The £999 device uses a new digital motor to force air at 430mph out of wings mounted on the side of a conventional tap. Made from engineering-grade steel cut to 0.001mm of accuracy, the Tap is attached to the motor in a separate unit which also contains springs and silencers to minimise vibration and noise. Infrared sensors control when water is produced and when air is blown onto the hands to dry them. The Airblade Tap claims to dry a user’s hands in just 12 seconds, and eliminates the need to walk across a bathroom floor to a hand dryer.

Over $1600 for one of these beauties. But for dry hands in 12 seconds instead of using an air dryer for 20 seconds then wiping your hands on your jeans, I´d buy one!

My friend used to say his BMW 1600 was ´over-engineered´ every time it broke, this reminds me of that. A LOT of engineering for the world´s tiniest problem. You shake the water off your hands and for the brief seconds you walk to the hand drying area, the water clings to your skin. Big deal, you ´save´ a couple of steps by using a complicated antler set of pipes that will be dripping with soap minutes after installation. If you are in AZ just walk out of the restroom and your hands will be dry in three steps toward your car.

sorry luddites, Sam´s has these where i live and they are just great. Slip your hands in, pull them out slowly, and you are dry. As fast or faster than pulling out 2 sheets(one is never enough and many dispensers only allow one at a time), swabbing your hands, and doing a hook shot into the garbage can.

"Engineering grade"? Meaningless. Give me an ASTM number, Matt.
And really -- "0.001 mm"? Do you have any idea how minute that is? Counting on my toes, I think that´s about 4/100,000 of an inch! [0.0397 = 1 mm x 0.001 = about 0.00004"] Matt, baby -- what are the plus-minus tolerances? Millionths of an inch? And really -- 4/100,000ths is supposed to be repeatably-manufacturable?
Matt the Technology Editor seems to be gullible, ignorant, or both. And if Dyson´s claiming these numbers, I´m not buying either the claims or the products.
There´s a time and place to "push" technology. Lots of them, in fact. Going bonkers over fluid mechanics applied to hand drying? Ummm -- no. That´s not the place. YMMV.
[I just cut two holes in the door of a microwave oven I got at Goodwill for $5, and hooked it up to a GFI breaker.]

The Metropolitan Police has defended the way it responded to reports of the killing in Woolwich, south London, after questions were raised about how long it took officers to reach the scene. The force said police were there within nine minutes of the first emergency call and firearms officers were at the scene five minutes after that. Mayor Boris Johnson was heckled when he visited the area. BBC London´s Home Affairs Correspondent Guy Smith spoke with Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley, former Metropolitan Police Commander John O´Connor and Roger Gray, a former firearms officer.

HANAHAN--The U.S. Naval Brig is once again being mentioned as a leading alternative to put terror detainees on trial after President Barack Obama this week rekindled his push to shut down the terror-suspect holding site at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. “I once again call on Congress to lift the restrictions on detainee transfers from Gitmo,” he said. “I have asked the Department of Defense to designate a site in the United States where we can hold military commissions.” Speculation immediately re-focused on the brig at Charleston as a leading choice where some of the 166 detainees could go on trial.

People taking statins face an increased risk of developing diabetes, warn researchers. They found a 10 percent extra risk linked to taking simvastatin--the most commonly prescribed anti-cholesterol drug--which rose to 22 percent for those taking atorvastatin. Previous research into a suspected link with statins found a 9 percent rise in the chance of patients developing diabetes, but the new study looked at specific brands of drug. Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
