| FONTANA, Calif, - The semiautomatic rifles look like they belong in a war zone instead of a suburban public school, but officials in this Los Angeles-area city say the high-powered weapons now in the hands of school police could prevent a massacre. Fontana Unified School District police purchased 14 of the Colt LE6940 rifles last fall, and they were delivered the first week of December — a week before the Connecticut school shooting. Over the holiday break, the district´s 14 school police officers received 40 hours of training on the rifles.

Comments: Article reports that other Southern California school districts have been doing this for several years.

It´s a good idea to read the article. This is a pretty straightforward account of how some California school districts have handled placing firearms in the hands of campus law enforcement. How the programs work, where the weapons are stored (they are not stored on campus, but at the main police office - in a locked safe), how the officers are trained, how the weapons are checked to the officers, etc.
There is one part about concerns by parents and students about armed personnel on campus. But it is not emphasized and that is not the direction this article takes.
This illustrates how school districts HAVE been preparing for something they hope will never happen.

That´s Fontana. It was the same way when I went to Jr. High in the late 50´s. You had to learn to fight or run or both. The Hells Angels started in Fontana too.

You don´t hear reports of massacres inside inner city schools despite their being in the most dangerous, violent neighborhoods in the country. They have armed guards inside the schools. The kids may be SOL outside or they may get shanked or beaten or any other number of vicious assaults, but you don´t see the massacres that suburban kids are subjected to.

Nope. They do not need the sustained firepower etc. that these rifles are designed to provide. They need shotguns and maybe one bolt action .30-06.

It probably doesn´t even matter the effectiveness of the particular gun being used. Just the mere presence of having them will probably deter anyone from having to actually use one.

A ten year-old who can handle a .22 rimfire bolt-gun can handle an AR style platform instinctively. Note the ´high-power" buzzword designed to influence the ignorant. They are not considered large enough to humanely hunt deer in many states - used for varmints, coyotes and feral hogs mostly.
But they are safe at the police station - so they´ll never be of any use. in an event that calls for them all the victims will be gone before the first officer arrives at the station to "sign out" his Colt.
Don´t you feel ever so much safer now? /S

While giving the commencement address at the United States Coast Guard Academy, Vice President Joe Biden confused Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy with Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. This is a particular embarrassing mix-up for Biden, seeing as he recently worked closely with Malloy on gun reform measures.

New Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz doesn’t want to spend his tenure battling over climate science. “Let me make it very clear that there is no ambiguity in terms of the scientific basis calling for a prudent response on climate change,” Moniz told Energy Department employees shortly after his swearing-in. “I am not interested in debating what is not debatable,” Moniz said in his remarks at the Tuesday ceremony. “There is plenty to debate as we try and move forward on our climate agenda.”

Among the criteria by which the Internal Revenue Service selected groups in for its political targeting program in 2012 was "educating on the constitution and bill of rights" (lowercase in original), according to the Inspector General´s Report. Lois Lerner, who directs the office at the center of that effort, has received her own education in the Constitution.(Snip)Josh Marshall, proprietor of TalkingPointsMemo.com, concedes that Lerner "has every right" to invoke the Fifth Amendment "and may be wise to do so. But that´s a decision that simply is not consistent with her remaining in her job.

CINCINNATI, OH - The claim that the ongoing IRS scandal is limited to low level employees is falling apart. The six Cincinnati workers we have identified, who sent scrutinizing letters to conservative groups with words including "patriot, liberty, tea party or 9-12" in their names are Mitchel Steele, Carly Young, Joseph Herr, Stephen Seok, Liz Hofacre and a woman identified only as Ms. Richards. (Snip) Because all six of our IRS workers have different individual and territory managers, Cindy Thomas is one manager they all have common.

We can now officially call the Obama administration besieged. One of President Obama´s underlings is set to plead her Fifth Amendment Right against self-incrimination in the burgeoning IRS scandal. The Los Angeles Times broke the story: Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won´t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening - or why she didn´t disclose it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor III. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday.

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. She was determined to

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. What was a DHS agent doing at the San Jose Tea Party protest? (snip) they weren´t just spying on us in San Jose and monitoring us in San Francisco, they were watching us throughout the entire state
