Perhaps the most important moment so far in today’s Senate Judiciary hearing on guns came when astronaut Mark Kelly directly confronted NRA head Wayne LaPierre over the shooting of his wife, Gabrielle Giffords. Between that exchange and another one involving Senator Dick Durbin, LaPierre’s argument was completely unmasked for the sham that it is. During the hearing, LaPierre repeatedly voiced the talking point that there’s no need to expand the background check system because criminals don’t cooperate with background checks. Kelly responded: The Tuscon shooter was an admitted drug user. He was rejected from the U.S. Army
Comments: As if someone planning to commit murder will dutifully follow all other laws right up to the point of when they pull the trigger.
Folks, I have been mulling this over since the Newtown tragedy, and now is as good as time as any to state my opinion.
We are gonna lose on the 2nd Admendment and gun control. It is in the cards. Everyday a new shooting is blasted across the MSM. There is a concerted effort amongst the left to ram this full speed, and they are winning. Just like Obamacare, and the last election, this is being played to the ignorant low info public like so much theater.
Gun crime is not on the rise, statistically it is actually lower, but the media are intentionally playing up every shooting that might have a heart-string tug angle.
Believe me, I do not like being negative, but I do not see how we can get a positive message out to the masses.
Whats more preferable, having a more effective background check system that is more likely to keep firearms out of the hands of a few dangerous mentally ill people or taking away the 2nd Amendment rights of the entire population through a major firearms ban?
I watched the entire hearing (yes, glutton for punishment). There were no "gotcha" moments, nobody "smacked down" anyone. There were differences of philosophy and approaches, that´s it. Thanks, again, WaPo, for misreporting events.
Mark Kelly is a famewhore, and he is exploiting his wife - a woman who was actually ineligible to serve in congress for her ´home´ state, because she was a resident of Houston, Texas. (I realize that is a minor point, but I thought it should be said.)
The reality is that Gabby Giffords got a chunk of her brain destroyed in this shooting. Does she still have Executive functions to pass judgement on anything? or is she just reading whats been placed in front of her?
The anti-2nd Amendment crowd will pimp one victim (or family memeber) after another in a sickening, divisive exploitation.
And I´m surprised Mark Kelly had the smarts to be an astronaut. He is deliberately skating by the disgraceful mental health policies and lawsuits which shut down nearly all mental facilities in this country, allowing people who should have been involuntarily committed to roam free because it "feels good." Kelly may have had the right stuff, but no more.
At this point what does it matter how or why she was shot. The nut job was going to do what he was going to do one way or another. It´s all in the past now. We need to move on. There are more important things to worry about, like the Super Bowl and the Kardashians. /sarcasm off
Actually, it has become evident that the more the statist dems attack each of the Bill of Rights, the more law-breakers there seem to be coming out of the woodwork.
The remedies for preventing so many of the current crimes being perpatrated by mentally-ill individuals and/or by each criminal is to enforce EXISTING law and to re-examin the best way to address mental illness in this country! ...Duh!
Missus and I joined the NRA when in the Press Tirades after the Newtown SHOOTINGS. WE REALIZED THAT THE NRA, AND 2ND AMMENDMENT WERE GOING TO COME UNDER SERIOUS ASSAULT. Feel sorry for Ms Giffords, it was a shame what happened to her. The wackjob Loffner should have been in an institution, but the Liberals have weakened the Mental Health System to the point it virtually has no place to put the potentially, Violent Insane in a place where they can be watched and cared for. It seems now that Ms. Giffords has become a tool of those Liberals with an anti-gun ( 2nd Amendment) agenda. She is lead around by her husband ( whose political aspirations are evident) like an organ grinders monkey. Darn Shame for her. .
The background check system ALREADY demands that the information on those considered mentally incompetent be submitted to the NICS database. How about we just enforce the provisions of the current law??
"Universal Background check" is DemSpeak for Federal registration - their ´solution´ to a non-existant problem. Tyrants throughout history would agree- registration is what you need in order to conveniently take the next step - confiscation.
We are not losing on the 2nd Amendment. And there should be NO compromise. Not ONE inch. Unless of course, you´d just like to roll over and submit. /Rant
Lose on the 2nd Amendment?, What does that mean exactly? The right to keep and bear arms for protection from criminals, tyrants, etc, is inherent to our humanity via God Himself, not the Constitution. The 2nd amendment states that a government of men can´t infringe upon that God-given right. Anything less than a constitutional convention garnering the support of 2/3 of the states for modification, whatever the fools in DC come up wih is illegal and meaningless as far as I am concerned. I and millions like me have no intention of complying with whatever those decide to do. Additionally, the LE agencies in my part of the world have no intention of enforcing the nonsense from DC either.
It has been known for centuries that it is nearly impossible to stop a determined assassin who has little regard for his own fate in the process. If the guy who shot Giffords didn´t have a 30 round magazine he could have easily been toting several 10 rounders. Perhaps he would have had to pause for a second to replace a magazine, but that´s it. Those around him would have been too panicked and surprised to do anything while he swapped out magazines. That only happens in movies. He was going to get to her, period.
Ban high capacity magazines and all you really do is create a black market for them at a higher price, you won´t eliminate them. If banning something through law made it go away, well we wouldn´t have any marijuna, lsd, heroine, cocaine, or even rape and murder, would we?
What happened to Gabrielle Giffords and those who were killed and injured at the same event is a terrible, unspeakable tragedy. But, it´s time for her husband to assist her off the stage. I thought the same thing about Jim and Sarah Brady. Their points were made, further PR is milking the awfulness to no purpose.
Mark, take care of your wife and stop parading her on stage If you wish to use her to promote d´rat agenda, do it elsewhere. This country is aware of what happened. Sorry it happened but the gun was not responsible for your wife and her injury. It was a thing used by a demented person such as yourself. If the gun had done this to your wife, absolutely no one would walk out of a gun show alive.
Giffords´ shooter was a mentally/emotionally unbalanced young male who was raised in a liberal democrat environment. Furthermore, his parents had refused to seek help from him after repeated warnings of his strange behavior from the local college he attended, as well as the Pima County Sheriff´s office.
Mark Kelly is a liar, and should be publicly ignored and shunned.
MORE LAW MORE LAWS MORE LAWS...until we have made the 2nd amendment nothing more than ink on paper. Thats when these festering pukes will be happy. Meanwhile each law creates more beurocracy causing more funidng more taxes...ahhahahahahahahhhhhhh
Illegal guns obtained by the criminal element in our nation come through the same pipeline as do illegal drugs. Liberals who think that criminals or people intent on creating havoc will somehow expose themselves by going through legitimate sources for the guns are the customers of the illicit drug trade. They have to be to be so stupid.Studies done interviewing current inhabitants of the Federal prison system clearly show that criminals get their guns via the black market or steal them. Less than 2% even try getting them through legal private sales or at gun shows. But as has always been the case concerning "Utopian world" Liberals, you simply can´t fix stupid!
Tories in the blue state are uninformed concerning private sells. In the majority of state there is no registration. Whoes going to know if you sell your used property?
Will the Post report the noncomplience with NY´s new semi auto registration?
The Fed already doesn´t charge those who lie on the 4473 forms. Why because it cost to much. Do you really think they will pour money into stopping private sells where you can´t prove who owns the gun?
Go ahead make us outlaws.
Guns are easy sells. No one is going to sell one to someone who seems not quite right. It´s not worth it. Private sells are more self regulated than legal sells.
The ignorant WaPoo readers sure make irritating comments at the end. I don´t have the time to deal with them today, but every time I tried to counter them, it seems 5 more came out of the woodwork. They are a creepy bunch of fools. All they do is make personal attacks against gun owners.
First of all, Kelly´s statement is an explicit admission that background checks don´t work because not all the crazies and criminals are in the database. Second, LaPierre´s claim that criminals won´t cooperate with background checks has nothing -- or very little -- to do with private sales. It means that criminals will get guns illegally no matter. Sure, some criminals probably get guns from otherwise legitimate private sales, but closing that "loophole" isn´t going to stop criminals from getting guns. Heck, they´ll probably resort to more burglaries. Thanks, lefties!
Mark Kelly is so concerned about his wife´s health that he gave up piloting that last shuttle mission so he could stay with her and continue to see to her needs. Oh wait, he did go on that mission. My bad. He´s the type of officer (Adm Mullens was another and Gen Dempsey is another) the US military can do without. The type that is in it for their personal glory and won´t speak up for the troops and doing the right thing. Unfortunately there are far too many of that type in the active duty force now. That´s why we need the 2nd Amendment. The military is being slowly conditioned to accept the idea that their fellow American citizens are the enemy. (I had a discussion with some active duty co-workers just this AM and they confirmed that they´ve been formally asked "if they´d ever fire on their fellow citizens").
Remember? Sheriff Clarence Dupnik rushed before the cameras and blamed Republican "vitriol" and images of a target in a Sarah Palin ad for the murders. That Jared Loughner was well known to authorities because of his ongoing bizarre behavior was of little interest to the left. Loughner lived in his own world, yet Democrats said he was acting out Republican hate.
Loughner´s nonsensical ramblings on the internet were minimized. Anti Second Amendment Democrats were determined to blame the murderous acts of an untreated paranoid schizophrenic on the Republican Party. They did not give a damn about mental illness at the time. Words and images from their opponents were blamed instead. It was a cheap and unscientific theory, yet the MSM gave Democrats a podium from which to launch POLITICAL attacks.
I caught the exchange between Senator Cruz and Maryland police chief Jim Johnson during my lunch break.
Senator Cruz asked Chief Johnson to try to explain why gun-control cities like Baltimore have significantly higher gun homicide rates.
The chief, who is also the Chair of the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence, replied that the difference is due to differences in health care! Clearly he thinks the doctors in Chicago and Baltimore cannot do as good a job with gunshot wounds as the doctors in Texas, or that the hospitals in his own city and Chicago cannot treat gunshot wounds as effectively.
Since his statement was accepted with no response or reaction, I wondered if I heard right. I´m afraid I did hear right, but am most willing to be corrected!
I guess it´s too much to expect Wayne LaPierre to shove the fact that the local sheriff had more than enough evidence and warnings to bring in the shooter, but HE DID NOTHING. Same with the hundreds of Chicago gun murders, Dick. The democrats in that city simply DON´T prosecute criminals who use guns in crimes. It´s almost like the WP and Dick D. use the lax enforcement of thousands of gun laws to grab more power over citizens instead of doing something about criminals.
1. They really have no idea how many guns there are in this country. They will never stop private sales, let alone generational transfers. Just ask yourself what people will do when the police arrive and ask for your grandfather´s hunting rifle. They sure won´t be turning them over quietly.
2. The media hypes crime while the rates drop and yet the wonder why more people want guns? They push fear and then expect us to give up our guns? They are losing this battle badly and they can´t understand it. 2014 should be an eye opener for some Dems.
Yea, right. LaPierre suggests armed security at our schools. 0bama sends his girls to a private school that has many armed guards, with real guns, and real bullets. So why is this not a good idea for the rest of the children? Give me a break.
Sears stock plummeted Wednesday as news came out that Edward Lampert, its stubborn billionaire chairman and CEO, had to surrender majority control of the 120-year-old big box retailer when investors in Lampert’s hedge fund pulled money out. With no end in sight for Lampert’s quixotic turnaround efforts, it’s time to question whether there’s any way to save Sears as long as he remains in charge. (Snip) Lampert began at Sears with the ill-fated $12 billion merger with Kmart in 2005. Sales have declined for 27 straight quarters and the company’s stock is down over 70% from its high in 2007.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has no system in place to prevent fraud when individuals apply for tax credits under Obamacare, according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). The IG said in an audit released Tuesday that the IRS has no plan to manage, monitor, or mitigate fraud risk when processing premium tax credits available under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). “The ACA Program has not yet completed a fraud mitigation strategy,” the audit found. “It is important for the IRS to thoroughly consider fraud threats and risks that could impact new ACA systems.” Politico reports: The
Around 100,000 Americans successfully signed up for health insurance in November through the troubled federal online marketplace, HealthCare.gov, a person familiar with the preliminary data confirmed to ABC News. The figure reflects a surge in enrollment as software and hardware fixes to the site were made over the course of the month. In October, only 26,000 people could successfully enroll in Obamacare plans, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. "We´ve been working 24/7 to make improvements, and more consumers are successfully shopping online and enrolling in a health plan each week," Health and Human Services Secretary
NEW HAVEN >> The jail cell death last weekend of Yale University professor Samuel See, known as a brilliant writer and rising star in academia, has shaken up the tight-knit college community. Now adding to the mystery of his unexpected death are apparent connections between the online profiles of See and several escort service websites that include a cache of sexually explicit photos. At least four websites advertising male escort services included a phone number connected to See. The website Ryan Cochran Escort Services includes the same phone number listed on an order of protection filed against See in September.
For many Ann Arborites, Thanksgiving is a day devoted to giving thanks, spending time with family, eating turkey and watching the Detroit Lions. This year, retail giants want that to change. (Snip) The early openings change the game for retail giants looking to boost profits through aggressive holiday sales. It also means millions of retail employees in the U.S. are working on the holiday, and it poses the question to consumers: Is a bargain on a 70-inch television or an Apple iPad worth ditching Thanksgiving dinner? “You couldn’t pay me to stand in a line in the cold on Thanksgiving
Macy´s Inc and a slew of other U.S. retailers are opening on Thanksgiving for the first time ever in a bare-knuckled brawl for a bigger slice of overall holiday sales. But it might not be so easy to lure most Americans from their turkey and football - particularly if the weather is foul. Department store rivals Kohl´s Corp and J.C. Penney Co Inc led a string of Thanksgiving opening announcements after Macy´s said it would open its U.S. stores on the popular holiday, ending a 155-year tradition. Sales trends, survey results and an online "Save Thanksgiving" backlash suggest that shoppers
The captain of a Greenpeace ship released on bail after two months of detention in a Russian prison following an Arctic protest said he and his fellow activists remain in shock at their treatment. American Peter Willcox, who was also in charge of Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warrior when it was sunk in Auckland in 1985 by a bomb planted by the French intelligence service, said the organization again found itself in the crosshairs of a government bent on throttling the environmental group. “There is a similarity between the two cases,” with both the French and Russian governments targeting Greenpeace to prevent
I have never been much of a conspiracy theorist. For me it was always Oswald by himself from the Texas School Book Depository and nothing in the intervening fifty years has disabused me of this notion. For the most part, I’m an Occam’s Razor kind of guy — the most obvious explanation is likely to be true. (Snip) To put it bluntly, Occam’s Razor has moved. Things that were once possibilities now seem almost certainties to me. Principal among those is that Obama’s academic records are perpetually unavailable for a reason — and that reason is most likely that they reveal
One of President Obama´s chief political assets has been his ability to excite young people like almost no politician in history. But the days of America´s youth fawning over the president are over. A new Harvard University Institute of Politics poll released Wednesday confirms what other surveys have shown in recent months: Millennials have soured on Obama so much this year that their opinion of him largely mirrors the American public´s. Even though Obama does not ever have to face another election, he should be worried about the findings for a couple of reasons, which we will dive into momentarily.
A stunning new study unveiled on Fox News´ Hannity finds that President Barack Obama’s White House calendar records just one face-to-face meeting between Obama and his Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in the more than three-and-a-half years leading up to the disastrous Obamacare launch. The startling statistic comes from a new Government Accountability Institute (GAI) analysis of Obama’s own official White House calendar, as well as the Politico presidential calendar, and raises new questions about Obama’s executive leadership and management throughout the implementation of his singular legislative achievement. More alarming still, the president’s schedule lists 277 private
[Video] President Obama on Wednesday declared that addressing income inequality would be the focus of “all” of the White House’s efforts “for the rest of my presidency.” In a sweeping address that touched on raising the minimum wage, investing in infrastructure and ending tax breaks for the wealthy, Obama warned that the American economy has become “profoundly unequal,” declaring economic mobility the “challenge of our time.” “The combined trends of increasing inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe,” he said in an hour-long
Just over two weeks ago, MSNBC host Martin Bashir delivered a harsh piece of commentary that culminated in the suggestion that someone should “s-h-i-t” in former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin‘s (R-AK) mouth. Bashir offered an abject apology on his next broadcast, but a chorus of critics continued to demand action against the host. After a reported “vacation” for the host earlier this week, Bashir announced, Wednesday afternoon, that MSNBC and Martin Bashir are parting ways. Here’s the statement from Martin Bashir, via email: After making an on-air apology, I asked for permission to take some additional time out around the Thanksgiving holiday. Upon
Amid an array of “knock-out” attacks against a number of Jews in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, a city councilwoman pointed to the success of the Jewish community as triggering the aggression. Councilwoman-elect Laurie Cumbo emphasized that while she “admire[s] the Jewish community immensely” for its work ethic, black teens may see it differently. “While I personally regard this level of tenacity, I also recognize that for others, the accomplishments of the Jewish community triggers feelings of resentment, and a sense that Jewish success is not also their success,” Cumbo, who was recently elected, wrote in a letter. Chief among the issues
America is facing a wave of strikes by its fast-food workers on Thursday a day after Barack Obama warned that inequality in the USA had soared to the point that it now posed "a fundamental threat to the American dream". Low-paid workers in McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and other fast-food outlets in 100 cities across America were due to start rolling strikes to protest at the low level of America´s $7.25 (£4.45) federal minimum wage. The strikes are the latest part of a mushrooming publicity campaign for higher wages among those working so-called "McJobs", with fast-food restaurants seen as a
