in question was ProPublica itself. We should acknowledge that "left-leaning" is our characterization; ProPublica describes itself in its own tax filings as "entirely non-partisan and non-ideological." ProPublica is legally obliged to be nonpartisan, for it enjoys tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, which means that contributions to it are tax-deductible.

A Tainted Campaign?

If it is proven that the IRS thwarted some groups from obtaining tax-exempt status in fear that their traditional or conservative messages might hurt the 2012 Obama campaign (especially if it did so under pressure from White House-affiliated operatives), and if it is proven that the Obama administration deliberately ignored warnings about lax security at the Benghazi consulate, missed real opportunities to send help, or deliberately massaged intelligence reports in order to mislead the pre-election public about the true nature of Benghazi in order to further a false campaign narrative of a near dormant al-Qaeda

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
