| Santa Ana Unified, the only Orange County school district with its own police force, says that certain officers are trained to use department-issued assault rifles, but none of the high-powered guns or other weapons is stored on campuses. (Snip) The Fontana Unified School District in the Inland Empire is storing 14 Colt 6940 rifles in locked safes on its campuses, to be used by the school district´s police department in the event of a campus attack, Superintendent Cali Olsen-Binks said this week.

So many contradictions in this article.... headline says "not on campus", yet the article says otherwise - twice.
Rifle program is two years´ old, but the rifles were ordered "last fall".
What I don´t get is the approach to this... the guns (supposedly) are stored on campus, but they appear to be use for LEOs only. Well unless the LEOs are right there on campus, they´re useless unless and until the LEOs can get to them in time.

And again - "high powered". Not compared to the average deer rifle. Not even considered adequately lage to hunt deer sized game in many states. Just more liberal (but false) buzzwords designed to influence the ignorant. Would the writer call his article "high-powered" speech? I wouldn´t.

It was reported earlier that the school districts do not keep the weapons on-campus. They are stored in locked safes at the local police departments. The officers who are authorized to use them, having gone through extensive training, check them out each day and check them back in at night.

OP, this school district in Orange County has had this program for two years.
Fontana (in Riverside County) just took delivery of its rifles a few months ago. An article elsewhere specified that those were not being stored on campus, but were at the police department where the campus police checked them out every morning and checked them back in at night.
There is a better article posted at LCom earlier today.

These modern style semiauto rifles are good choices for police to defend themselves, but are a bad idea for us peasants to have because we have no need for them and we are too dangerously out of control to be trusted with them. Of course, from a practical standpoint this is like storing fire extinguishers locked in a central warehouse. Stupid as heck.
The overlords and the peasants. See the differences developing. They have got to disarm the "great unwashed".
Exactly the opposite of the intent of the Second Amendment. George Washington called them our "liberty teeth".

DENVER - A group of Colorado sheriffs unhappy with recent gun control laws are planning to file a lawsuit to block them. The sheriffs have called a Friday morning news conference to detail their federal challenge. The lawmen said they would challenge two new laws, one limiting the size of ammunition magazines and another law to expand gun background checks. The laws were passed earlier this year in response to mass shootings in Aurora and at a school in Connecticut. Not all sheriffs opposed the bills, but some were frequent visitors to the state Capitol in an effort to prevent the gun controls.

Washington - Boston Mayor Tom Menino says information he has indicates that the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing acted alone. Menino tells ABC's "This Week" that he agreed with the decision to lock down Boston all day Friday, based on information officials had at the time. But their path to enacting gun curbs this year seems blocked by the National Rifle Association, and supporters of restrictions appear befuddled about what it will take to push legislation through this Congress. William Strickland waited for his grandfather to step out of his South Side home to take his paratransit ride to a kidney dialysis appointment early March 2, authorities said Saturday — then stood behind the 72-year-old man, shot him six times in the back and stole his wallet, leaving him to die just steps from his home. Prosecutors said Saturday that Strickland, 19, used the money he took from his grandfather, who also was named William Strickland, to pay for new gym shoes, a cellphone and tattoos. The teen had no criminal history but was an admitted gang member, they said.

The Second Amendment´s guarantee of a right to bear arms does not extend to the right to carry a concealed weapon in public, a federal appeals court in Denver has ruled. "We conclude that the carrying of concealed firearms is not protected by the Second Amendment . . ." Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement
