Progress is uncertain in N.J. for
African-American history curriculum

The Record [Hackensack, NJ], by Monsy Alvarado

Original Article

More than a decade ago, New Jersey became one of the first states to pass a law calling for school districts to infuse African-American history into their social studies curriculum. During the past three years, 584 school districts, universities and libraries statewide have linked to the curriculum provided on the Amistad Commission’s website, the state says. In Bergen County, 82 districts, colleges and charters have registered to access the curriculum, and in Passaic County that number is 25. And teachers are encouraged to attend training sessions on how to integrate black history into their regular lessons.

Comments:
Proponents of state-mandated black history course materials complain that non-black educators are insufficiently enthusiastic, say emphasis needs to transcend black history month to become an everyday focus.

Perhaps they also wonder why homeschooling and private and parochial schools are booming.

Reminds me of the Alex Haley type of "history" which mesmerized the country. Until it was found out that he copied it (some word for word) from a piece of published fiction.

I remember learning about George Washington Carver, Frederic Douglass and Harriet Tubman during the unenlightened days of the 50´s and early 60´s. How did historians figure out to include historical African-Americans without having state laws telling them to?

It´s called history. Period. No need to divide it into who created it at a certain moment in time.

Oh, geez...is it black history monf again? I guess the history channel will be falling over itself to show how progressive it is.

It´s not black history month per se,it´s black rabble rouser month. That´s what gets them excited.

I actually enjoy reading and hearing about black inventors but they´re rarely mentioned.George Washington Carver probably being the most prominent. But Eli Whitney was right up there.

History ought to be taught as a collective, acknowledging difference makers throughout time, each race doesn´t need it´s own month.

I would rather little Johnnie learned to read and write first.

Is this going to be the real history or the manufactured PC one ?

Are not blacks in this country American? Why the special curriculum for Africa? If blacks want another nation´s history, they should just move there.

Like #3, I remember learning all about famous black Americans back in the 50´s and 60´s when I went to grade and high school. I went to Catholic grade school and was always in an integrated school. Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman were just famous Americans to me. They weren´t singled out.

I still remember when a fire and brimstone black activist got in my face and said, "did you know Timbuktu was a real place" and I said, "yeah, it´s the capital of Mali and was site of a big trading empire" She really cooled her jets then.

A hotly contested gun-control law that was passed in 2007 is finally ready to be implemented, Attorney General Kamala Harris said Friday: a requirement that every new semiautomatic handgun contain "micro-stamping" technology that would allow police to trace a weapon from cartridges found at a crime scene. The law, signed by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, made California the first state to require micro-stamping, which engraves the gun´s serial number on each cartridge. A second ´house of horrors´ abortion clinic is being investigated in Texas, just days after Dr Kermit Gosnell was found guilty of murdering newborns at his Philadelphia termination center. Houston doctor Douglas Karpen is accused by four former employees of delivering live fetuses during third-trimester abortions and killing them by either snipping their spinal cord, stabbing a surgical instrument into their heads or ´twisting their heads off their necks with his own bare hands´. Other times the fetus was so big he would have to pull it out of the womb in pieces, Karpen´s ex-assistant, Deborah Edge, said

President Francois Hollande will decide by the end of July whether France should impose new taxes on technology giants like Apple and Google to finance cultural projects, a move that could feed into an anti-business image days after a spat with Yahoo!. The Socialist government asked former Canal Plus CEO Pierre Lescure to find new ways of funding culture during an economic downturn, in line with France´s "cultural exception" argument that such projects must be shielded from market forces. While far from becoming laws, the proposals could worsen tension between France and technology giants after Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg

Montgomery, Alabama – Acting state Democratic Party Chairwoman Nancy Worley lowered her head and slowly shook it side to side when summing up the financial condition of her once powerful party. "We´re broke, broke, broke," Worley told the party´s Executive Board in a special called meeting Frida. How broke is broke? Worley didn´t sugar coat the answer. "This is my 18th day as chair and thirty minutes after I took over on April 22nd the landlord of the building where our party headquarters are came in and said he wanted us out, that the rent was overdue and was always overdue,"

Trenton — Police officials are examining the response to a 911 call Sunday night that left a city man struggling with an intruder at his building without any officers arriving. Dan Dodson said it was 20 or 30 minutes before two officers eventually arrived in response to his wife’s calls to police telephone numbers. “We’re looking into it to determine if the proper protocols were followed,” Lt. Steve Varn said yesterday evening. Yesterday, Dodson said he was deciding where to buy a baseball bat in case someone else was able to slip into his home. He believes one of the two

The Internal Revenue Service relies on technology more than ever to sniff out tax cheats using robo-audits and data mining—but so far it has caught lot of minnows, and big fish are still eluding detection. Even as millions of people´s accounts are screened online and matched against their digital files elsewhere, the IRS´s data-detection tools come nowhere close to collecting the $400 billion in tax dodges estimated to take place each year. Debris haulers´ windfall:
Odd math jacks up Sandy tab
The Record [Hackensack, NJ], by Shawn Boburg    Original Article

After superstorm Sandy struck, mountains of rubble were collected and taken to temporary storage sites. In Ocean County, those locations included a parking lot in Ortley Beach, a ball field in Bay Head, a recycling center in Berkeley. From there, trucks hauled it all to the county landfill in Manchester. The distances of those trips varied. But on bills submitted by the debris removal firm, they had something in common: They were all recorded as being just over or, in some cases, exactly 16 miles. Coincidence? Doubtful. Under the state’s contract with the cleanup firm, AshBritt Inc., 16 miles is

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement

While many Americans were tuned into news coverage of the massive damage from tornadoes ravaging the state of Oklahoma, Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse took to the Senate floor to rail against his Republican colleagues for denying the theory of anthropogenic global warming. Whitehouse spent 15 minutes chastising GOP senators and justified his remarks by alluding to states that seek federal assistance in the wake of natural disasters. “So, you may have a question for me,” Whitehouse said. “Why do you care?
