| Mafia gangs in Italy and Poland are being blamed for the horsemeat scandal amid fears that more cases of contamination could be revealed in Britain within days. Experts in the horse slaughter industry believe the meat is ending up in lasagnes, burgers and other products being served at dinner tables across Britain as part of multimillion pound scams. It has been claimed that the criminals use intimidation to get vets and other food production officials to approve the horsemeat and other cheaper alternatives, such as pork, as beef, which are then shipped around the world.

"Shipped around the world."
I couldn´t read the whole article. The cruelty involved is appalling--and to think that I could have been eating meat from these poor animals is nauseating. No more frozen pot pies for me!
Read the whole thing before you comment.

I love all animals, specially horses and kitties and this was so sick and cruel, I would like to see these butchers put to hard labor in a prison in Siberia with no coats and no fire.

Pork also in the beef "shipped around the world."
Seems to me, so Muslims need to be calling in a fatwah on these guys -- but it will probably be McDonald´s, instead.

I won´t eat horse meat, but it was common in times past. It was fed to our soldiers in WW II. I remember it being available in grocery stores in the´50s.

Before we´re too quick to judge, horses in the USA are sent to Mexico, for cruel slaughter because people here can´t stomach the thought of them being slaughtered (humanely and under FDA control) in the US. The meat is then sent to Canada and worldwide. What frosts governments is that unregulated suppliers are taking profits from the beef suppliers, which in turn isn´t being taxed. The meat misrepresentation in products is a distant, secondary consideration.

I like the solution proposed by #1.
I thought about this article while I was at Publix today, looking down the aisle with all the pet food that contains "meat by-products." You may not care about the ethics of horse meat or the means of slaughtering--but what if it´s from race horses and tainted with a dangerous drug, as the article describes in some cases? Not good for you or your pets.
We haven´t given the cats mystery meat (at least, not to our knowledge) for years and now we start with ourselves. It´s enough to make us go back to a vegetarian menu--or heavily so, at least. And I may end up making my own cat food after this, not forgetting the taurine cats desperately need.

At least now we know what Italian Mafia guys do with the rest of the horse, after they leave the head in someone´s bed.

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama says he is instructing his disaster response team to get tornado victims in Oklahoma everything they need "right away." Obama calls the devastation that tore through the Oklahoma City suburbs, quote, "one of the most destructive tornados in history," even though he said the extent of the damage is still unknown. Obama spoke Tuesday after an Oval Office briefing on the latest developments from his disaster response team and as Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Craig Fugate was heading to Oklahoma. Obama has declared a major disaster in Oklahoma, ordering federal aid to supplement state

Dan Pfeiffer’s job title is “senior advisor to the president for strategy and communications.” And on five television shows Sunday, he all too clearly communicated the White House’s strategy of remaining unclear on pertinent details about scandals now dogging President Barack Obama. “Fox News” host Chris Wallace pressed Mr. Pfeiffer on “one lingering question” about last Sept. 11’s terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya: “What did the president do that night?” After Mr. Pfeiffer tried a few end runs, Mr. Wallace asked: “Was he in the Situation Room?”

Latest - 10.33 (04.33) This from the New York Times: When the tornado sirens went off around 2.15pm, the staff of the AgapeLand Learning Centre, a day care facility, moved 15 children into two bathrooms, draping them with a protective covering and singing songs with them to keep them calm. As the wind ripped off the roof of one of the bathrooms, they all sang "You Are My Sunshine" to remain calm. None of the children were harmed. 10.25 (04.25) KFOR news has provided us with a map of the paths of the various tornadoes to hit Moore

A number of heartless looters have emerged amid the tragedy of the deadly Oklahoma tornado, storming a storm-damaged hospital facility and helping themselves to various items, a report claims. Reports of looting came in as Moore, one of the hardest-hit towns in the storm, deals with the loss of more than 51 people who have been confirmed dead, and another 120 injured. The vandals were spotted at the Moore Medical Center, a small facility that sustained damage in the twister. It was a location that was hit hard by the twister, and where rescuers sprung into action to get 15

The floor of the community centre in Springdale, Arkansas, shakes to a staccato rhythm as the young Latino dancers practise their steps. [Snip] It is about nourishing their Mexican roots, making sure their culture doesn´t shrivel and die in this corner of the Deep South. I have come to Springdale because it is a harbinger of America´s future. Ten years ago there were hardly any Latinos here--now they make up more than 30% of the population. Predictions suggest that by 2030, this is what the US will look like. Changing attitudes? Right now, one in four Americans under 18 is

The Hungarian prime minister has drawn outrage in Germany after drawing parallels with comments made by Angela Merkel about sending "cavalry" to Hungary and the Nazi occupation of his country. [Snip] When asked about the situation last week, Mrs Merkel, the German chancellor, said she "would do everything to put Hungary in the right direction, but we won´t be sending in the cavalry straight away." Viktor Orban however brought up the Second World War. "The Germans have already sent cavalry to Hungary: they came in form of tanks," said the prime minister in a radio interview on Friday. WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

So actually asked CNN´s Candy Crowley of her guest Sen. A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement

WASHINGTON – White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer said Sunday Republicans owe Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, an apology for alleging she played a part in formulating the White House’s response to the attacks in Benghazi, Libya, last year that killed four Americans. Pfeiffer said on ABC’s “This Week” that the release of more than 100 pages of Benghazi emails and notes show “beyond a shadow of the doubt” that accusations she tried to change the narrative of what happened in the attacks was false. "And, frankly, I think that many of the Republicans
