U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney: ´Lincoln´
historically inaccurate
regarding Connecticut

HARTFORD — As Rep. Joe Courtney watched the Oscar-nominated "Lincoln" over the weekend, something didn´t seem right to him. He said Tuesday he was shocked that the film, about President Abraham Lincoln´s political struggle to abolish slavery, includes a scene in which two Connecticut congressmen vote against the 13th amendment to the Constitution, outlawing slavery. "´Wow. Connecticut voted against abolishing slavery?´" Courtney recalled hearing audience members ask. "I obviously had the same reaction. It was really bugging me."

This is one of my pet peeves when watching any historical drama. It´s one thing to be creative and take artistic license when depicting fiction; it´s quite another to mess with the cultural memory of future generations by making inaccurate films. Witness the number of people who have grown up completely unaware of the roots of the conflict in Vietnam and the conduct of the war. Playing fast and loose with the facts is just wrong and lazy, not to mention unnecessary.

This is not the only distortion in the film - it has sanitized Mr. Lincoln, cleansing him of his opinions and actions which would today be considered Racist - nor does it mention his attempts to colonize blacks to get them out of the U.S.A. - and so much more - this film makes history politically correct.

Lincoln and Abolitionist wanted all slaves freed and sent back to Africa. That is not PC.

#2, the movie is a short snapshot of Lincolns last few weeks as President, and centered on only the fight to ratify. It is true that Lincoln had many faults, as does every human but one.

But to insist that his one triumphal achievement, eradicating slavery, cannot be told without invoking all that could be considered bad about the man is just the kind of "History" we constantly accuse the left of teaching. The politically correct idea that all historic figures should be judged not based on their actions in context with the reality of their specific world but by the standards and normative notions of the present day. By through that twisted ideological lens none of our national heros would look very good.

Lincoln lived in the 19th century, had he behaved as we would force him to in 2011 he would not have been Lincoln.

Sorry, this was a MOVIE, not a documentary (the two, however, frequently share a penchant for inaccuracy). For instance, Lincoln didn´t bleed for every slave. He wanted to preserve the union. That was the reason for the war.

On a personal note, I found two hours of Daniel Day Lewis talking to be extremely boring. Plus, 90% of the movie was in 70% darkness. I gave this movie 4 out of 10. I could not see why everyone raved.

Kudos to Rep. Courtney.

Just because it is a MOVIE does not mean that the truth should be ignored or portrayed incorrectly. While I understand the need to eliminate some details in order to meet time constraints, there is no excuse for depicting the facts incorrectly. Most people get their knowledge of history from sources like this.

Hollywood has never been known to let facts get in their way of a big box office.

I sup[pose it is too late for anyone to read, but for what it is worth. There is a country in Africa called "Libria" wich was founded by freed American slaves who started settling there in 1820. If Lincoln wanted to help freed slaves who opted for going to a country that would be their, would that have been such a terrible thing?

The comparisons were inevitable: two guys who became a national punchline after being caught in sex scandals make a bid for a political comeback from disgrace. But once you get past the astonishment and the snickers, the differences are more significant than the similarities between Mark Sanford, the Republican former South Carolina governor elected in a landslide to his old House seat earlier this month, and Anthony Weiner, the Democratic ex-congressman who formally launched his bid for mayor of New York on Wednesday. It is true that both pose tests of the electorate’s capacity for forgiveness. But Sanford

The deadly twister that raked through Oklahoma did an estimated $2 billion in damage, which puts it on track to be the most expensive tornado in U.S. history. That’s the preliminary damage estimate the Oklahoma Insurance Department released Wednesday, two days after a monster twister flattened the city of Moore and killed 24 people, including nine children. The figure was double an earlier estimate. Insurance Department spokeswoman Calley Herth said the monetary damage caused by Monday’s tornado could be greater than the $2 billion in damage from the 2011 tornado that struck Joplin, Mo.

The union representing U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials will officially oppose the proposed Senate immigration reform legislation on Monday, according to an advance statement obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. The National Citizenship and Immigration Services Council (USCIS Council) says the legislation fails to address its top concerns about the current system, including the pressure on USCIS officers to approve visa applications without thorough review and the bureaucratic barricades that prevent them from coordinating with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials. Sources say it is highly unusual for the USCIS Council to weigh in publicly on legislation.

WASHINGTON — I WENT to New York last week to cover the TV presentations for the new season, shows like “Scandal,” “Shark Tank” and a faltering “American Idol.” I may as well have stayed here. You know that the faltering American idol in the White House must be reeling in this scandalous spring. No Drama Obama is immersed in drama so over the top it could have been scripted by Shonda Rhimes and Karl Rove. Just four months after his second inauguration, the president is buffeted by gushing investigations, smug and deranged Republicans, and cat-who-ate-the-canary conspiracists.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose

On Wednesday, Drummer Lee Rigby of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, a man who had served Queen and country honorably in the hell of Helmand Province in Afghanistan, emerged from his barracks on Wellington Street, named after the Duke thereof, in southeast London. Minutes later, he was hacked to death in broad daylight and in full view of onlookers by two men with machetes who crowed "Allahu Akbar!" as they dumped his carcass in the middle of the street like so much roadkill. As grotesque as this act of savagery was, the aftermath was even more unsettling

MARK LEVIN: So why didn´t Chairman Issa hold an investigative hearing a year ago? Why didn´t Chairman Camp, all Republicans, hold an investigative hearing a year ago, and all the other tripping over themselves right now? I´ll tell you why. Because the establishment Republicans, the RINO Republicans, despise the Tea Party. They despise the conservative movement. We exist to be managed, to be shuttled to the polling place, to vote for their candidates. The Karl Roves of the world, and all the rest of them. They fight us in the primaries, they fight us at the grassroots.

Fox News chief Roger Ailes has sent a memo to his subordinates at the leading cable news network. He sent this memo to his staff today in connection with the federal investigation into an alleged leak to Fox News reporter James Rosen, a story that the Washington Post’s Ann E. WASHINGTON —In a dramatic departure from existing White House procedures, President Obama requested today that his staff start cc’ing him on stuff. “Look, I know a lot of you think I’m really busy and you don’t want to bother me,” the President reportedly told his staff in an Oval Office meeting. “But cc me anyway. It’s good for me to keep up on what’s going on around here.” “It’s not good when I turn on the news and they’re talking about something at the White House and I’m like, whoa, when did that happen?”
