| He died on February 9, 2010. Fans and friends from around the world mourned the loss of their favorite TV sea captain — Captain Phil Harris. He wasn’t the kind of man Americans get to meet very often on TV. Not the kind of man TV writers know much about. They generally create soft, goofy men dominated by more capable and competent wives. But not even the best screenwriter’s imagination could have crafted a character like Captain Phil. Or the men who we’ve all gotten to know thanks to the first TV reality show ever to center around real-life

Last summer I took a picture of the Cornelia Marie when I was in Kodiak. The fishermen lead an interesting lifestyle.

We have watched this show since day 1 and the changes in the other captains since Phil´s illness and unexpected death has been remarkable. The saddest part of the whole Captain Phil story is the path of destruction that the youngest son has embarked on. He was swirling the drain before Phil passed and even the other Captains have all but given up trying to help him get out of the way of his date with disaster. The show only touched upon the other talents of these tough as nails men and many fans are aware from following the crew and Captains off the show that these tough talking men are supremely generous with their time and money. It is a great show.

There´s reality tv and there´s "The Deadliest Catch", on a level of its own. Everything about it is amazing -- the job, the men, the sea, the weather and the people who document the whole thing. I too have watched from day one, filled with complete respect.

I´m really out of touch. The only Phil Harris I know was a band leader who married Alice Faye and worked with Jack Benny.

When we went to Alaska last summer, the best thing we did was spend a few hours on a former crab boat featured on the show, the Aleutian Ballad. It was summer and it wasn´t the Bering Sea, but we got to see the crew pull crab pots and listened to their riveting stories. They made us laugh and cry. It was an amazing experience.

You´re definitely not alone, #9. I have not watched since Captain Phil passed. I can´t quite put my finger on the reason why, but the show is just not the same without him.

Last Thursday, Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) started a Twitter prairie fire with his call for people to describe #ObamacareInThreeWords. I first saw the headline early Tuesday on Real Clear Politics, a political news site where I generally start my morning. It´s not where I expect to see a story on breast cancer. Then I checked my e-mail messages -- they all seemed to be about Angelina Jolie´s op-ed. Students in my undergraduate class wanted to discuss it in our next session. Colleagues expressed concern and wondered what the right response was. People I don´t even know sent e-mails. Just when you think the news surrounding Obamagate cannot get any worse, it does. Some say U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s days on the job are numbered and that it’s just a matter of when he’ll be forced to resign. While I’ll not shed a tear over Holder’s departure, one of the replacement names being floated has me reaching for tissues: Gov. Deval Patrick. Patrick has denied he’s interested — but the job isn’t on offer yet. If it is, President Obama should not select him nor should he be confirmed by the Senate for a plethora of reasons.

WASHINGTON - There were new questions Saturday night concerning if anyone in the White House was aware of the IRS´ targeting of conservative groups. Inspector General Russell George said he informed a deputy at the Treasury Department in June of 2012 about the probe into the IRS. The Treasury Department confirmed the timeline but said they did not know the details of the investigation until last week.(Snip)Marcus Owens ran the tax-exempt division at the IRS for 10 years. He said it isn´t difficult to figure out who´s doing what at the agency.

It began in earnest last Friday. A flash mob of latte drinking, tofu eating media that has done its best to quell, rather than fan the flames of truth, turned on one of their own. Jay Carney lay bludgeoned at the base of the podium, a victim of friendly fire. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.
