| On the same day that I offered to the S.C. Senate a resolution that would formally ask our congressional delegation to take action to mitigate Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s lifting of a 1994 ban on women in combat roles, this paper chose to offer an editorial in support of Secretary Panetta’s action. Certainly that is the privilege of the press in a land that still values the First Amendment to the Constitution. Interestingly enough, in making the case for this monumental change, the following sentenced was used: “Other nations have long demonstrated that women were suitable for combat.”
|
Comments: This is probably what liberals want, since it will make the low-info public reluctant to use military services to protect the country.

The number of intentional double standards associated with this madness is only beginning.
One can only imagine the effect on morale, mission planning and personnel when GI Jane has to duck out of a forward area because she´s fallen pregnant. The father, left behind, will be equally useless as he frets.

I would hope the two "O" girls are among those drafted ... in honor of their father.

Any woman aboard a Navy ship - especially but not limited to actual warships - is already in a combat assignment. The women on those deadly supply convoys in Iraq and Afghanistan were essentially in combat. The latest policy - allowing involvement with infantry units and lugging around upwards of 100 pounds of gear - that would be voluntary - and unpopular to the point of almost zero female participation.
My point is that there is less to the new policy than meets the eye - and that females are already in harm´s way - and more importantly in the way of the more effective male warriors when the Shi´ite really hits the fan.

Interesting that as soon as the Brazilian became the rage among young women, Obama allowed them to become Amazons.
Like most of Obama´s policies, this was done without public debate. And, as with all of Obama´s delusional policies, this will not go well.

#4 is correct. This is much ado about little and has everything to do with promotions for women. It has long been believed that members of the combat arms (infantry, armor, etc) have a clearer path to make general officer than those in combat support jobs. Remember the fuss about women getting CIBs? It was about promotions, not whether women could shoot or wanted to serve in the infantry.
I´m sure Obama thought that by changing this policy, he could once again show that he cares more about women than the mean old republicans.
And when the inevitable unintended consequences crop up, well, he´ll just blame the GOP again...

Why hasn´t Gloria Steinhem spoken out in favor of drafting women? Surely she believes in equal treatment for women?

Since there is NO drafting at this time, why the concern. The armed forces are still voluntary.

Islamabad - Four US soldiers have been killed in an attack in Afghanistan hours after the US announced it will engage in its first formal direct talks with the Taliban after dropping its long-standing demand that the movement renounce ties with al-Qaeda in order for them to progress. A US official said insurgents attacked Bagram Air Base with "indirect fire", suggesting the soldiers were killed by mortars or rockets. There were very few details of the attack, which threatens to impact on the US´s first formal direct talks with the Taliban, due to start on Thursday. One key condition

Amazon and other e-commerce firms are cutting ties with all Minnesotans who earn money by posting links that send traffic to online merchants after lawmakers passed a tweak to state sales tax law. Minnesota E-Fairness legislation, signed by Gov. Mark Dayton on May 23 and going into effect July 1, classifies independent bloggers and online reviewers as a physical presence of a business in the state. This means online companies who pay these people to generate new sales must collect tax not just on those sales, but on all sales in the state. The tax on online

NEW YORK - You might think that moving to a state with no income tax would greatly simplify your tax life. Not so fast. If you´re not careful, it could greatly complicate things and cost you tons in back taxes and penalties. For example, if you are still planning to spend significant time in your former state, you better limit it to less than 183 days. Why? Spending any more time there could mean you´ll be treated as a resident of that state and therefore have to pay tax. And it´s not just days spent in-state

NEW YORK -- At perhaps a bad time in U.S. employment, it seems there´s a "perception gap" between what workers think they´re worth on the job and how employers see them. Analysis by Bryant & Stratton College with help from Wakefield Research from a survey among U.S. adults age 18 to 34 found that 80% of workers believe they are "job ready and possess all the skills, experience and education needed to advance in their desired career path or obtain their next job." Yet 40% of U.S. employers say most entry-level job candidates lack even the basic skills needed

BERLIN/FRANKFURT - European car sales plunged last month to their lowest May level in two decades, eroding manufacturers´ hopes for a recovery this year after a rebound the month before. Figures on Tuesday from the Association of European Carmakers showed Germany, France and Italy, accounting for about half of the embattled region´s sales, suffered declines at or near double-digit percentage levels. Registrations across the 27-nation European Union dropped 5.9 percent to 1.04 million cars from 1.11 million a year ago, the lowest since May 1993 when sales fell below 1 million, the Association said.

Turkey warned on Monday it may bring in the army to help quell nearly three weeks of nationwide anti-government protests as two major union federations went on strike over police violence against demonstrators. The government raised the threat of putting soldiers on the streets after a weekend of violent clashes sparked by the eviction of campers occupying Istanbul´s Gezi Park, the epicentre of the protest movement. Police "will use all their powers" to end the unrest, deputy prime minister Bulent Arinc said in a televised interview. "If this is not enough, we can even utilise the Turkish armed forces

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

As NewsBusters reported last week, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin called out vulgarian comedian Bill Maher for referring to her Down Syndrome son Trig as "retarded." On ABC´s The View Monday, co-host Barbara Walters astonishingly defended Maher saying, "I don´t think he intended it to be mean-spirited" (video follows with transcript and commentary): WHOOPI GOLDBERG: At a recent standup show in Las Vegas, comedian Bill Maher apparently called Sarah Palin’s five-year-old developmentally-challenged son Trig retarded. And Sarah blasted him on Twitter as a bully. Is that, is it, is he a bully? Is he a bad, what is he?

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

Jeb Bush says he’s not worried that his work toward comprehensive immigration reform and his ties to the GOP establishment will alienate conservatives and negatively impact a potential 2016 presidential campaign, referring to critics as “the chirpers.” “If I decide to run for office again, it will be based on what I believe, and it will be based on my record,” the former Florida governor said in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody. “And that record was one of solving problems completely from a conservative prospective.” Bush (R) pointed to his conservative

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

Marco Rubio. Paul Ryan. The IRS. Illegal immigration. And fraud to the tune of billions.. Now there’s a combustible mix. Let’s start with the IRS, illegal immigration and fraud. We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.

It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.
