| An Alabama man holding a terrified young boy hostage in an underground bunker might not be giving up any time soon, authorities said. Police were negotiating through a 4-inch ventilation pipe with the man, believed to be Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65,a Vietnam veteran and retired truck driver with a wicked temper and a history of threatening neighbors. Authorities were tight lipped about the conversation with Dykes but said the hostage situation, which entered its fifth day on Saturday, might stretch on for a while. I do not think that talking to a reporter is really what the old killer wants, I think he wants to kill the child and then blame it on the media and he should be shot the minute he comes out - what a despicable creature it is and I shudder to think that there are probably more of them all over the USA.

They´re not in a house, #3 - they´re in a very small (approx. 6´x8´) underground bunker.
"Sleeping gas" as you call it would likely kill both the boy and the nutbag, as that sleeping gas would eventually (soon) cause suffocation.

Do any of our "hostage experts" remember the Chechen schoolhouse situation. The Russians pumped narcotic gas into the school. It killed half of the hostages. Some people watch too many "Mission Impossible" movies.

#8: that was actually the theater in Moscow. The Chechens took over a theater and held it for ... two days, IIRC. The Russians eventually pumped in gas and over two hundred hostages were killed by it. And those were adults.
The amount of gas needed to put the man to sleep would kill the child.

One of two men allegedly being questioned in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings was shot and killed by an FBI agent in Florida on Tuesday, (Snip)A friend of Ibragim Todashev said he and Todashev were being investigated as part of the Boston bombings. He said Todashev, 27, knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because both were MMA fighters. The man claims he and Todashev were interviewed by the FBI for nearly three hours on Tuesday. The friend said he left the interview, and when he came back to the apartment he found that there had been a shooting.

We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W.
