| In the olden days miners brought canaries into mines because canaries were very sensitive to toxic fumes and would keel over quickly, giving the miners time to escape before they were rendered unconscious. The HHS mandate is serving a similar function in modern American culture. It´s making it clear that liberals believe in an all-powerful government, not the government empowered by the people that is enshrined in the Constitution. Historically in America, the government has rarely collided with the religious beliefs of even extreme groups.

Yep. Although it´s my opinion that the canary is abortion, and the canary has been dead since 1973.

´´If you were to bring an American from 1929, or even the middle of the New Deal, to modern America, he´d be shocked and probably appalled by the extent of government control over the lives of average Americans...´´
Many of us who are much younger than that are shocked and appalled. People got too comfortable not having to fight for their rights - they thought. So the camel´s nose began edging under the tent. One might call it the ´´big tent.´´ Will we abandon America or fight for it?

Let me tell you about the roaring twenties. My mother and father were from that generation. Have you ever seen "Chicago"? That generation was in rebellion against their parents just as the Boomers were in rebellion against my generation. I won´t say my parents were typical but because I was there and remember the era I can tell you that my generation was shocked at what some of our elders were getting up to. I guess we also resisted the generation just previous to ours. Being raised in the depression did not inspire a lot of exuberance.

We are in the midst of the worst Washington scandal since Watergate. The reputation of the Obama White House has, among conservatives, gone from sketchy to sinister, and, among liberals, from unsatisfying to dangerous. No one likes what they´re seeing. The Justice Department assault on the Associated Press and the ugly politicization of the Internal Revenue Service have left the administration´s credibility deeply, probably irretrievably damaged. They don´t look jerky now, they look dirty. The patina of high-mindedness the president enjoyed is gone. Something big has shifted.

Before Washington was rocked in recent days by an assortment of brewing scandals, immigration reform was at center stage. And immigration reform will surely return shortly to the heart of Washington debates as Congress considers legislation proposed by Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio and his bipartisan "Gang of 8" colleagues. Their bill would normalize the status of millions of illegal, mostly Hispanic immigrants. This has stimulated a vigorous debate among conservatives over the cost of reform, mostly in the form of public services for those with low skills and high needs.

There is a keen Kennedy-like vigor to Joe Biden that overwhelms any room. As was once said of Theodore Roosevelt, he, too, wants to be the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral. Unlike President Obama, who speaks in interviews with Hemingway-esque sparseness, Biden rambles like Thomas Wolfe, painting a robust picture of an ever-changing America where coal miners will soon be working in clean-tech jobs, gun-safety laws will be tougher and China will be reined in by the White House from poisoning the planet with megatons of choking pollutants.

Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, is facing fresh scrutiny over her political activities in the former East Germany, with a book alleging she took part in the Communist regime’s propaganda activities. Ms Merkel is the first chancellor to come from the German Democratic Republic. As a physicist in the 1980s she was a member of the communist youth organisation “Freie Deutsche Jugend” at the Academy of Sciences in Eastern Berlin and was in charge of “agitation and propaganda”, the journalists Ralf Georg Reuth and Günther Lachmann claim in their book The First Life of Angela M.

The controversy embroiling the IRS kicked up another storm of rhetoric Monday over enforcement of campaign finance laws. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell connected allegations that the IRS improperly targeted conservative groups for extra scrutiny to a Democratic-led effort to expand campaign finance disclosure requirements known as the DISCLOSE Act. McConnell told the National Review that the bill to require corporations, unions and super PACS to report large expenditures “should go nowhere.”

According to Politico, Anthony Weiner has hired one staffer in preparation for his run for mayor of New York City. Two sources said that they couldn’t tell Politico the staffer’s name or what position he/she will assume under the former Congressman. The revelation follows weeks of speculation that Weiner is seeking a redemptive run for the mayor’s office. Speculation has raged that he has been looking for potential aides and staffers. Although Weiner’s pollster, Joel Benenson, has been hired by New York City Council speaker Christine Quinn, Weiner’s ad man, Jim Margolis of GMMB,

For nearly eight months now, Republicans in Congress have been confounded by the apparent lack of public interest in, or concern about, what actually happened in the Sept. 11, 2012 Libyan terrorist attacks in Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. But Wednesday’s dramatic hearing by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee shined new light on the issue. It brought out more details of possible Obama administration mismanagement while the attacks were underway and potential coverup in its aftermath.

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement

While many Americans were tuned into news coverage of the massive damage from tornadoes ravaging the state of Oklahoma, Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse took to the Senate floor to rail against his Republican colleagues for denying the theory of anthropogenic global warming. Whitehouse spent 15 minutes chastising GOP senators and justified his remarks by alluding to states that seek federal assistance in the wake of natural disasters. “So, you may have a question for me,” Whitehouse said. “Why do you care? Why do you, Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, care
