Is it time to
filibuster Hagel?

Before you answer that question, take a look at this video from the Emergency Committee for Israel, which put together one of the most embarrassing episodes ever by a Cabinet nominee during a confirmation hearing: “Is it too much to ask,” ECI wonders, “that Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel knows the Obama administration’s policy on Iran?” Is it also too much to ask that a Cabinet nominee for a post this critical spend any time preparing on what was obviously going to be a central issue for the Armed Services Committee?

Comments:
If there was ever a time this is it. Hagel horrifying. Of course 0bama is perfectly capable of nominating the next radical who would be as bad or worse.

Why doesn´t the Emergency Committee for Israel first show their video to the Chair of the Defense Committee, Senator Levin, and to the 10 or 11 other Jewish members of the Senate who are all pro-Israel, and when one of them decides to filibuster, then perhaps the GOP oughta take a look at joining...

This veteran opposes Hagel as Sec. Def. If you agree, please let your Congresspersons know. Send them an email.

Republicans will take the heat and be tarred as obstructionists for filibustering Hagel.
This will be a political twofer for Obama.
He can blame Republicans ...as usual and
it will also give him cover to appoint
a qualified SecDef.
A nominee mulligan.
However , Republicans need to do this for the troops-still fighting and dying in Afghanistan.
And to a lesser degree , in Iraq.
1800 + US troops have died fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, since Obama took office in 2009.
Please don´t tell the media, both on the left and the right because it´s obviously a secret.
Someone has to have their backs.
It´s obvious that the CINC and the fumbling, bumbling,
Mr Magoo Hagel do not.

If Hagel had any brains, he would have stepped down from consideration by now.

Reply 5 - Posted by: horacer, 2/5/2013 1:05:50 PM     (No. 9160014)

In a sane world Hagel would do the honorable thing and withdraw. Republicans won´t filibuster. I doubt they could get 30 votes.

Reply 6 - Posted by: Blackeagle, 2/5/2013 1:11:28 PM     (No. 9160032)

Maybe McCain is right. Vote against the guy but don´t filibuster. Hagel is a reflection of, an alter-ego of, Obama. Obama is going to wreak the military with or without Hagel. Let Obama ´own´ the destruction.

Reply 7 - Posted by: TXknitter, 2/5/2013 1:16:05 PM     (No. 9160040)

Hagel - If he had any honor, he would withdraw his name.

Senate Republicans- A filibuster? McCain torpedoed that yesterday. They haven´t the nerve anyway. The Republicans should do the honorable thing no matter WHAT the press says. In this case, no Republican should vote yes.

Give him an "up or down" vote and let Obama own this disaster of a nomination. A filibuster provides Obama too easy of an "out" and allows him to paint Republicans with the usual "obstructionist" brush. Hagel is just a pass-thru for Obama´s policies as it is, and he would inevitably nominate someone else who subscribes to his same worldview in the end. I actually think Hagel´s performance was so disastrous that we will see some Democrats change votes to not support his nomination. That would be the ultimate loss of political capital and leverage for The One.

So to extend my reply #1...what we now know is that when Obama spoke to Bibi 8 days ago to congratulate him on his election, he closed on the dates of his first trip to Israel as president...by definition, this was orchestrated and review by both sides before the call, just 3 days before the Hagel hearings...now the WH announces the trip just before the confirmation vote...Sen. Levin and others are jockeying for seats on Air Force One...

Make them smoke the whole damn pack of Hagels.

Days before Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan landed in Washington, D.C., for a series of high profile meetings, an influential liberal think tank with ties to the White House released a report that highlighted its cozy relationship with wealthy foreign benefactors from Turkey. The Center for American Progress (CAP) issued a report, “Freedom of the Press and Expression in Turkey,” on May 14 that critics say downplays the Turkish government’s increasingly authoritarian crackdown on press freedoms. CAP did not disclose in the report that it receives money from a Turkish business group named TUSKON.

Senate Democrats picked up some GOP reinforcements in their bid to get to a conference on a House-Senate budget agreement. Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Susan Collins of Maine joined Budget Chairwoman Patty Murray, D-Wash., on the floor in support of going to conference without imposing special mandates on conferees. McCain objected to a bid by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., to require that Senate budget negotiators not provide for an increase in the debt limit. Instead, McCain called for a more established process of offering nonbinding instructions.

Lois Lerner, the director of the IRS division that singled out conservative groups, invoked the Fifth Amendment Wednesday as she refused to testify at the start of a House oversight hearing on her agency´s controversial program. Lerner, before invoking that right, said in a brief opening statement that she had done nothing wrong, even though people might assume that by her decision not to answer questions from the committee. "I have not done anything wrong," she said. "I have not broken any laws. I have not violated any IRS rules or regulations, and I have not

J. Russell George, the inspector general who uncovered the IRS scandal, appears to have at one time dated Michelle Obama, well before she was married to Barack Obama. "All the attention was new, but George has operated in these halls of power his entire career. He worked for Dole, and then in President George H.W. Bush’s White House. In between, he attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 1988 alongside a young Michelle Obama (then Michelle Robinson)," reports National Journal. They weren’t in the same section – the academic groupings that Harvard uses to divide its students –

President Obama isn´t the only one whose fortunes are on the line in the face of a trio of explosive political scandals that are consuming Washington. The Justice Department´s monitoring of reporters, the Internal Revenue Service´s targeting of conservative groups and the White House´s handling of the Sept. 11 Benghazi, Libya, terrorist attack could also haunt Obama´s fellow Democrats, many of whom are already facing headwinds in next year´s midterm elections. With Republicans -- and much of the public -- convinced the controversies will linger into 2014, some Democrats a year and a half ahead

IRS Chain of Command Suggests Scandal
Not Limited to ´Low-Level Employees´

After the IRS revealed it had wrongly targeted hundreds of conservative and Tea Party groups, the agency claimed that the misconduct was limited to "low-level employees" in its Cincinnati office. Yesterday, the attorney for Lois Lerner, the head of the IRS’s tax-exempt organizations division, told the House Oversight Committee she would invoke her Fifth Amendment rights, making that explanation much less credible. Now the local Cincinnati Fox affiliate, FOX19, has done some digging and uncovered information suggesting that top officials at the IRS weren´t too far removed from the six low-level employees identified as making unjustified inquiries.

Tell us how you really feel, Joe Scarborough. The Morning Joe co-host devoted a segment on Wednesday to the Justice Department going after leaks — particularly the recently reported case involving Fox News. Scarborough railed against the Obama administration’s approach, charging that the actions were more damning because they’re aimed at “the opposition.” Scarborough questioned how this case is any different from the Pentagon papers, or the Cold War, etc. What makes President Obama think he’s any different? As Cokie Roberts responded to that thought, Scarborough couldn’t help but come back to a point

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

Former Rep. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement

While many Americans were tuned into news coverage of the massive damage from tornadoes ravaging the state of Oklahoma, Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse took to the Senate floor to rail against his Republican colleagues for denying the theory of anthropogenic global warming. Whitehouse spent 15 minutes chastising GOP senators and justified his remarks by alluding to states that seek federal assistance in the wake of natural disasters. “So, you may have a question for me,” Whitehouse said. “Why do you care?
