Mourning the Filibuster’s Survival

They might not realize it yet, but President Obama’s liberal supporters have had a rough week. On Monday, they watched and cheered as their triumphant leader outlined a boldly progressive vision for the country, hitting all the high points: climate change, gay rights, equal pay, immigration reform, entitlement denialism, and “peace in our time.” But whatever hopes they may have had for realizing that vision suffered a serious blow yesterday. It happened the moment Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) scrapped his plans to “nuke” the filibuster. Eliminating the filibuster would have

I suspect Dingy has been hearing a lot from his string pullers who don´t like the landscape right now. He is not about to endanger his own position to help Obama destroy things. Dems are very fond of the status quo.

The question to ask is, what did the repubs agree to during the "negotiations"? The RINOs scare me as much as the dems.

I wonder if dingy Harry has some insight into Mr. O´s mind. Perhaps Mr. O. not only wants to destroy the Republican Party, but he would also be willing to sacrifice the Demonrat Party and pave the way for the O. brand party of communism. This way, dingy maintains some control over the Obama agenda.

# 2 McConnell was victorious.
Reid had a 10 vote majority in the Senate ( 55-45 )
and he caved , which makes it easier for Republicans to block Barry´s agenda.
This was a big win for our side.
And it´s why the left is outraged .
They want Reid removed.
FTA- “Gutting the filibuster was the top priority
and the first test of muscle for the vaunted liberal juggernaut heading into Obama’s second term,”
the aide says.
“The fact that it completely fizzled
not only explains the hysteria we’re seeing on the left, it should boost the spirits of conservatives looking for signs of hope after Obama’s inaugural.”

From the heart. This site is so greatly appreciated. With the lies and double talk coming from our ´betters´ in DC to have an interpreter is absolutely necessary. Alternate roads to travel and pathways to ponder as we attempt to reach the scenario outcome. Thank you for the insight

Obama is demonizing all of congress, the same way he does the GOP & the Tea Party. I´d like to credit Reid with the altruistic motive to save the 3 branches but I tend to feel his self survival instinct kicked in... unlike the MSM, Reid doesn´t want to sit by his fax machine for his daily orders from the WH.

Reply 7 - Posted by: oh-heck, 1/25/2013 11:40:07 PM     (No. 9139862)

The whining and moaning from liberals is disgraceful. They had a filibuster proof majority and fought so much among themselves that they failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage. If the laws they were attempting to pass weren´t so contrary to America´s principles, they wouldn´t have a problem getting 5 GOP votes.

The Democrat Senators are protecting themselves, as if they had removed the filibuster rule and the progressives had passed all their bills, chances are a lot of those bills passed on a party line vote by Democrats would be heavily opposed across the nation outside liberal circles causing the Democrats severe political blow back before the 2014 election when the Democrats must defend 20 Senate seats.

Besides if the Democrats had passed all their bills, what reason they have to keep attacking the Republicans? Then what would the Democrats do if the Republicans take control of the Senate and no longer have to get 60 votes to pass their bills?

There was too much future political risk for the Democrats to make extreme and ill advised rule changes in the Senate for partisan political purposes.

A Fifth of Obama

You can always rely on the administration of Barack Obama, a former constitutional-law lecturer (or as his résumé-inflating fans put it, “professor”), to do the sleazy thing when it comes to the Constitution the president is sworn to defend. Thus, the performance on Wednesday of Lois Lerner, chief of the Obama IRS’s Conservative Harassment Division, before the House oversight committee. There’s an old scam criminal defendants occasionally pull. They give a bit of exculpatory direct testimony – just enough to gaze plaintively at the jurors and swear, cross-their-hearts, that they are pure as the driven snow. Then

The woman at the center of the IRS scandal refused to testify to Congress on Wednesday, but House Republicans said Lois Lerner botched her attempt to invoke her right against self-incrimination and said they likely will force her to come back and explain why the agency targeted conservative political groups. Ms. Lerner’s refusal to testify shifted attention to her onetime boss, former Commissioner Douglas H. Shulman, who apologized to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee but refused to take responsibility, leaving furious lawmakers warning that the Internal Revenue Service could end up facing a special prosecutor.

Early in an opinion issued recently by a unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, Judge A. Raymond Randolphsaid: “Although the parties have not raised it, one issue needs to be resolved before we turn to the merits of the case.” The issue he raised but could not resolve — that is up to the Supreme Court — illuminates the Obama administration’s George Wallace-like lawlessness. It also demonstrates the judiciary’s duty to restrain presidents who forget the oath they swear to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.” The appeals court was deciding

Revelations about the Internal Revenue Service targeting conservative groups have raised important questions about the Obama administration’s commitment to the First Amendment. Yet there is ample evidence to suggest that the culture of intimidation in which these tactics were allowed to flourish goes well beyond one agency or a few rogue employees. For years, administration officials have used the power of the federal government to isolate their opponents. Meanwhile, the unionized employees who populate the IRS and other agencies across the country routinely take their cues from union bosses, whose political donations and speeches show their support

As soon as White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler heard about an upcoming inspector general’s report on the Internal Revenue Service, she knew she had a problem. The notice Ruemmler saw on April 24 gave her a thumbnail sketch of a disturbing finding: that the IRS had improperly targeted tea party and other conservative groups. She shared the news with White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough and other senior White House aides, who all recognized the danger of the findings. But they agreed that it would be best not to share it with President Obama until

CHICAGO — Religiously devout business owners are waging a broad rebellion against providing their employees with contraceptive coverage, bringing dozens of lawsuits that seem certain to land the issue before the Supreme Court. The company owners say their religious beliefs take precedence over a new federal requirement, contained in President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, that they give employees insurance that covers contraceptives. The legal battle took an important step forward Wednesday when an appeals court here heard arguments in two cases brought by business owners who are Catholic. Another challenge is scheduled to be heard Thursday by an appeals court

A Chechen man linked to one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects was fatally shot early Wednesday in an unusual encounter with the FBI and other law enforcement officers in his apartment in Orlando. According to federal law enforcement officials, the man was being interviewed about whether he and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the bombing suspects, were connected to a two-year-old triple slaying when he attacked an FBI agent. There were conflicting accounts of what happened in the moments before the man was shot. One federal law enforcement official said the man, a professional martial-arts fighter, was shot

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.
