Ed Koch, the brash, colorful often confrontational mayor who helped to lead New York City out of its brush with bankruptcy in the 1970s, launching an astonishing municipal turnaround that continues to this day, has died. He was 88. Koch was recently readmitted to the hospital after being treated for water in his lungs, The Associated Press reported. A spokesman confirmed the news of Koch's death early this morning. Koch battled pneumonia in December and was being treated with antibiotics, and he was hospitalized and treated for anemia in September.

Comments:
Rest in peace Mayor Koch. You were authentic, spoke your mind and always did your best. You had common sense and in your own words, you were not looney as are most liberals. Thanks for getting my city fixed financially, and setting the stage for Mayor Guiliani to really turn around the Big Apple.

I hope Ed Koch is reunited with his good friend Cardinal John O´Connor in heaven. I may not have always agreed with Hizzoner, but I always respected him.

RIP Ed Koch.

He used to call Al Sharpton - "Al Charlatan".
He was also a true friend of Israel and remained so after his party was completely overtaken by the dark side.

RIP

When I think "colorful" I think Ed Koch. I´m going to miss his presence on the political scene. And he´s the same age as my father (we lost Mom before Christmas, of similar sounding complications as the mayor). It all makes me feel sad. Baruch dayan emet.

Wow. Another good person dead.

His presence will be missed. I still can´t respect his endorsement of Obama both times, maybe it was onset dementia.

RIP, Mayor Koch.

Which means there really aren´t any Democrat/liberals left who really want to save America.

Sad. We need more people who can disagree but find ways to work together. And the left has decided that´s not their way anymore.

I liked Koch. He was a good interview and didn´t mince words. Certainly didn´t agree with everything he said or believed but I thought he was a more honest politician than most. RIP

Never been to NY, but I always imagined that Ed Koch represented all that was the best of NYC. Now Shumer and his ilk represent all that is the worst. RIP Mr. Mayor.

Good take #12.
I shook hands w hizzoner once at the 86th St. subway entrance when he was campaigning. A pleasant man.
Politics a mess.
May you RIP Mayor, God speed.

One of the few liberals who was actually a friend of Israel.

Ed Koch was colorful, but frankly he played better out of town. Understand that it was really all about Ed making headlines and his own self-importance. He endorsed a good man, Jim Turner, for the Weiner congressional seat basically to get noticed, held Obama up on the Israel support to get noticed just so Obama to kiss his ring--because any smart person knew Obama´s hate for Israel, etc. Being a good Village lib, any hip person knew he´d support Zero in the end no matter what. Did he campaign for Turner on the second round? No. He´d get on NY radio on Mark Simone or John Gambling and bloviate.

As to being mayor, Koch presided of the decline of NYC, particularly in his last 4 years 1986-90, and for the 4 year unmitigated disaster that was David Dinkins. (Bless you, Rudy!)

Apologies for the grammar slips above: ´Obama would kiss his ring´, ´presided over the decline´. Lest I sound unsympathetic, RIP Ed: we did have some good years with you in the first term.

He was a Liberal but not a Leftist. Exchanged greetings with him on the Upper East Side a few years ago. RIP.

His foibles were outweighed by his sense of decency.

Was saddened recently when he said he knew Obama would backtrack on support for Israel.

Koch did support GW Bush over albore and kerry, IIRC.

Honest. Candid. Decent.
How am I doin? Mr. Mayor, you did good.

Agree w/ many others. He had a sense of decency and ebullience that escapes most liberals today. RIP Hizzoner.

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lied to the Senate when he said there was never a “stand down” order during the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, 2012. “What was fascinating is that he explained his lie to them,” Joe DiGenova, an attorney representing one of the whistleblowers, told CNSNews.com. “He actually said they were sent to Tripoli. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Likening religious schools to segregation--a racist system that forced blacks to attend different schools and use different facilities than whites in the American South--President Barack Obama told a town hall meeting for youth in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Monday that there should not be Catholic and Protestant schools because such schools cause division. "Because issues like segregated schools and housing, lack of jobs and opportunity--symbols of history that are a source of pride for some and pain for others--these are not tangential to peace; they’re essential to it,"

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

Listening to Barack Obama give his speech in Belfast on Monday, it was hard not to stifle a yawn. I kept waiting for the part when he would say something interesting, but, about three quarters of the way through, realised it wasn’t going to come. Judging from television pictures some of his young audience felt the same, after the initial rush of euphoria of receiving the rock star president in their midst had passed. This is not surprising, for we had already heard this number about the inspirational role of the Northern Ireland peace process and the Emerald Isle’s

This is the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of How Democracies Perish, an analysis of the spread of world communism by Jean-François Revel, one of freedom´s most serious French defenders since Tocqueville. At the heart of this work, Revel details "The Tools of Communist Expansion," among which the most relevant for understanding our current situation comes in Chapter 16, "Ideological Warfare and Disinformation." The profound simplicity of Revel´s nuts and bolts account of totalitarianism´s Cold War advance, far from being obsolete

Celebrity chef Paula Deen admitted in a recorded deposition to telling racist jokes, using the N-word, and planning a slavery-themed wedding, according to multiple reports. The May 17 deposition where she made the alleged admissions is part of a $1.2 million lawsuit brought by Lisa Jackson, the former manager of a Savannah, Georgia, restaurant run by Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers. Jackson alleges in the suit that Deen used the N-word at the restaurant and that Hiers sexually harassed her. According to the reports, in the deposition, Deen replied “Yes, of course,”
