| Lately there have been a number of analogies made between various liberal political positions and the abolitionist Union side in the Civil War. No doubt this is a result of the 2012 Steven Spielberg movie Lincoln, and its notoriety, and the universal need to identify with the virtuous side of any historical struggle.[Snip]As a gun owner, I resent the comparison. But if there are any credible analogies to be made with today´s political movements and Abraham Lincoln, it is between the Union side of the Civil War and today´s Republican Party.

I had the same thought. The GOP just has McClellan´s, and why not? The pay is good, no real responsibilities, grudging MSM respect as long as you stay in line, get invited to swell parties.
Hey, who wants to end up like Sarah Palin? She´s still in Wasilla. Who wants to end up in a place like that? (Worse, she likes it there.) That´s where principle and conviction and ideas gets you.

The existing Republican establishment does not seem to be up to the job at hand. It looks like they are playing by an entirely different set of rules than the other side is using - and with which they have been winning.
The very things that characterize Republicans and conservatives -emotional maturity, respect for the truth, good manners, cautiousness and moderation etc.- handicap them in dealing with radicals and extremists of the Left, for whom winning power is all that counts.

The GOP needs a General Lee.
Lee always planned to make the best use of what he had.
Grant really had no plan other than to keep pushing men forward to exhaust the Confederacy´s ammunition.

please do realize that Reagan was the exception and not the rule.
i just do not understand why people expect republicans to do things they have never done. our last two nominees could not even challenge a lite weight like 0bama.

The Sequester is turning out worse than losing tenure. It’s always a knee-slapper when American university professors and administrators, representatives of one of the most extravagantly funded and unaccountable industries in the history of the world, complain they are being underfunded and that the world will suffer as a result. And you thought politicians were good at conflating their personal interests with those of the cosmos.

The exact time when the government ceased serving ´We the People´ and became our master is impossible to pinpoint. The best estimate coincides with the beginnings of the progressive (isn´t "regressive" a better description?) movement and Theodore Roosevelt. What TR started, Woodrow Wilson, president of the United States from 1913-1921, expanded exponentially and the movement was on.

In the political battle over sequestration, President Obama is jumping full-tilt into a scorched-earth tactic: eliminating tuition assistance for the Marines and Army. Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), who outlined billions in cuts the president could look at to eliminate wasteful spending. First from the op-ed, options abound: Federal dollars were spent to study "how cocaine affects the reproductive habits of Japanese quail" at a cost of $181,000. Fourteen point eight million dollars is spent on unemployment checks sent to millionaires.

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement
