This British Assault on an
Island Off Argentina Is for the Birds

Wall Street Journal, by Cassell Bryan-Low

LITTLE DOWNHAM, U.K.—Britain is dispatching a band of skilled killers to an island off the Argentine coast on a boat carrying a lethal arsenal. No, not to repeat the Falklands War. This time, it is to attack a problem that has been brewing in a remote British overseas territory for more than 200 years: rampaging rats. Specialists from the U.K. are calling it the world´s biggest rat cull. The location is the glacial island of South Georgia in the Atlantic, about 1,200 miles east of the tip of South America. The problem: the island is overrun with the rats

Comments:
I read a novel a couple of years ago about a similar effort on the islands off the coast of California.

Good one #2! New Zealand is having a problem with their cat population eating birds according to a rich wacko bird lover named Morgan. He conveniently forgets that cats help control the rodent infestations that breed disease in humans.

But, he (Martin)says, he doesn´t underestimate his enemy. If you don´t respect the rats, "you´re in trouble. They will outthink you."

He is talking about the animal here, right?

‘Every Praise’: Kidnapper Releases
10-Year-Old Who Won’t Stop
Singing Gospel Song

A gospel song saved a 10-year-old Atlanta boy from his kidnapper. Willie Myrick said he was in his front yard and bent down to pick up money when somebody grabbed him and threw him in a car. “He told me he didn’t want to hear a word from me,” Myrick said. That’s when Myrick began to sing a gospel song called “Every Praise.” The kidnapper started cursing and repeatedly told Myrick to shut up, but he wouldn’t. He sang the song for about three hours until the kidnapper let him out of the car. The little boy ran to a

Though dinosaur-killing impacts are rare, large asteroids routinely hit the Earth. In the visualization above, you can see the location of 26 space rocks that slammed into our planet between 2000 and 2013, each releasing energy equivalent to that of some of our most powerful nuclear weapons. The video comes from the B612 Foundation, an organization that wants to build and launch a telescope that would spot civilization-ending asteroids to give humans a heads up in trying to deflect them. To figure out where asteroids were hitting our planet, B612 used data from a worldwide network of instruments that detect

Torquemada has landed in America. This nation of free and open inquiry has been seized by totalitarians who refuse to entertain other points of view. The debate about global warming is over say adherents of this position. When, if ever, has the debate about any scientific issue been over? That is the least of it. So complete is the feminist assault on the culture that one can no longer say men and woman aren’t interchangeable. Should a military officer challenge the faith, he can be sure promotion is not in his future. Common sense is in retreat before the gods of

Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy hailed

Rancher Cliven Bundy’s standoff with the Bureau of Land Management has prompted a national debate over whether the elderly Nevada cattleman is a patriotic freedom fighter or a lawless renegade. Mr. Bundy owes more than $1 million in back grazing fees, but he contends that the federal government’s rules are increasingly rigged against Westerners who have long made their living off the public lands. The debate stood in sharp relief this week as conservative commentator Pat Buchanan criticized the BLM for overreacting to an “unpaid bill” while a liberal activist announced that he’s planning to hold a 30-day, rules-free “Bundyfest”

Jihadists Now Control

A camp on the Libyan coastline meant to train terror-hunters has instead become a haven for terrorists and al Qaeda. A key jihadist leader and longtime member of al Qaeda has taken control of a secretive training facility set up by U.S. special operations forces on the Libyan coastline to help hunt down Islamic militants, according to local media reports, Jihadist web forums, and U.S. officials. In the summer of 2012, American Green Berets began refurbishing a Libyan military base 27 kilometers west of Tripoli in order to hone the skills of Libya’s first Western-trained special operations counter-terrorism fighters. A joke is making the rounds among Vladimir Putin’s opponents in Moscow: His two main accomplishments as Russia´s president are Yuri Gagarin’s trip to space and Russia’s victory in World War II. This biting bit of sarcasm, which takes a swing at Pupin´s populist rhetoric, actually gets at something much deeper. It reflects Putin’s vision of the country’s development as well as the style in which he communicates with his citizens and the international community. And yet, though people in Russia understand him, those in the West do not. In December 2012, Putin delivered his annual address to the Russian Federal

Just three months after Rep. Trey Radel resigned his safe Republican seat in southwest Florida, Republican voters have chosen his likely successor: Curt Clawson. He won the election the old-fashioned way, by making a ton of money in the private sector and then splattering the airwaves with TV ads. In the process, Clawson rolled up endorsements from local Tea Party leaders and from the Tea Party Express. It wasn´t that he was particularly conservative -- he had no prior political record, and had even donated to Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow. It was enough, according to the Tea Party Express, that he

The Citizens Commission on Benghazi, a self-selected group of former top military officers, CIA insiders and think-tankers, declared Tuesday in Washington that a seven-month review of the deadly 2012 terrorist attack has determined that it could have been prevented – if the U.S. hadn´t been helping to arm al-Qaeda militias throughout Libya a year earlier. ´The United States switched sides in the war on terror with what we did in Libya, knowingly facilitating the provision of weapons to known al-Qaeda militias and figures,´ Clare Lopez, a member of the commission and a former CIA officer, told MailOnline. Public Trust: Sixty-one percent polled say President Obama lies "some of the time" or "most of the time" on matters of national importance. Americans have to ask: Why do we let him get away with it? It´s no surprise that a Fox News poll of 1,012 registered voters last week found immense distrust of a president whose main domestic initiative was based on a lie. The shock is that the same poll found his disapproval level down to its lowest since last fall. Asked, "How often do you think Barack Obama lies to the country on important matters?" 37% replied "most of

The Obama administration is poised to entertain a flood of new clemency applications from thousands of federal prisoners who were given harsh sentences under mandatory-minimum laws following drug convictions, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday. Holder said in a short videotaped statement that he wants to shrink the federal prison population by a modest amount while ensuring ´that those who have paid their debts have a chance to become productive citizens.´ At the center of the move is a set of old sentencing rules that punished crack-cocaine offenders with more time behind bars than users or traffickers of powder cocaine.

Former Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) said a number of junior GOP senators considering a presidential run in 2016 do not yet have the experience — specifically naming Rand Paul (Ky.), Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas). The former 1996 GOP presidential candidate sounded particularly skeptical of Cruz in an interview this week with The Wichita Eagle. "A number of the younger members, first-termers like Rand Paul, Rubio and that extreme-right-wing guy, Ted Cruz — all running for president now. I don´t think they´ve got enough experience yet," Dole said. The 90-year-old former senator said, however, his main concern about 2016 is living

If Jeb reaches for the nomination, there will be a titanic battle between the party establishment and the Tea Party. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s strategist in 2008, insists that in the end Republicans usually settle on the most electable candidate. To get by, this Bush may be forced to trim his positions, although the cautionary tale of Romney suggests that he would have to tack artfully and carefully for the sake of the general election. Certainly he will have the resources to outlast, discredit, and disqualify his rivals.

Washington - Michelle Obama said "splurging is the key to life" if you regularly eat right and stay active. Her biggest guilty pleasure: French fries. "How would you appreciate vegetables if you never had chocolate?" she asked. "You couldn´t live without a little chocolate, a little French fries." The first lady took questions from children reporters Monday after appearing at the White House Easter Egg Roll. She told the children that if they eat right the majority of the time, then a splurge or snack is not going to hurt them. "I still splurge when I can, but that's why I try to exercise almost every day," she said.

Fraud runs rampant in Census Bureau

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning
