Take the morning off because of
icy pavements: the flabby world
of US federal government

As regular readers will know--and the trolls will confirm--I am not exactly a "small government" conservative. I believe that Government has a role to play in a healthy society, and in investing and promoting what the market alone will not. That said, dealings with the US federal government here in Washington DC are enough to test the patience of an entire congregation of saints. Yesterday morning, my children’s school was closed until 11am--and all federal offices in DC shut ´til noon--because of what the Washington Post’s “Federal Eye” blog described as “the possibility of icy conditions for the morning commute”.

They think they´ve insulated themselves from the economic realities the private sector faces. Hard rain coming. Unfortunately we´re all going to get drenched due to their governmental malpractice. But hey, the Democrats had an election to win.

I won´t go to that website, but this guy is saying he´s a big government conservative? I say he´s closer to a lib.

My old man once remarked:

"Thank God we don´t get are money´s worth from the government."

My fear is that this is changing.

Yes Peter the government has a role to play...get the hell out of our lives and quit stealing our hard earned money to buy votes. Happy now?

Unlike the UK, where people are "subjects" to a Crown, our Governments (State and Federal) are strictly defined by its citizenry through Constitutions as the supreme law of the land. Anything more or less is illegal. The rules have been turned upside down in 75 years of unchecked liberalism and the concept of States´ Rights is almost a thing of the past, due to the inaction of the States to assert their Constitutionally granted power over the bloated, worthless Federal.

Please note that the first to close and last to open are the public schools. Whoops, I forgot—it´s for the children...

Isn´t this guy confusing federal with city government? I don´t think the federal government actually runs the DC schools, swimming pools, etc.

Surge protection plan will keep lights

A vast tract of the East Coast, from Washington DC to New York is in danger of being without power for up to two years, if a massive solar flare knocks out the power grid. With the Sun pushing out unusually large solar flares, capable of disrupting power supplies, a device is being proposed that would prevent more than 300 million Americans being left without power. House Republicans have proposed legislation to push the Government to provide surge protectors and grid-saving devices that would offer protection in case of a massive electromagnetic pulse from either a flare or nuclear weapon.

Michelle Obama and her daughters were joined by the President´s half-sister Auma on Tuesday as the group made a sombre tour of the Holocaust memorial in Berlin. The First Lady, Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11, bowed their heads and listened carefully to the words of a tour guide. Michelle looked lost in thought as she wandered through the vast site while Malia appeared deeply moved and reached out to touch the stones. The Obamas are in Germany for a two-day visit and while the President meets with leader Angela Merkel, his wife and daughters visited the Memorial to the

Afghanistan suspends talks

Afghanistan has suspended talks with the US to discuss the nature of US military presence after foreign troops withdraw in 2014. A spokesman for President Hamid Karzai said the decision was taken over "contradictions" in the US proposal of direct talks with the Taliban. Mr Karzai also ruled out talking to the Taliban until the peace process was "Afghan-led". Earlier, four US soldiers died in a Taliban attack at an Afghan air base. A spokesman for the Taliban said the militants had launched two rockets at Bagram airbase, the largest military base for US troops in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan: Watch what the Taliban
do, not what they say

You don´t need to know much about Afghanistan, the nature of extremist movements or world affairs in general to understand one important principle: Never mind what they say, what are they doing? So while last night the Afghan Taliban released a statement (carefully co-ordinated with the White House) expressing their commitment to finding a political solution to Afghanistan´s conflict, this morning we wake to news that they launched a mortar attack on Bagram air base last night, killing four Americans. [Snip] The problem is that the US is negotiating not from a position of strength but a position of weakness.

Whither the weather? As you may have heard, a conference of national forecasters assembled this week in Exeter: to discuss the future of the British climate, following the spate of harsher than expected winters, and unusually wet summers, since 2007. Already, commentators are asking if global warming is to blame. In particular, some are wondering if the direction of the Jet Stream is being altered by Arctic ice melt. Others are speculating that natural variations, such as the “Atlantic multi-decadal oscillation”, might be responsible for recent evolutions. However, most of this reportage has been second-hand. Unprecedentedly, I had direct access

Yesterday´s surprise announcement by President Barack Obama that America is to engage in direct talks with the Taliban is a welcome and long overdue development in the decade-long Afghan conflict. As I and others have argued for many years, there is no military solution to the Afghan conflict, even if the sustained military effort--which has so far cost in excess of 3,000 Nato lives--has been necessary to force the Taliban to the negotiating table. Without the relentless military pressure provided by American, British and other Nato forces these past few years, I very much doubt that the Taliban would

Would you be caught wearing

It might seem like the androgynous fashion trend taken too far, but a Chinese company’s new ‘hairy leg’ hosiery hopes to help women ward off unwanted male attention. A photograph posted to the Shanghai-based website ChinaSMACK shows a model from the waist down wearing the on-trend stockings. A caption below touts them as the perfect ´summertime anti-pervert´ device and ´essential for young girls going out’. It does not state where shoppers can find the garment and internet searches prove fruitless. The image of the tights has triggered hundreds of responses from amused and horrified viewers. ‘Damn, so disgusting!’ commented one.

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lied to the Senate when he said there was never a “stand down” order during the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, 2012. “What was fascinating is that he explained his lie to them,” Joe DiGenova, an attorney representing one of the whistleblowers, told CNSNews.com. “He actually said they were sent to Tripoli. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

As NewsBusters reported last week, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin called out vulgarian comedian Bill Maher for referring to her Down Syndrome son Trig as "retarded." On ABC´s The View Monday, co-host Barbara Walters astonishingly defended Maher saying, "I don´t think he intended it to be mean-spirited" (video follows with transcript and commentary): WHOOPI GOLDBERG: At a recent standup show in Las Vegas, comedian Bill Maher apparently called Sarah Palin’s five-year-old developmentally-challenged son Trig retarded. Jeb Bush says he’s not worried that his work toward comprehensive immigration reform and his ties to the GOP establishment will alienate conservatives and negatively impact a potential 2016 presidential campaign, referring to critics as “the chirpers.” “If I decide to run for office again, it will be based on what I believe, and it will be based on my record,” the former Florida governor said in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody. “And that record was one of solving problems completely from a conservative prospective.” Bush (R) pointed to his conservative

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

Marco Rubio. Paul Ryan. The IRS. Illegal immigration. And fraud to the tune of billions.. Now there’s a combustible mix. Let’s start with the IRS, illegal immigration and fraud. We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.
