daughter dies

Essie Mae Washington-Williams, the mixed-race daughter of one-time segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond who kept her parentage secret for more than 70 years to avoid damaging his political career, has died. She was 87. Vann Dozier of Leevy’s Funeral Home in Columbia, S.C., said Washington-Williams died Sunday. A cause of death was not given. Washington-Williams was the daughter of Thurmond and his family’s black maid. The identity of her famous father was rumored for decades in political circles and the black community. But not until after the South Carolina Republican died in 2003 at age 100 did Washington-Williams come forward

Nobody at Politico is old enough to have known Strom Thurmond. I did and I know how to spell his name.

Storm Thurmond.

Sounds like a pro wrassler.

Re #1 and #2, the story is too interesting to be dismissed for what is obviously a typo.

Can our threads become more lightweight?

Hung up on a misspelled headline (his name is fine in the intro). He was James Strom Thurmond. The Strom was his mother´s maiden name.

How´d y´all feel about the article?

We read it, yo. Very interesting.

A ridiculous headline typo like this cannot go unmocked. Not here. Relax.

Apologies for the double post.

In her picture she resembles her father. One thing that is positive regarding this, he did support her finacially that is much more than most men do today.

Long time Ldotters might recall this was the subject of many posts after the Senator´s death. May she R.I.P.

She was an amazing woman with an incredible story. The family was very supportive of her. She truly seems to have loved the Thurmond family. She even joined the Daughters of the Confederacy to trace her roots on her fathers side.

When the majority of these events occurred, Strom Thurmond was a Democrat.

Good article.

As for the headline, Spell Check will not save the writer from the correctly spelled incorrect word.

I grew up in SC and this was no "secret." Most people knew about her. It was hardly "sneaking" when you put your daughter through college and even visited her there in your State limousine with your State Trooper body guards. Geesshhhh! Thurmond was a stand up guy who took care of his daughter up until the day he died. How many black "baby daddies" do that for their daughters?

RIP

It´s odd that so many people who weren´t born in the south seem to know ´how it is´ here.

Raymond Maxwel --one of the four State Department officials disciplined over security lapses that led to the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, last year -- is also a prolific poet. And he´s been publishing provocative verses since he was put on administrative leave December 18. Some of the poetry represents scathing commentary on the post-Benghazi fallout and implies that he feels like he´s been made a scapegoat. In "Trapped in a purgatory of their own deceit," Maxwell writes in part: "The web of lies they weave / gets tighter and tighter / in its deceit

Whatever else happens as a result of the multiple controversies that have engulfed the administration, one thing is clear: President Obama has failed to meet one of the most important goals he set out when he was first elected, which was to demonstrate that activist government could also be smart government. (Snip) As he put it then: “I think what you saw in this election was people saying, ‘Yes, we don’t want some big, bureaucratic, ever-expanding state. On the other hand, we don’t want a state that’s dysfunctional, that doesn’t believe in its mission, that can’t carry out

Washington – Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-MO, issued a video statement Friday in response to reports that the Internal Revenue Service unfairly targeted conservative nonprofit groups. (Snip) “There’s a reason Lady Justice wears a blindfold in America. That is because in America, we don’t apply the law based on who you are, who you know, or what you believe. We apply the law equally.” “We should not only fire the head of the IRS, which has occurred, but we’ve got to go down the line and find every single person who had anything to do with this and make sure

Richmond, Va.—Virginia´s activist conservative attorney general has won the Republican Party´s gubernatorial nomination by acclamation. At the GOP´s statewide convention, thousands of conservatives and tea party followers who dominated the Richmond Coliseum on Saturday roared their unanimous support for Ken Cuccinelli. He was unopposed for the nomination and is generally beloved by the tea party for his aggressive challenges to federal mandates. Cuccinelli is an abortion foe who was the first state attorney general to challenge President Barack Obama´s health care reforms in 2010. He faces former Democratic National Committee chairman and Clinton family protege Terry McAuliffe

House votes to repeal ObamaCare

The House voted to repeal ObamaCare on Thursday for the third time since Republicans took over the chamber in 2011. Only two Democrats sided with Republicans in the party-line 229-195 vote — Jim Matheson (Utah) and Mike McIntyre (N.C.). All Republicans voted in favor of repeal. This is the 37th time the House GOP has voted to repeal or defund at least part of the bill, but this latest bill will also not become law given Democrats´ control of the Senate. Still, many House Republicans had clamored for the bill from Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) to be considered,

Here are some highlights from the profile: Known in the White House as “Danny,” Mr. Werfel graduated from Cornell University, earned a master’s degree in public policy from Duke University and a law degree from the University of North Carolina. What did President Obama do on the evening of 9/11/12 when our men were under attack in Benghazi? The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. This morning when Wallace asked Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer what Obama was up to that evening, Pfeiffer declared the line of inquiry “offensive.” Translation: Obama and his minions would prefer to “move on” and are warning the likes of FNC off:(Snip for video)The Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper has posted the rush transcript

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement
