| Colombia announced that it produced an average of 1.01 million barrels of oil per day in January, marking the first time that average crude output for a month surpassed the one million-barrel mark that the government had set as a target for the country´s oil industry. Last month´s figure was more than 7% higher than the 944,000 barrels a day produced in January 2012, the Mines and Energy Ministry said in a statement. For all of 2012, average oil output stood at 940,000 barrels of oil per day, which represents a 3.16% increase from 2011.

If it were not for the green lobby, that could have been the U.S. producing oil and creating jobs along with prosperity. Yet we give the Brazilians the funding and grants that should have been used by Americans, while we sit on our thumbs amid mass unemployment, malaise and a stillborn economy.

Not that that oil is helping us...Gasoline prices are soaring in SoCal blowing by the four dollar mark, and setting price records for a February. Thanks to the environmentally ill, I think we have a refining bottleneck with no new refineries built since the 70´s. Oil´s the lifeblood of our nation? Whatta gooberment!? Whatta country!?

For comparison, the Keystone Pipeline will carry, all by itself, 600 thousand barrels a day.

CARACAS, Venezuela Venezuela´s biggest food company on Monday hit back at President Nicolas Maduro´s claims that it´s to blame for the country´s persistent food shortages. The chief executive of Empresas Polar, Lorenzo Mendoza, rejected accusations by the president that the company has reduced production and is hoarding products to create scarcity. "The accusations that we are producing less than last year are false," Mendoza told reporters. "I presume that President Nicolas Maduro is not well informed about the situation and about what´s happening."

Venezuela in 2012 became a net importer of gasoline as a result of escalating problems at its refineries and increasing demand for fuel in its internal market, joining a growing list of countries that struggle with fuel supplies despite ample oil reserves. Venezuela exported 30,000 barrels per day (bpd) of gasoline and naphtha last year, according to state oil company PDVSA annual report. But it imported an average of 66,300bpd of the same fuels from the US alone, according to US energy department data.

The food prices in Latin America and the Caribbean rose 1.3% in March from the previous month, influenced by increases in Mexico, Venezuela, Chile, Peru and the Dominican Republic, FAO said on Tuesday. In a report, the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO) said that inflation was significantly higher than in February, when it hit 0.5%. According to Efe, the annual food inflation reached 10.4% in March, largely influenced by the evolution of inflation in Brazil (13.5%), Mexico (8.4 %) and Venezuela (30.3%).

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday. A healthcare provider has sued the Internal Revenue Service and 15 of its agents, charging they wrongfully seized 60 million medical records from 10 million Americans. The name of the provider is not yet known, United Press International said. But Courthouse News Service said the suit claims the agency violated the Fourth Amendment in 2011, when agents executed a search warrant for financial data on one employee – and that led to the seizure of information on 10 million, including state judges. The search warrant did not specify that the IRS could take medical information, UPI said.
