High Culture Belongs
at Inaugurations

In the days since the second Obama inauguration, I´ve been thinking about Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce. No, not the great lip-synching controversy, but the choice of popular entertainment for a solemn national rite. That Beyonce apparently lip-synched her beautiful rendition of the national anthem is a triviality. It´s cold on the steps of the Capitol and even the greatest singer might have trouble sounding good in those conditions. Kelly Clarkson apparently sang live (and perhaps paid a price in quality). Four years ago, at Obama´s first inauguration, a quartet consisting of Yo-Yo Ma, Yitzhak Perlman,

Comments:
0bama, Mooch and his regime wouldn´t know "high culture" if it smacked them in the face. They have degraded and diminished the office of the president worse than any president in the history of this country. Denyce Graves would have been a better choice. Her singing of Lord´s Prayer as she did at Ford´s funeral will bring tears to your eyes.

It´s the Kardashian presidency. Cheap and tawdry is the best we can expect.

Obama picked entertainers who would appeal to his low-information voters.

Surprised Barry and Mooch didn´t show up in the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Accompanied by Anthony Weiner and Huma.

In this day & age of our history, that is "High Culture" At least they didn´t screech, spit & grab their crotch.

To Obama voters this was high culture. When I was in 2nd grade we were taught to dance the Minuet. That was at a public school. The teacher spent a lot of time making sure we did it properly. Today she´d probably be fired for not teaching the Dougie. Who needs all these dead Europeans with their literature, fine art and music. We got Snoop Dog.

High culture? Not in this Presidency. Marian Anderson sang the Nat´l Anthem at President Eisenhower´s 2nd inauguration. The way it should be sung.

Let me add criticism of the whole poetry thing. And not just that Barry ignores the poet laureate (that´s right, we have one) in favor of his latest thrill in special classes...

I mean that the poetry thing is stupid. The orator at the inauguration is (should be) the president. Plain and simple.

You want to have a poet speak at one of the dinners...fine.

But at the inauguration...no good. Even Robert Frost was no good. There, I said it. And Democrats will not get it. Not since JFK did the thing.

While I understand the author´s point, I think it´s a little uninformed to think that many of the pop vocalists of today do not work to hone their craft. To assume that your musical choice (classical, opera) renders you more cultured or professional than say, a jazz, blues, or even rock musician shows a pofound ignorance of the arts. I can´t speak to Beyonce or Ms. Clarkson, but many pop, rock, and jazz performers work hard to develop their skills, musically or vocally.

I will admit that many of the genres aren´t necessarily well represented by the tops in their field. Beyonce has turned out to be an odious, smug human being and I´m defending people like Snoop Dogg or Eminem. However, I´m sure Mariah Carey, Winford Marsallis, and even Dave Grohl work hard to be better at their craft.

Correction: I´m NOT defending Snoop Dogg or Eminem.

You have to have culture to know there´s a high and a low version. You also, as the leader of a country, should go with what is appropriate for your people to feel proud. All that is missing here, sigh.

I watched very little of the inauguration & kept turning to the Food Network but when I saw Zero had picked Beyonce for his "base" I angrily changed channel immediatey. As for Kelly Clarkson I thought she was wonderful, sang all stanzas of that patriotic song & I read that before the election she backed Romney. Was very surprised he picked her - but she is a patriotic Texas young woman. I even wrote Lamar Alexander a strong email about the fact that we were not an African,Asian or Mexican country but an Anglo Saxon culture which most Americans have forgotten. I watched none of the inauguration. But I saw one image that I will not forget as long as I live. It was Michelle Obama at lunch with her elbows on the table, shoveling food into her mouth while rolling her eyes at House Speaker Boehner.

When it comes to the national anthem my feeling is that it should not be a ´performance´ for some singer, but instead the audience should all be asked to join in singing. It is still done that way in a few venues, and it is so powerful and meaningful. I´m probably in the minority but that´s ok with me.

U.S. military sources serving in North Africa are challenging the latest White House claim that the administration is applying "all the resources" at its disposal to bring the Benghazi attackers to justice, charging instead that the Obama administration knows who is responsible but is not acting. "They have let it slip by because of politics, and now we´ve taken all the correlation we had and dropped the ball because of risk (aversion) -- and now the security in Libya is more fragile than ever," one U.S. special operator told Fox News. The source, speaking on condition of anonymity,

Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse has apologized for remarks Monday in which he linked Oklahoma "cyclones" to climate change while berating Republicans for their stance on the issue -- around the time a massive tornado killed dozens in that state. A Whitehouse spokesman said Tuesday the politically charged remarks were pre-written as part of the senator’s weekly Senate floor speech on climate change. “Tragically and unbeknownst to the senator at the time, a series of tornadoes were hitting Oklahoma at the same moment he gave his remarks,” the spokesman said.

During a panel discussion on the Department of Justice seizing the phone records of Fox News’ James Rosen, Bret Baier revealed that the seizure included the phone records of Rosen’s parents. The entire panel agreed the scandal was an outrage, with Kirsten Powers pointing out that there have been a number of high-profile leaks from the Obama administration, but the only ones they seem interested in going after are the ones that make them look bad. Charles Krauthammer found it amazing that the government would make such a “huge assault on the first amendment” in trying to

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.
