| Police in one Iowa city could soon be buying their own assault rifles to carry in squad cars to ensure they aren´t outgunned by criminals in the wake of several high-profile shootings involving semi-automatic AR-15s, FoxNews.com has learned. Half of the 50-member force in Marion, Iowa, will take part in the upgrade, paying for the $2,000 guns in installments deducted from their paychecks, according to Police Chief Harry Daugherty. He said the proposal, expected to be approved by the city’s seven-member City Council late Thursday, will mean initial responders will have enough firepower to deal with heavily armed suspects.

And if the bad guys break in to my home before the police get there, I as a citizen will have a BB gun for defense?

Just what was the threat that faces this police department? Something happens in Colorado, or Texas is a direct threat to a small town in Iowa? I concur with the townsfolk that think this is a bit much.

I wish they would make up their minds whether the police in this town are going to get high powered assault rifles or AR-15s, since the AR-15 is neither high powered, nor an assault rifle. The AR-15 is merely a semi-automatic rifle that LOOKS similar to an assault rifle. However, that does not mean that this is not a good idea as my understanding is that the AR-15 has a high degree of accuracy in trained hands, at least compared to most pistols.

AR-15 patrol rifles have become fairly standard for police organizations across the country. Before this if a patrol officer had a long gun in his cruiser it was generally a 12 gauge shotgun. What´s unusual about the purchase is that apparently the town or city can´t fit them into their budget and the officers are buying them personally. While that´s not terribly unusual for sidearms, this arrangement is a little different than most.

#8 I agree 110%. In fairness, we should be allowed the same protection that our leaders have, and our so called protectors have. But it´s not about fairness, is it? Control.
I can hardly believe this is Iowa they´re talking about. I have never been there except driving through, but I have never considered Iowa as a place that would have such a problem with heavily armed criminals. Huh. Learn something new every day. I can imagine that LA cops would need Abrams tanks in comparison.

What a crock! Police officers should have SUPERIOR firepower when dealing with the bad guys. AR-15 are SEMI AUTOMATIC!!! Do you think the bad guys have semi firepower??? Heck NO you jerks! The bad guys will have FULLY AUTO weapons that will spray rounds ( that´s bullets to you politicians ) and in BIG quantities...that WILL overwhelm the cops puny response. Obviously the city heads could care less for the lives of their police officers because they don´t want them OVER powered with firepower. Cops should have FULLY AUTO M-16s, bulletproof vests with SWAT plates, and EVERY advantage to do their jobs with a GOOD degree of success. Their job is to STOP the bad guys NOT to be fair with them! You want fairness...DON´T be a bad guy!!!

I don´t know why the officers are buying AR-15´s with their own money. Their department should just get some surplus M-16´s and/or M-4´s from the DOD. That´s the real thing for free #12.

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
