| The first rule about traveling between America and England aboard the Queen Mary 2, the flagship of the Cunard Line and the world’s largest ocean liner, is to never refer to your adventure as a cruise. You are, it is understood, making a crossing. The second rule is to refrain, when speaking to those who travel frequently on Cunard’s ships, from calling them regulars. The term of art — it is best pronounced while approximating Maggie Smith’s cut-glass accent on “Downton Abbey” — is Cunardists. The third rule, unspoken, is to not fling your Champagne flutes

Interesting article. The first I´ve ever read in the New York Times.
I wonder what their little pets, the Occupiers, think of all the bourgeois excess of this article?
Also: Titanic. Works on many levels. Especially where the NYT is involved.

We did January crossing on QE2 in ´06. We discovered, as is oft said, there is nothing to do, and not enough time to do it. I highly recommend the experience aboard an ocean liner, not a two-week cruise barge repositioning. Trust me, it´s not the same.
BTW: Westbound you gain an hour each evening.

Just recently said to husband that I had zero desire to go on a Cruise but would love to cross the Atlantic on an ocean liner. Enjoyed the article.

Loved this article and thanks to the great poster. However, I would not get on a ship going anywhere. I hate large quantities of water and just KNOW that I will drown instantly.

I did a crossing in 1952 on a Navy transport as a child--wonderful memories; three repositioning cruises on the NORWAY (formerly FRANCE) in the past 15 years and loved it. It´s a little different than my two years on the FORRESTAL (an aircraft carrier). I love being at sea in reasonable comfort which includes warships.

The deadly twister that raked through Oklahoma did an estimated $2 billion in damage, which puts it on track to be the most expensive tornado in U.S. history. That’s the preliminary damage estimate the Oklahoma Insurance Department released Wednesday, two days after a monster twister flattened the city of Moore and killed 24 people, including nine children. The figure was double an earlier estimate. Insurance Department spokeswoman Calley Herth said the monetary damage caused by Monday’s tornado could be greater than the $2 billion in damage from the 2011 tornado that struck Joplin, Mo.

The union representing U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials will officially oppose the proposed Senate immigration reform legislation on Monday, according to an advance statement obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. The National Citizenship and Immigration Services Council (USCIS Council) says the legislation fails to address its top concerns about the current system, including the pressure on USCIS officers to approve visa applications without thorough review and the bureaucratic barricades that prevent them from coordinating with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials. Sources say it is highly unusual for the USCIS Council to weigh in publicly on legislation.

WASHINGTON — I WENT to New York last week to cover the TV presentations for the new season, shows like “Scandal,” “Shark Tank” and a faltering “American Idol.” I may as well have stayed here. You know that the faltering American idol in the White House must be reeling in this scandalous spring. No Drama Obama is immersed in drama so over the top it could have been scripted by Shonda Rhimes and Karl Rove. Just four months after his second inauguration, the president is buffeted by gushing investigations, smug and deranged Republicans, and cat-who-ate-the-canary conspiracists.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election.
