Shaming fat people into losing

A leading health academic has called for fat people to be ´shamed and beat upon socially´ in order to halt the obesity crisis. In a controversial article, Daniel Callahan, the 82-year-old president emeritus of The Hastings Center a New York think-tank specializing in health policy ethics, calls for increased stigmatization of obese people to try spur weight-loss across America. The senior research scholar says fat people should be treated like smokers who have become increasingly demonized in recent years and thus ´nudged´ by negative attitudes of those around them into giving up the unhealthy

Comments:
Really? These obnoxious leftists are always the sole arbiters of who they choose to shame. What about unwed mothers, drug addicts, those who abuse welfare, etc. I thought leftists were so opposed to bullying.

Who knows anyone under, say, um, thirty-five who can be shamed to behave in any way?

The culture of being able to be successfully shamed was high-jacked by the libs years ago.

If it feels good, do it....

What EVER happened to live and let live?
There is way too much intrusion by people into other peoples´ lives.
How far do we take this idea of "shaming" people?
This USED to be a free country.

This country was a whole lot better off when people were ashamed of being on welfare, of having babies out of wedlock and of having abortions, among other things.

What a fool. Fat people are shamed and beat upon their entire lives, and all it does is make them turn to food even more.

So, does that mean no one can vote again for Gov Christie? Better shun him. Then, after shunning them does not work, how about sending all fat people to "Starvation Camps"- oh, and they will need plenty of exercise, So, "Starvation and Work Camps"- Oh, didn´t the Nazis have that one already figured out. Looking at the "after" pictures of Dachau and Treblinka, seems they ere successful. Better never underestimate liberals with power over you. They are capable of exceptionally horrible things.

This is another attack on INDIVIDUAL rights.
I have the right to smoke, I have the right to be fat, I have the right to be stupid.
I am none of the above, but I still believe any individual has the right to be what they want.
Beware!! Another example of grouping people into categories..which undermines individuality. The communist way.

Lots of sensitivity on this thread.

All I can say is, I think obese people ARE ashamed of themselves. It´s part of their problem to begin with.

There have always been fat people. It seems these days there are more than ever. It´s not because they´re not ashamed. I think it´s because there are more opportunities to become ashamed of oneself than ever before.

Being overweight is an entirely curable problem, if one considers it a problem. For most overweight people, the difficulties resulting, diabetes, back pain, public ridicule etc. are acceptable. Just as the rewards of smoking are worth the cost and consequence. Its a free country, and our excesses are supported by our health care system.

While I do not believe in any government intrusion, I agree with the smoker´s analogy. I am a very infrequent smoker, but if I do smoke, I have to go outside, while my friends are in the restaurant or store and then people look at me with disgust or roll their eyes. I live in No. Calif. where a smoker is considered comparable to a serial rapist, so the result is that I only smoke in situations where it is not shocking to other people, which is very rare.

I would also had that public scrutiny and shame does have some merit. I grew up in So. Cal along the beach, and the pressure to be thin and in very good physical shape (pre-plastic surgery age) was very persuasive. Of course there is the consequences of bulimia and anorexia, but those medical stats do not compare anywhere to the stats of obesity.

Fat acceptance is so pervasive that there is an entire industry and lobby deeming it acceptable. Just see what it is like sitting in the middle chair on an overseas coach flight sandwiched between the likes of two Chris Christies. IMO totally unacceptable.

When gov´t "gives" you [forces you to take] "free" healthcare, this is just part of the price. And the lovely and gracious Michelle will [as a public service, don´tcha know] gladly hector you about every habit you have and choice you make -- 24/7/365. No, you don´t get a break on 2/29 when it´s Leap Year.

OP: But, "unwed mothers, drug addicts, those who abuse welfare" are victims of white oppression; that´s why. You know that.

#17: Ah! Thanks for pointing out the silver lining. Like it.

As a health care provider, I can tell you that the only way to *make* change overweight/obese people into someone who weighs less is to invent a magic pill that makes you stop eating.

That, or lock people up until they reach their desired weight.

I have patients taking 25-30 medications and suffering greatly from hypertension, diabetes and all kinds of ailments. Shaming them will have no effect.

I quit smoking a year and a half ago and put on the predictable weight. It is not coming off easily and it doesn´t get easier as you get older. Yes, I know it´s an issue I have to deal with and I am trying to deal with it but I don´t intend on taking a lot of guff from anyone about my weight. I therefore vote for shaming know-it-all, presumptuous lefties who want to tell everyone how to live. And shaming should include the use of a baseball bat!

The revelation that the government’s talking points in the wake of the Benghazi attacks were edited to reflect the concerns of a variety of federal agencies has sparked a firestorm of controversy in recent weeks. Some early reports on that email exchange created the erroneous impression that the White House was more deferential to the concerns of State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, who sought to remove from those talking points a variety of references suggesting the Benghazi attack was the result of a coordinated act of terror. The actual interagency email exchange, released by the Obama administration on Wednesday,

DENVER — Colorado sheriffs upset with gun restrictions adopted in the aftermath of last year’s mass shootings filed a federal lawsuit Friday, challenging the regulations as unconstitutional. The lawsuit involves sheriffs from 54 of Colorado’s 64 counties, most representing rural, gun-friendly areas of the state. The sheriffs say the new state laws violate Second Amendment protections that guarantee the right to keep and bear arms. Opponents are criticizing the lawsuit as political maneuvering. The filing targets Colorado laws that limit the size of ammunition magazines and expand background checks. The regulations

WASHINGTON – Jay Devereaux hadn’t paid much attention to the daily drumbeat of partisan politics in D.C. He wasn’t a Washington nerd, and didn’t know who said what during congressional hearings -- nor did he care. But when news broke that the government was using taxpayer money to bail out Wall Street banks, he started paying attention and didn’t like what he was hearing. So the Florida father and information technology specialist decided to form a group, Unite in Action, to educate people in his area about the issues, he said.

WASHINGTON — Congressional Republicans, not resting with the Internal Revenue Service scandal, are moving to broaden the matter to an array of tax malfeasances and “intimidation tactics” they hope will ensnare the White House. Republican charges range from the clearly questionable to the seemingly specious, and they grow by the day. On Friday, lawmakers sought to tie the I.R.S. matter to the implementation of President Obama’s health care law, which will rely heavily on the agency. Whether they succeed holds significant ramifications for Mr. Obama,

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says it wants as many as 20 percent of its workers to "telework," use an "alternative work schedule," or do both, in order to "reduce green house gas emissions," decrease "employee stress," and give these government workers more time for "planning and preparing healthy meals." So says one of the HHS "performance measures" detailed in an appendix to the department´s latest strategic plan. HHS´s performance measure "4.D.05" says: "Increase the percent employees on telework or on Alternative Work Schedule." Telework means working from home via phone and computer.

What did President Obama do on the evening of 9/11/12 when our men were under attack in Benghazi? The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. In the wake of one of the worst abuses of government power in recent history, many are rushing to frame the Internal Revenue Service scandal as simply an attack on conservative activists. That view risks creating a partisan political football and misses a fundamentally scarier abuse that exceeds the scandals of Watergate or any other prior government abuse. The IRS has admitted that since May 2010 it targeted grassroots-conservative organizations that had applied for tax-exempt status, unfairly subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny due to their political leanings. Such groups were told they were required to comply with IRS requests,

"We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.
