| A quartet of conservative panelists looked at the challenges of being the minority party in a divided government during a Saturday afternoon panel at the National Review Institute Summit titled, “The Way Out of the Fiscal Mess.” “We actually know how to get out,” said Christopher DeMuth, a scholar at the Hudson Institute. He said long-term Medicare reforms as well as tax reform are needed to help the government escape the mounting fiscal crisis. “We know for certain America is not going to do that,” DeMuth said. DeMuth was joined on stage by Amity Shlaes,

It will eventually be resolved via a massive devaluation of the dollar. You will have to turn in more or less 1000 current dollars to get one New Dollar. Prices, certainly on a world basis will stay about the same. American people will be impoverished. It all could have been avoided, but it won´t be.

This is overly complicated. The solution to the Fiscal Mess is real economic growth. That means private sector growth. Government is not capable of creating growth but it can most definitely prevent it with permitting, burden, and uncertainty.
At any point in time there opportunities for those who can meet a market need, within a foreseen window of time, for a target price. A classic case is the delivery of natural gas to NY and New England. In 2008, it was clear that huge reserves of natural gas were available in the Marcellus shale formation under NY state. But state officials decided to initiate an update of Generic Environmental Impact Study in NY. Its now 5 years later and no permits have issued and GEIS is still going through reviews. The permit time in TX is running 4 business days and oil comes with the gas. The burden is the sum of the secondary requirements that must be met to operate. That may range from new environmental equipment, new fuel efficiency standards, or higher taxes. The uncertainty is the real killer. You simply don´t know how long the status quo will remain in place. In fact, there may be no time because some permits have been yanked after they had been approved.
This system is insane and is killing growth.

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie today released another ad attacking his likely challenger, state Sen. Barbara Buono, hours after she began airing her first television commercial of the election. The Republican governor´s ad tries to link Buono to former Gov. Jon Corzine. She was Senate budget chairwoman during Corzine´s administration. “As the architect of Jon Corzine’s budgets, Barbara Buono was central to those disastrous policies that brought New Jersey to the brink of catastrophe,"

Former Democratic National Committee spokesperson and future MSNBC weekend host Karen Finney scolded a reporter who on Now this afternoon suggested that the White House may have overestimated how effective claiming that Republicans investigating a series of scandals were on a witch-hunt would be. In return, she asked if the GOP was genuinely concerned about the Obama administration’s scandals including the IRS’s targeting of right-leaning groups, then why didn’t Mitt Romney bring the issue up during the campaign? “One thing that we’ve seen over the last couple days is the degree to which the White House seems to

Tempers flared in a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing Wednesday, with members on both sides of the aisle castigating the Internal Revenue Service for targeting conservative groups with special scrutiny, and then hiding the practice from Congress. Rep. Darrel Issa, the committee´s chairman, said that the committee learned just yesterday that the IRS completed its own investigation a year before a Treasury Department Inspector General report was completed. But despite the IRS recognizing in May 2012 that its employees were treating right-wing groups differently from other organizations, Issa said, IRS personnel withheld those conclusions from legislators.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) honed in on evasive answers by former IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman at the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing into the IRS scandal Wednesday. Shulman refused to answer "yes" or "no" when Gowdy asked him whether he had taken any action to investigate or stop the targeting of conservative groups when he was made aware of it in May 2012. Instead of answering, Shulman claimed that he had been satisfied that the Inspector General was investigating, and said that he had merely been following practices left in place by his predecessor at the IRS.

NPR´s Ari Shapiro posted an interesting Tweet on May 21. He discovered that a cadre of well-known lefty columnists and journalists visited the White House together, three of whom he mentioned by name. Shapiro reported that Jonathan Capehart and Ezra Klein of the Washington Post, and Josh Marshall of the left-wing website TalkingPointsMemo.com were attending a meeting together at the White House. [Tweet] Coffee, Carney, or perhaps some "guidance"? Naturally the tongues on Twitter wagged. Instapundit wondered, for instance, if the "Journ-O-List cavalry" had been called out to solve Obama´s media problem.

Republican South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy admitted that he is stumped by why the media has taken so long to start paying attention to the Benghazi terror attack. “I can tell you this, in my district I’m asked about Benghazi much more than any other issue. I mean, from Costco to Wal-Mart to the church, Benghazi is the number one issue I’m asked about,” he said. “And I think I’m asked about it because it kind of involves what we believe about our republic, which is that we’re not gonna send anybody into harms way, under our flag without

J. Russell George paused for just a moment before he took his seat at the witness table. He wanted to take it all in. The Treasury inspector general whose audit of the IRS had set off a national firestorm had been in this very room before—three decades earlier. That was back when George was a precocious teenager who had worked his way onto the staff of then-Sen. Bob Dole, the powerful Republican chairman of the vaunted Finance Committee. Then, he’d sorted mail and made carbon copies. Now, he was about to testify before the same panel, to present the findings

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.
