Citizenship question roils both
parties as immigration
debate gets underway

Washington Post, by Peter Wallsten and Rosalind S Helderman

Rising tensions over whether to give illegal immigrants a chance to pursue full citizenship could ruin what President Obama and congressional leaders agree is a pivotal moment in resolving long- simmering problems in the country’s immigration system. Immigrant advocates and their Democratic allies insist that now, at long last, is their time. After various failed proposals over the past decade, they finally feel they have the leverage to accept nothing less than a path to full citizenship for the millions of people living illegally in the country.

Fish Rot from the Head! No amnesty for obama.

Living ILLEGALLY is the key phrase. If they had applied for citizenship LEGALLY, then maybe they would already be U>S> citizens.

Enforcement must come first and there should not be a special path to citizenship for illegal aliens.

What Republicans should support is a conditional immigration status for longtime illegal aliens who have no criminal record. That status should allow the qualified illegal aliens to live here indefinitely as long as they abide by US laws, should include employment authorization, protection under all US laws, and authorization to travel to and from the USA.

If an alien holding the conditional status wants to go further towards permanent resident alien status (a green card) that alien should be required to qualify for an immigrant visa just like all legal immigrants must do. After attaining permanent residence the alien must attain five years residence in the USA just like all other legal immigrants generally must do and only then should the alien be qualified to petition for naturalization, which if granted confers US citizenship.

You better believe that most illegal aliens would jump at the chance to get such a conditional immigration status.

Former President of Mexico Vicente Fox used to advise that the vast majority of Mexicans living and working in the USA illegally are very proud of being Mexicans and just want the ability to work here with dignity, and to be able to travel back and forth to Mexico. A conditional status would give them all that.

Obama and the liberal Democrats want a streamlined path to citizenship for just about all illegal aliens, maybe between 11 and 20 million, because they know that most would readily become Democrat voters. If the Republicans ever give the Democrats the political cover to pass what Obama is demanding, they would be committing long term political suicide, as the Democrats could garner probably 10 million new voters after such a liberal amnesty.

Hispanics will vote for big government to get freebies. To get their vote it is not just Amnesty, you would have to vote them more welfare, FoodStamps, Obamaphones, etc etc. Amnesty is a loser for Republicans. Go with Jan Brewer and Sheriff Arpaio on this one.

We cannot afford 20-30 million more "Americans" on the Welfare Rolls. We are bankrupt. Surely even the Demonrats do not think that we can afford this influx of "takers".

FTA: Some liberals wondered whether the new commission would empower conservatives like Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) to complicate the citizenship process.

Complicate the citizenship process???

The citizenship process currently is very straightforward...you live in another country, you go to the local office of the US Consulate, and you fill out an application for an immigration visa. Easy-peasy, simple to do, all legal and above board.

What we have here are a bunch of co-conspirators advocating for an easier "path" for their co-conspirators to violate the letter and spirit of a plethora of our laws. Illegal entry, check. Identity theft for employment and benefits, check. DUI and driving without a license or insurance, oftentimes check. Taking a job that a legal immigrant or American would do if it were available, check. Taking welfare, food stamps and medical in the place (or ahead) of a needy American citizen, oftentimes check.

One cannot say that every criminal alien invader does every item on the above list, but all too many people willing to ignore one law, will also ignore all other laws when convenient.

Are we a nation of laws as I was told as a child, or are we so morally weak that we need criminal co-conspirators tell us what language we are allowed to use when referring to people who have not obeyed our laws, because it "hurts their self-esteem"?

Obama signals retreat in

President Obama delivered an address today at the National Defense University called “The Future of our Fight Against Terrorism.” Actually, part of the speech was about the past, including much self-congratulation and some shots at President Bush. This part of the speech is revisionist rubbish. As Max Boot explains: Obama said, for example, that after he came into office, “we unequivocally banned torture, affirmed our commitment to civilian courts, worked to align our policies with the rule of law, and expanded our consultations with Congress.” Umm, actually all of that happened in Bush’s second term.

In seventy lugubrious paragraphs, President Obama today asked America whether as commander-in-chief he should bomb terrorists. He concluded that sometimes he should, and sometimes he shouldn’t. He couldn’t quite make up his mind. Therefore, he would appoint a panel to advise him. Mr. Obama has already authorized more than 200 such drone bombings. His staff has bragged that before ordering a bombing, he personally reviews who lives and who dies. Imagine if Prime Minister Churchill or President Truman had appeared on television to announce an advisory panel before bombing our enemy. We would be appalled

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. -- The Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River collapsed Thursday evening, injuring an unknown number of people. Both the northbound and southbound portions of the bridge dropped into the river sometime before 7 p.m., according to Washington State Patrol trooper Mark Francis. Francis said several cars were on the bridge when it collapsed, and some are now in the water. Bart Treece with the Washington State Department of Transportation was unsure when the bridge was last inspected. "All of our bridges in the area are pretty old," he said.

Fox News chief Roger Ailes has sent a memo to his subordinates at the leading cable news network. He sent this memo to his staff today in connection with the federal investigation into an alleged leak to Fox News reporter James Rosen, a story that the Washington Post’s Ann E. Marimow broke earlier this week. The memo’s a masterpiece, too. For all those who wonder what it is about Ailes that endears his people to him — and that makes him such a good interviewee for any media reporter lucky enough to get an audience

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose

LONDON — British police late Thursday arrested a man and a woman in connection with the butchering of a British soldier on a London street, as anti-Muslim protests sprang up across the country. The arrests fueled speculation that the gruesome knife attack Wednesday — the first successful terrorist act in Britain since 2005 — was part of a wider plot, and prompted questions about the prevalence of Islamic extremism in the country and how to combat it. British officials moved quickly to increase security in London and other major cities Thursday as police raided

Three days of hearings have shown that IRS scrutiny of conservative organizations extended beyond a few rogue employees in Cincinnati, that the agency staged its announcement of the bad news to try to limit the damage, and that the White House knew more, and knew it earlier, than it first admitted. Republicans argue that they also uncovered evidence that the auditor’s report could have been completed months ago — even before the November elections. They also said an internal IRS investigation confirmed the untoward behavior as early as July 2012.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. She was determined to

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”
