WASHINGTON- House Republicans cast doubt on a citizenship path for the United States´ 11 million undocumented immigrants, with some calling for legal residency and no more. "Are there options that we should consider between the extremes of mass deportation and a pathway to citizenship for those not lawfully present in the United States?" House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., asked during the first of several hearings on immigration reform. He asked the question of San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, a hearing witness. Castro, a rising Hispanic star in the Democratic Party, said he didn´t

My maternal and paternal grandparents never were able to earn citizenship because each of them spoke Polish, but never became fluent in English.
Is it too much to ask of these people to expect them to speak English before they are granted citizenship? And why are there ballots in many areas printed in multiple foreign languages??

The reason why the Democrats want just about all illegal aliens who are here now, or who would come here in the future to be granted US citizenship is because the Democrats consider them to be prospective Democrat voters as historically about 80% of such legalized aliens have always voted for the Democrats.

Legalization wise Republicans should only support a conditional immigration status for longtime illegal aliens who do not have criminal records. That status should allow them to stay here, be able to work, and to travel to and from the USA as long as they abide by the immigration laws. They should not be eligible to access government supported social welfare programs, or bring additional alien family members into the USA.

If they wish to move further along in the legal US immigration system towards permanent residence and US citizenship, all legalized aliens who have that conditional immigration status should first have to qualify for an immigrant visa, as all legal immigrants must do today, that´s only fair. Once they receive permanent residence (a green card) those aliens should be treated as all other permanent residents are treated, and be eligible to apply for naturalization after 5 years as all other permanent residents can do if they wish.

If the Republicans go along with any sort of Democrat path to citizenship amnesty, before the Republicans will know what hit them, the Democrats will have registered 10 million or so new voters even before they ever become actually eligible to vote.

No need for a mass deportation, you ridiculous moron. Enforce the laws, fine and imprison those who employ illegals, jobs dry up, they go HOME, you brainless twit!

Does ANYONE really believe it´s only 11 million - my guess would be double that at the least!

Reply 7 - Posted by: saguni, 2/6/2013 7:55:46 PM     (No. 9162611)

he didn´t see a pathway to citizenship as "an extreme option," pointing out Congress previously chose that option and argued it has worked.

Riiight...if by worked you mean "gave citizenship to millions of lawbreakers, many of whom were not eligible by the terms, then enticed many more millions to break our laws waiting for the next free-for-all"

"They want to be treated with respect, they want to be able to come out of the shadows..."

Respect is earned in this case, it is earned by compliance with all of our laws.

"Are there options that we should consider between the extremes of mass deportation and a pathway to citizenship..."

A simple solution would be to say (and enforce) one simple rule...if you go home (self-deport at your own pace) and start over before we prosecute you, you have a chance, if we catch you in our country without a visa, you will never be eligible for citizenship.

Hows about a "pathway" to legal status...residency and a green card that can never lead to citizenship, government benefits or voting rights because you didn´t comply with our laws?

Heck, legalize them all, BUT as a penalty for coming here by breaking the law, the penalty is no voting for 25 years.

#8: Even if it stopped the amnesty recipients from voting [huge "if"], it wouldn´t stop the Dems from counting their votes. 2 or 3 times, even.

As soon as you give them legal status, they are eligible for Obamacare.

Schools and police stations were burning in Stockholm as violent riots continued for a fifth consecutive night. Emergency services were called to 70 separate incidents, including two torched primary schools, burning shops and a destroyed library building also housing a local police unit. Despite police claiming that the situation is beginning to calm down, critics say the riots were unavoidable after years of widening social gaps in a country which has the highest proportion of foreign-born citizens in Scandinavia.

The Democratic National Committee is accusing the GOP of "making up so-called ´scandals´ out of thin air." In an email to supporters, DNC Spokesman Brad Woodhouse writes that Republicans´ accusations of scandal aren´t legitimate — a claim that´s sure to draw howls from the right."Getting in President Obama´s way has been the top priority for Republicans in Congress since day one. But now they´ve gone too far. They´ve been caught red-handed making up so-called ´scandals´ out of thin air to stir up false rumors of vast ´cover-ups´ happening in the White House," Woodhouse writes. Country singer Josh Gracin was in Washington on Thursday night to perform at the Ninth Annual Night of Heroes Gala, and as badly as he may have wanted to, he wasn’t allowed talk politics in an interview with The Hill.“I’m very political, almost to where I get in trouble with my record label not to post anything [on Facebook],” the former American Idol finalist said. Gracin’s handler quickly stepped in, nodding to the recording device in my hand and helpfully reminding him that he was on the record.

The Obama Administration fought to keep a search warrant for James Rosen’s private e-mail account secret, arguing to a federal judge that the government might need to monitor the account for a lengthy period of time. The new details are revealed in a court filing detailing a back and forth between the Justice Department and the federal judges who oversaw the request to search a Gmail account belonging to Rosen, a reporter for Fox News. A 2009 article Rosen had written about North Korea sparked an investigation; Ronald C. Machen, Jr., the U.S. Attorney who is prosecuting Stephen Jin-Woo Kim,

As Democrats and the media continue to hammer Virginia lieutenant governor hopeful E.W. Jackson for his past comments on social issues, the Christian minister says he is battling what he calls the “mainstream media’s caricature” of him. In an email sent to The Daily Caller this week, the running mate to Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli said “every one of those comments has a context and were spoken in my role as a minister, not as a candidate.” In particular, the black Republican took issue with the media’s outrage over his comments on abortion.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose
