| Timothy Messer-Kruse doesn’t remember her name, but the question she asked in his college classroom a dozen years ago changed his career — and now it may revolutionize everything historians thought they knew about a hallowed event in the imagination of the American Left. “In my courses on labor history, I always devoted a full lecture to Haymarket,” says Messer-Kruse, referring to what happened in Chicago on the night of May 4, 1886. He would describe how a gathering of anarchists near Haymarket Square turned into a fatal bombing and riot. .

This guy will be lunching alone at work for a long time, after daring to spear one of the Left´s most sacred cows.

FTA: "In the United States, Haymarket ranks alongside the cases of Sacco and Vanzetti, Alger Hiss, and the Rosenbergs as a fable of anti-radical persecution."
We now know that Hiss and the Rosenbergs were indeed working for the Soviets, yet the left won´t give up on their lies about any of them.

FTA: " (Messer-Kruse) realized that earlier researchers had not consulted this (trial) transcript. Instead, they had relied on an abstract of the trial prepared by defense lawyers..."
A familiar methodology

Liberalism is a faux religion. It is complete with stories elevated to gospel, saints, sinners, martyrs and heretics. But because it is a relatively new religion, it cannot stand to have its dogma challenged. Its adherents are smug, stubborn, intolerant,self-righteous. It is why the press will not criticize the sitting pontiff. It is why the congregation of liberals ban dissent, circle the wagons of protection when their leader are challenged, and shun outsiders. We do not understand liberals because we assume that they are advancing misguided principles. They are not. They are proselytizing and defending their faith.
Old Screwtape would understand. He has created the perfect orthodoxy with which to fight the war against religion itself: If God truly loved man, he would have created a perfect world. That he did not proves he is unjust. Liberalism in all its forms will correct the injustice. In a perfect world, all pets will be treated equally, including the pets that walk on two legs. But like pets, we who will be equal will have lost our freedom.

The last paragraph is the best one. From now on, professors won´t be able to lecture about Haymarket without citing Messer-Kruse, who used the trial transcript to prove that the anarchists were exactly who they said there were--anarchists.

The appalling revelations about the abusive behavior of the IRS underscore the wisdom of our Founding Fathers, who recognized that human nature is unchanging and that government is inherently abusive. The dilemma they dealt with was how to make a government strong enough to maintain internal order and defend us from external enemies but not be able to oppress us. They came up with the federal system of checks and balances, with power divided among the federal government, the states and the localities.

We are in the midst of the worst Washington scandal since Watergate. The reputation of the Obama White House has, among conservatives, gone from sketchy to sinister, and, among liberals, from unsatisfying to dangerous. No one likes what they´re seeing. The Justice Department assault on the Associated Press and the ugly politicization of the Internal Revenue Service have left the administration´s credibility deeply, probably irretrievably damaged. They don´t look jerky now, they look dirty. The patina of high-mindedness the president enjoyed is gone. Something big has shifted.

Before Washington was rocked in recent days by an assortment of brewing scandals, immigration reform was at center stage. And immigration reform will surely return shortly to the heart of Washington debates as Congress considers legislation proposed by Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio and his bipartisan "Gang of 8" colleagues. Their bill would normalize the status of millions of illegal, mostly Hispanic immigrants. This has stimulated a vigorous debate among conservatives over the cost of reform, mostly in the form of public services for those with low skills and high needs.

There is a keen Kennedy-like vigor to Joe Biden that overwhelms any room. As was once said of Theodore Roosevelt, he, too, wants to be the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral. Unlike President Obama, who speaks in interviews with Hemingway-esque sparseness, Biden rambles like Thomas Wolfe, painting a robust picture of an ever-changing America where coal miners will soon be working in clean-tech jobs, gun-safety laws will be tougher and China will be reined in by the White House from poisoning the planet with megatons of choking pollutants.

Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, is facing fresh scrutiny over her political activities in the former East Germany, with a book alleging she took part in the Communist regime’s propaganda activities. Ms Merkel is the first chancellor to come from the German Democratic Republic. As a physicist in the 1980s she was a member of the communist youth organisation “Freie Deutsche Jugend” at the Academy of Sciences in Eastern Berlin and was in charge of “agitation and propaganda”, the journalists Ralf Georg Reuth and Günther Lachmann claim in their book The First Life of Angela M.

The controversy embroiling the IRS kicked up another storm of rhetoric Monday over enforcement of campaign finance laws. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell connected allegations that the IRS improperly targeted conservative groups for extra scrutiny to a Democratic-led effort to expand campaign finance disclosure requirements known as the DISCLOSE Act. McConnell told the National Review that the bill to require corporations, unions and super PACS to report large expenditures “should go nowhere.”

According to Politico, Anthony Weiner has hired one staffer in preparation for his run for mayor of New York City. Two sources said that they couldn’t tell Politico the staffer’s name or what position he/she will assume under the former Congressman. The revelation follows weeks of speculation that Weiner is seeking a redemptive run for the mayor’s office. Speculation has raged that he has been looking for potential aides and staffers. Although Weiner’s pollster, Joel Benenson, has been hired by New York City Council speaker Christine Quinn, Weiner’s ad man, Jim Margolis of GMMB,

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. She was determined to

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. What was a DHS agent doing at the San Jose Tea Party protest? (snip) they weren´t just spying on us in San Jose and monitoring us in San Francisco, they were watching us throughout the entire state

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Is the worm turning against Barack Obama? After four-plus years of being given the benefit of the doubt by the bulk of the US media, the President now suddenly feels more vulnerable. Today both the New York Times and the Washington Post have run prominent and angry editorials and columns slamming the administration for its attempt to criminalise a Fox News reporter James Rosen for working a State Department source to obtain a story. The "Rosen Affair"--as it is now known--is poisoning the well in Washington at an alarming rate for Mr Obama, with an indignant White House press corps
