| One Fairfield, Conn., couple is receiving an early Valentine´s Day gift: recognition as the “longest-married” couple in the United States. John and Ann Betar have been married since Nov. 25, 1932, and this year will mark their 81st wedding anniversary. The award does not mean the couple is the longest married in the country; it means they have been together longer than all others nominated in the past year. John is 101 years old, and Ann is 97. The couple have five children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Hearty congratulations to John and Ann and take a look at the little lesson they provide in the evolution in American demographics. John and Ann had five children; their children averaged almost three children each; and their children´s children averaged just above one child each.

I just hope the media leaves them to live in peace instead of schlepping them to every talk show on TV or constantly showing up to interview these old people.

The emergency operating room where doctors tried to save President Kennedy´s life after he was shot has been broken into pieces and covertly stored in crates for years, guarded as if it were a state secret. As the 50th anniversary in November of the President´s assassination nears, an investigative team from local Dallas station WFAA went digging for the exact location of the broken tiles and medical equipment used on that fateful day. They found that the room was formally destroyed in 1972 when Parkland Hospital was going through an expansion and Trauma Room 1 had to be demolished.

Every Memorial Day, when I run into the grocery store to pick up those last minute items for the three day weekend’s picnic, I’m met with members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) selling their poppies. We cherish, too, the poppy red/ that grows on fields where valor led; It seems to signal to the skies/that blood of heroes never dies-- “We Shall Keep the Faith” by Moina Michael -I remember as a kid that it was very common to see paper poppies being sold around Memorial Day. You could even go to the post office and purchase one

A 17-year-old boy and 22-year-old man were killed within hours of each other in separate West Side attacks Friday night, and a 29-year-old man was killed on the South Side, officials said. The youngest of the three killed was with an 18-year-old friend; both were shot about 11:30 p.m. in the 400 block of North Central Avenue in the Austin neighborhood. The 18-year-old´s condition has been stabilized at Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. The younger boy died at the scene. The 22-year-old was shot three times in the head and twice in the body

GUJRAT, Pakistan- At least 17 children were killed and 10 others injured when a gas cylinder on a school van exploded Saturday in northeastern Pakistan, officials said. The van, carrying 20 to 25 children, caught fire after the cylinder exploded, Dawn News reported. The driver survived but a teacher was reportedly killed, the BBC reported. The children, ages 5 to 15, were just a few miles from their school in Gujrat when the compressed natural gas canister exploded.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”
