Is your 401K about
to be nationalized?

WASHINGTON ? The $19.4 trillion sitting in personal retirement accounts like the 401K may be too tempting an apple for a government that is quite broke, both monetarily and morally. The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau director Richard Cordray recently mentioned these accounts in a recent interview, stating “That’s one of the things we’ve been exploring and are interested in, in terms of whether and what authority we have.” This agency, created by the 2010 Dodd-Frank-Act, is very concerned about how safe your retirement savings are. They are apparently concerned that retiring baby boomers may become

Just in case we don´t have enough to get upset and enraged about this is mentioned. I don´t even know what to say anymore.

Democrats have been mentioning this for several years. When I have mentioned this to co-workers and friends, they look at me like I am some sort of nut.

Of course, these are the same people who voted for Obama, and believe Social Security has an account with their name on it.

They have a very serious financial hangover headed their way.

Filthy Communist pig ØbaMugabe is stocking up on ammo and guns so he and his Black Panther good can shoot anyone who tries to resist. We have lived theiugh a soft coup and most stupid bastidges have no clue what just happened. My family has been in America since colonial times, so i dont have any other country in which to claim dual citizenship and to which i could immigrate for my iwn safety and financial security. I will stay. But this sly, cunning communist , illegitimate son of a pinko tramp and a pervertt, has made me want to leave my own country, because he has fundamentally altered what America is. And the sheeple followed.

At least two decades ago, I was cautioning my graduate students in my employee benefits seminar about the risk of government, tempted by the low hanging fruit of 401K accounts, grabbing them.
If President Hologram makes a move towards grabbing the money, there will be a run on those accounts, with millions of people cashing out, thus depressing the stock market.
Just when I think the administration has proposed the most stupid idea, they prove me wrong.
And - if you have a 401(K), you can remove the money, but you have to pay a 10% penalty, along with regular income taxes.

Another good example of an issue of importance which is never mentioned prior to an election.

The hook will be a "guaranteed" interest rate (2%?) that is locked in AS inflation hits. I.e., it will be made "palatable" to economic illiterates. How many of us have the guts to pull it NOW and pay penalties and/or get bumped into higher tax brackets?

Reply 10 - Posted by: Cardsfan, 2/4/2013 9:47:22 AM     (No. 9157201)

While I doubt they would do this, it´s likely they are spreading this rumor to panic us into cashing in our 401k´s so they get their tax bite early.

Reply 11 - Posted by: olcap, 2/4/2013 9:58:48 AM     (No. 9157241)

So, if they STEAL our 401Ks, and we have no retirement money, will that make us freeloaders too?

Other people´s money. Marxist/socialists always feel they have a right to distribute same as they see fit. The more desperate they become to maintain their own power and position, the more appealing these retirement accounts will become. They want them and, if we keep allowing them into positions of power, they WILL take them.

Do not relax. Everyone seems to think someone will do something about the situation when it gets bad enough.
Too little too late by then. Something needs to be done now -- but our Supreme Court has apparently already fallen.

Just after obama got into the Oval Office, Polosi was commenting on the confiscation of the 401Ks, anunities, and all savings to be doled out monthly by the Government. Since then I have been moving mine and doling out to my kids. Much rather they have the largest chunk of funds rather than the government.

The Leftists/Liberal/Progressives voted for Mr. o. and the welfare state, what did they think would fund this Utopia? The tax the rich scheme? Ha! Wait until they add 30 million illegal immigrants to the welfare rolls, collapse will quickly follow.

Reply 19 - Posted by: Mass Minority, 2/4/2013 10:49:33 AM     (No. 9157389)

They will not take our 401k´s they know that would be political (and very likely physical) suicide. Remember a lot, and I mean a LOT of dems have very large 401k accounts.

What I am expecting they might try is to take away the tax advantages of the 401k. Tax both your and if you still have one, your employers contribution as income, then tax the interest on the account every year as income as well. This pushes a lot of folks into higher tax brackets and will dramatically increase your tax bill.

As an example take someone who is 55 and saved 20% of their salary every year for 20 years. The overall increase in their 401k this year was 75K mostly due to principle growth. The cost of losing the tax advantage of the 401k would have been $21,000. If the states followed suit tack on another $4000

Those most hurt, soon to be retirees who would completely lose much of the compounding so critical to financing a retirement that is not dependant on government funding.

Its a ripe target, but if the left tried to steal the 401k I suspect we would see an awful lot of folks on the left suddenly convert to a more originalist view of the second amendment.

This lawless administration is coming after your money and after your guns. The government cannot manage anything and yet it wants to get a hold of your money and manage that better than you can. Put up with this at your own risk!

Reply 21 - Posted by: RUReadyY3K, 2/4/2013 11:05:55 AM     (No. 9157433)

As #19 points out, the 401K is more likely, politically, to be an additional revenue generator. For example, the employer match totally avoids payroll taxes while employee contributions are hit with payroll tax right up front. Applying payroll tax on 401k´s for employer contributions would be a stealthy first step.

Reply 22 - Posted by: Kingbubo, 2/4/2013 11:33:20 AM     (No. 9157511)

#21, taxing the employe rmatch would be the camel´s nose

In addition to scr**ing all 401K participants, it would put the gub´mint in total control of the stock markets.

Reply 24 - Posted by: msjena, 2/4/2013 11:47:39 AM     (No. 9157555)

They could try to force people to take out more or take it out earlier. They want the taxes--at 20%, it would be $4 trillion.

The immigration reform bill drawn up by the Senate Gang of 8 would boost the economy and lower the deficit, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office says in a report out today. The newly released, and highly anticipated, report from the government’s nonpartisan bookkeeper comes as the Senate debates the bipartisan immigration legislation offered by the Gang of 8 and the House moves forward on a more piecemeal approach. NEW YORK — The New York Police Department´s widespread spying programs directed at Muslims have undermined free worship by innocent people and should be declared unconstitutional, religious leaders and civil rights advocates said Tuesday after the filing of a federal lawsuit. "Our mosque should be an open, religious and spiritual sanctuary, but NYPD spying has turned it into a place of suspicion and censorship," Hamid Hassan Raza, an imam named as a plaintiff, told a rally outside police headquarters shortly after the suit was filed in federal court in Brooklyn.

Mixed-race people are more likely to be considered black by conservatives, who are subconsciously attempting to “justify racial divisions,” said the authors of a new government-funded study. The report, originally released earlier this month, has begun attracting criticism from those who see political bias in the results. The study was conducted by graduate students and faculty in the psychology department of New York University. Researchers asked participants to look at pictures of mixed-race people and say whether they

The Clintons are getting the old band back together again for one last geriatric tour. Hillary 2016. Because 22 years of Clintons dominating the Beltway isn’t enough. Her campaign slogan: “Vote for me. I am a woman. What difference does it make?” The Draft Hillary movement is really taking off. There hasn’t been this much excitement behind a Draft Hillary movement since, well, the last time there was a Draft Hillary movement. Remember that? Back in 2008? When she was the “inevitable nominee?” She was the “most electable” Democrat running? She was the only one who

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is. Is he the dyed-in-the-wool liberal that his biggest supporters and critics suggest? Or is he a pragmatic, even cynical, politician who cares more for his popularity than taking risks for his ideological goals or living up to his rhetoric? Even in the short period since his reelection, Obama has provided evidence to support conflicting interpretations. His efforts to pass immigration reform, the unsuccessful push for stricter gun controls and tax hikes on high earners buttress the case for Obama-as-ideologue.

It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.
