Immigration reform: a bid to attract
workers who will boost the economy

As a bipartisan group of US senators and President Obama lead a push to enact sweeping immigration reform this year, they are boosting the idea with a rationale that is economic as well as social. Reform isn’t just about reuniting families, better securing the border, or dealing pragmatically with immigrants who have been in the country for years but lack legal status, they say. It’s also, importantly, about helping the US economy continue to prosper in the years ahead. It’s an argument that many economists support. In fact, some policy experts say that welcoming more immigrants with advanced degrees

Comments:
As if there isn´t already 10 million people unemployed, and another 10 million underemployed. And the people flooding into the country are not exactly rocket scientists and biochemical engineers.

Yep!

Nothing will supercharge the economy like another 10 to 20 million uneducated, unskilled, half starved, disease ridden foreigners who can´t speak English and breed like rabbits.

For the last few years, I´ve been reading that the illegal immigrants were doing the jobs that Americans won´t do? I just googled "immigrants jobs Americans won´t do" and got more than 119 million hits.

Now they want foreigners to compete for jobs that Americans can do, as if there wasn´t enough competition for those jobs already?

Next, I suppose that employers will be given tax credits for hiring an immigrant! /s

How stupid is this argument? An ever expanding labor force is squeezing the American worker. Same with the loose money policies of the FED. Workers have no disposable incomes, and that is the problem. Illegal workers send all of their earnings back to Mexico, via Bank of Amigo. They suck cash out of this economy and they keep wages artificially low.

Yeah, because we´re just swimming in jobs here. How is this even being discussed when our people are out of work and Obama´s laser focus on jobs has gone a bit dim lately. Better put Joe Friday Biden on the case.

Reply 5 - Posted by: Eheu Fugaces, 1/30/2013 10:13:53 AM     (No. 9148282)

The problem is, most of our illegal immigrants don´t have advanced degrees. They do serve to keep wages in non-white-collar fields depressed, and they put a huge burden on our medical system by walking away from their medical bills. What they pay in sales taxes doesn´t quite cover it.

"Selling off" our assets of Constitutional liberty, sovereignty, and (t.b.d.) physical property to prop up an unsustainable spending pattern - that´s what it´s all about. Devaluing our citizenship, independence, and our dollar. Short-term stimulus (if that); long-term bankruptcy on several fronts. What they´re (not "we" - they) doing to our children and grandchildren is simply immoral.

"Now, my friends. I´ll offer anybody here $50.00 an hour if you´ll pick lettuce in Yuma this season and pick for the whole season. So...OK? Sign up. OK?"

#5, see H1-B visas for info on how foreign high-tech and hard science workers can come, legally, to the US and work for less than their American counterparts (not just code jockeys, also doctors, engineers, math professors, etc.).

Bill Gates is one of the most vocal of those pushing for MORE of these visas. Last time I checked I think the number of H1-B visas was around 60,000 annually.

Common sense will tell you that flooding the country with what amounts to a glut of cheap foreign labor is going to hold down US wages big time, and the people who are going to suffer from such activity are US workers who are trying to maintain their customary US standard of living.

# 8, care to comment on the fees involved in that visa, or the waiting time?

We have a better count of the bottles of Mexican beer that come into this country, never mind the numer of people who come in from Mexico.

The same for Chinese goods, vs. Chinese people.

EVEN IF Obie agrees to the enforcement provisions in the new bill, he will NEVER implement them.

Are you people FOOLS or just STUPID?

This is such bunk and propaganda.

I live in a sea of shades of brown taking jobs from America citizens. Many work for cash and no way will they come forward unless it moves them to the front of the food stamp line. They won´t pay taxes, like the their family that employs them.

What about the highly educated here that can´t find jobs and still losing their homes and cars or apartments ? Remember the woman who told Zippy her husband was an engineer and would he help her husband find a job ?

How many part time jobs that seniors used to get like baggers at the supermarket have gone to immigrants? A friend that moved to Key West said Haitians that can´t speak English took those jobs and more.

As far as the agricultural jobs, they are told it is beneath them, so your tax dollars pay for anyone who worked in ag for ten minutes to go to school and get paid a stipen for going.

Our nightly news is filled with crime by immigrants.

Only those that live in gated communities or politicians that don´t live in the Sun Belt believe this BeeS.

Americans in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll sharply reject special scrutiny of conservative groups by the Internal Revenue Service, suspect an administration cover-up of the Benghazi incident and express substantial distrust of the federal government more generally. (Snip) Longer-term impacts of contentious current issues remain to be seen, but there´s potential for significant damage to the administration. Americans by a vast 74-20 percent see the IRS´ behavior as inappropriate, with most feeling that way strongly - and 56 percent see it as a deliberate attempt to harass conservative organizations, not a mere administrative error.

A massive tornado ripped through Moore, Okla., Monday afternoon, leveling a huge swath of a residential area in the suburb of Oklahoma City. Video footage from KFOR-TV showed houses, businesses and at least two schools completely demolished, with cars strewn about. Police and emergency crews have begun to respond, but debris has clogged roadways. There is no tally yet on injuries or deaths, but news anchors said significant casualties are expected. At least one large fire has broken out amid the rubble. The twister is already being compared to the May 3, 1999 storm that ripped through Moore

LOS ANGELES - More poor people live in the nation´s suburbs than in urban cities because of affordable housing, service-sector jobs and the increased use of housing vouchers, according to a study released Monday. The number of those in poverty living in suburbs jumped 67 percent between 2000 and 2011, a much larger increase than in cities, researchers for the Brookings Institution said. Suburbs, however, still have a smaller percentage of the poor than cities do. The report notes that poor people were pulled to the suburbs by more affordable homes and followed jobs that were often low paying.

LOS ANGELES -- flocking to Southern California beaches are used to feeding the meter or paying a parking attendant. Not so along the less developed north coast where it´s customary to ditch cars on the shoulder of Highway 1 to surf, swim or picnic. That sandy line that long defined the state´s disparate beach culture may soon fade. In search of new revenue, the state parks system is eyeing parking fees for parts of the Northern California shoreline where none existed or considering hiking rates to visit popular beaches south of Los Angeles during peak periods.

CAIRO — The pale, young Christian woman sat handcuffed in the courtroom, accused of insulting Islam while teaching history of religions to fourth-graders. A team of Islamist lawyers with long beards sang in unison, "All except the Prophet Muhammad." (Snip) Blasphemy charges were not uncommon in Egypt under the now-ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak´s regime, but there has been a surge in such cases in recent months, according to rights activists. The trend is widely seen as a reflection of the growing power and confidence of Islamists, particularly the ultraconservative Salafis. "Salafis are the engineers of these stories,"

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.

U.S. Sen. John McCain bucked the party line coming from many of his fellow conservatives this morning, saying suggestions that compare the trio of scandals gripping the White House to Watergate are “overreaching.” “I think it’s overreaching. We need a full and complete investigation and then we will decide the dimensions of it,” said McCain while campaigning for Republican Senate candidate Gabriel Gomez in Dorchester. “It is terrible but we have to have a full investigation before we leap to conclusions.” The maverick’s caution is a sharp contrast to the response of many Republicans
