| Both captain and first officer had to don special oxygen masks to breathe, allowing them to make the emergency landing en route to Philadelphia from Heathrow last Sunday. They told passengers merely there had been a “technical fault” with the Boeing 777 but gave no other reason for the “pan pan” distress call. They landed in temperatures of -30C at Goose Bay in Newfoundland, the nearest airstrip to the coast and where passengers had to wait 10 hours on board for a replacement plane to arrive. Why does the cabin air have to go through the engines ?
I realize we can´t just open a window but picking up toxic gasses from hot engine oil would seem like a good enough reason to find another source of ´fresh´ air.

The 787 does exactly that - the hot or cold air does not come from the engines. It´s electrically heated.
And in other aircraft, the hot air from the engines is mixed with other air from outside.
My question is - is this only happening on British aircraft?

I plead an overdose of open windows, first reading the Mail version then going to the source and not shutting the Mail window.
On February 1 the pilot of an Alaska Airlines plane passed out and his co-pilot had to land. It wasn´t a British plane but it WAS a Boeing.

As a B-757/767 Captain for many years, I take umbrage to the headline as "TERROR".
Pilots are trained to wear oxygen masks during some emergencies, and while the experience has some degree of "pucker factor," I seriously doubt that the pilots felt any "terror."
Even the UK likes to find headlines that sell papers....
I had to shut down one of 2 engines (B-757) over the Grand Canyon on one flight (oil leak), yet never experienced any "terror." Training kicked in and we made an uneventful landing in Las Vegas....

I flew 4 different kinds of Boeing products in 40 years of flying. They build great airplanes. The first airline jets (707´s) used turbo compressors to provide air to pressurize the cabin. The KC-135 Air Force similar aircraft used an air cycle machine that was an expansion turbine for pressurized air and heating and cooling. The 727´s then used air cycle machines for the same purpose. The point is you need to provide pressurized air to the cabin to fly at higher altitudes. Bleed air from the engines is used to drive some device to pressurize the cabin. I do feel that a system between the bleed air off the engines is a better and safer system. Ultimately you do need a source from the engines to provide creature comforts. I suppose you could fit the passengers with oxygen masks and heated suits. You can always rely on the press to provide half the facts and then get it wrong.

They found a 10 percent extra risk linked to taking simvastatin--the most commonly prescribed anti-cholesterol drug--which rose to 22 percent for those taking atorvastatin. Previous research into a suspected link with statins found a 9 percent rise in the chance of patients developing diabetes, but the new study looked at specific brands of drug.
