| New York has yet to receive an estimated $30 billion from Washington for Hurricane Sandy relief, but Governor Andrew Cuomo already knows one way he plans to spend it. (Snip) “There are some parcels that Mother Nature owns,“ he said earlier this month in his official State of the State speech. “She may only visit once every few years, but she owns the parcel and when she comes to visit, she visits.” To deal with such intrusions, the governor wants to give homeowners in these areas a choice. New York will help them rebuild a better house — on stilts, for example, higher than future floodwaters.

Stilts? Your Hurricane Sandy relief [$B´s] to be spent on this waterlogged idea. Why not claim it destroyed by Mother Nature [Climate Change] and give them the carbon credits to move on? A win-win for the LIV.

This guy doesn´t understand squat. I guess his girlfriend thought this up. Does he think we will buy this? High waters are usually accompanied with high winds which will knock those little stilts down. My guess it is another money laundering operation to steal instead of real reform.

Actually in Louisiana a lot of houses are built on piers "stilts" high off the ground and they do stand up to hurricane force winds. The only problem I see with a raised hous is how do you keep the floors warm and the water pipes from freezing?

Funny.... I worked on a new school in the Rockaways say eight years ago.
It had ocean front property and all of the land on either side was vacant for many 100´s of yards.
But a brand new school was being built where I was.
The school had many design problems.
The first of which was that ocean ground water was finding it´s way into the basement.
Many pumps, many design changes, many delays and much extra money spent.
I asked why this school was being built here, in this particular spot, and the answer surprised me. (silly me)
The property belonged the CUOMO FAMILY was the answer.
Yeah... right down there where Andy-Boy Cuomo wants nobody else to build anymore.
Funny ain´t it?

How many of the dispossessed are people living in housing projects built by the city or state? My understanding was that when the World Trade Center was built, some people got creative and used the fill to build up land that had previously flooded. Part of that land then went to housing projects. What say the locals? Did I get any of this right?

I am shocked to hear a hack like Cuomo, the prime engineer of sub-prime loans circa the 2008 collapse, make any sense at all, much less recognize nature´s predominance over political whim.

Stilts? No, just require the first floor to be a boat hull with 3 feet in the ground and 3 feet above ground. 4 anchor points at the lot corners. They are being built on a sand bar anyway. This way they could relocate the 3 feet or 30 feet after the storm.

“He was not radical at all,” Taramov told WESH-TV. He added that the FBI had been tracking Todashev since the Boston bombings. At some point, Todashev moved to Florida. He was arrested for aggravated battery this month, according to police records, after getting into a fight with a man in a parking lot. When the FBI agent and others arrived at his apartment early Wednesday, the law enforcement officials said Todashev initially was cooperative. They said he appeared on the verge of signing a confession to the killings of three people in Waltham in September 2011.

Jerusalem - Israel´s air force chief says his troops need to be ready to act quickly in case of an attack from Syria. The remarks by Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel Wednesday echo statements by Israel´s military chief of staff a day earlier. Eshel warned escalation could lead to a "surprise war." Dubai - Iranian authorities executed two men on Sunday convicted of working for Israeli and U.S. spy agencies, Iran’s Fars news agency reported. Mohammad Heidari, accused of passing security-related in formation and secrets to Israeli Mossad agents in exchange for money, and Kourosh Ahmadi, accused of gathering information for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, were hanged at dawn, it said. The sentence for their execution was handed down by Tehran’s Revolutionary Court and confirmed by the country’s Supreme Court. The report did not say when the pair were arrested nor when their trial took place.

One of two men allegedly being questioned in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings was shot and killed by an FBI agent in Florida on Tuesday, (Snip)A friend of Ibragim Todashev said he and Todashev were being investigated as part of the Boston bombings. He said Todashev, 27, knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because both were MMA fighters. The man claims he and Todashev were interviewed by the FBI for nearly three hours on Tuesday. The friend said he left the interview, and when he came back to the apartment he found that there had been a shooting.

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W.
