NYPD Commissioner says department

device that scans for concealed weapons

Get ready for scan-and-frisk. The NYPD will soon deploy new technology allowing police to detect guns carried by criminals without using the typical pat-down procedure, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Wednesday. The department just received a machine that reads terahertz — the natural energy emitted by people and inanimate objects — and allows police to view concealed weapons from a distance. “If something is obstructing the flow of that radiation, for example a weapon, the device will highlight that object,” Kelly said. A video image aired at a Police Foundation breakfast Wednesday showed an officer, clad in a New York

That´s nice.

Is there a device to scan politicians for brains, or souls?

God only knows what kind of damage/radiation this will direct into our bodies!

And here I thought citizens were protected from unreasonable search and seizure.

Exactly #3...totally UnConstitutional!! Are we going to have to start wearing coats of metal mesh???

When we get an xray, the tech leaves the room to avoid radiation zaps... Now we´ll be zapped on street corners?

Next they´ll be heating the gun up to burn a hole in the person´s side.If they´re legally registered, they´ll get a letter of apology.

A variation of this X-ray device coming to big brother drones near you. The drones, on gun detection missions, hover over your house and X-ray it. If firearms are located, you get a big letter. If you ignore it, a phone call, followed up with a knock on the door. How far fetched is my thinking? Posters let me know if I´ve slipped into the crackpot realm.

Folks, nothing in this article talks about this device emitting radiation. From the description it appears to be a passive sensor detecting radiation naturally emitted by the body.

One does not, or should not, give up their right to privacy just because they walk down a street. This will probably be another waist of tax dollars when the courts, hopefully, rule that this is unconstitutional.

Sounds like it will be similar to infra-red cameras. It will focus in on your cold, dead hands.

Radiation? Who that uses such a device really cares if they kill you with the radiation? It´s all about the misguided morons treating citizens like crap. Aren´t you used to it by now?

Well, recalling that the "real purpose" of all this hoopla "is" keeping us, and our kids especially, safe from wackos, I suggest using two readily-available systems now present everywhere in the US.

a. criminal records files: almost every perp has an encyclopedic rap-sheet on file

b. the courts: start imposing real sentences for the crimes on those rap sheets; they´ll get much shorter as the perps are locked up and not running loose, and we´ll have far fewer instances of innocents attacked, maimed, or killed on the 25th, 30th, or 40th arrest!

OP: Such a device would have fewer applications than a unicorn-horn buffer.

#8 is correct -- passive. Often-respected #11 is correct also.

#10: Ouch, but well-put. Thanks.

Bonner, 53, has represented Alabama´s 1st Congressional District since taking office in 2003. He was re-elected in November with no Democratic opponent. Bonner´s office had no immediate comment but said the congressman planned a "major announcement" at a 4 p.m. news conference today in Mobile. A hotly contested gun-control law that was passed in 2007 is finally ready to be implemented, Attorney General Kamala Harris said Friday: a requirement that every new semiautomatic handgun contain "micro-stamping" technology that would allow police to trace a weapon from cartridges found at a crime scene. The law, signed by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, made California the first state to require micro-stamping, which engraves the gun´s serial number on each cartridge. A second ´house of horrors´ abortion clinic is being investigated in Texas, just days after Dr Kermit Gosnell was found guilty of murdering newborns at his Philadelphia termination center. Houston doctor Douglas Karpen is accused by four former employees of delivering live fetuses during third-trimester abortions and killing them by either snipping their spinal cord, stabbing a surgical instrument into their heads or ´twisting their heads off their necks with his own bare hands´. Other times the fetus was so big he would have to pull it out of the womb in pieces, Karpen´s ex-assistant, Deborah Edge, said

President Francois Hollande will decide by the end of July whether France should impose new taxes on technology giants like Apple and Google to finance cultural projects, a move that could feed into an anti-business image days after a spat with Yahoo!. The Socialist government asked former Canal Plus CEO Pierre Lescure to find new ways of funding culture during an economic downturn, in line with France´s "cultural exception" argument that such projects must be shielded from market forces. While far from becoming laws, the proposals could worsen tension between France and technology giants after Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg

Montgomery, Alabama – Acting state Democratic Party Chairwoman Nancy Worley lowered her head and slowly shook it side to side when summing up the financial condition of her once powerful party. "We´re broke, broke, broke," Worley told the party´s Executive Board in a special called meeting Frida. How broke is broke? Worley didn´t sugar coat the answer. "This is my 18th day as chair and thirty minutes after I took over on April 22nd the landlord of the building where our party headquarters are came in and said he wanted us out, that the rent was overdue and was always overdue,"

Trenton — Police officials are examining the response to a 911 call Sunday night that left a city man struggling with an intruder at his building without any officers arriving. Dan Dodson said it was 20 or 30 minutes before two officers eventually arrived in response to his wife’s calls to police telephone numbers. “We’re looking into it to determine if the proper protocols were followed,” Lt. Steve Varn said yesterday evening. Yesterday, Dodson said he was deciding where to buy a baseball bat in case someone else was able to slip into his home. He believes one of the two

The Internal Revenue Service relies on technology more than ever to sniff out tax cheats using robo-audits and data mining—but so far it has caught lot of minnows, and big fish are still eluding detection. Even as millions of people´s accounts are screened online and matched against their digital files elsewhere, the IRS´s data-detection tools come nowhere close to collecting the $400 billion in tax dodges estimated to take place each year. Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose

On Wednesday, Drummer Lee Rigby of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, a man who had served Queen and country honorably in the hell of Helmand Province in Afghanistan, emerged from his barracks on Wellington Street, named after the Duke thereof, in southeast London. Minutes later, he was hacked to death in broad daylight and in full view of onlookers by two men with machetes who crowed "Allahu Akbar!" as they dumped his carcass in the middle of the street like so much roadkill. As grotesque as this act of savagery was, the aftermath was even more unsettling

MARK LEVIN: So why didn´t Chairman Issa hold an investigative hearing a year ago? Why didn´t Chairman Camp, all Republicans, hold an investigative hearing a year ago, and all the other tripping over themselves right now? I´ll tell you why. Because the establishment Republicans, the RINO Republicans, despise the Tea Party. They despise the conservative movement. We exist to be managed, to be shuttled to the polling place, to vote for their candidates. The Karl Roves of the world, and all the rest of them. They fight us in the primaries, they fight us at the grassroots.

Washington rumor has it that Obama wants to be U.N. Secretary General. There are several reasons that make that likely, and if it´s true, it throws new light on a lot of Obama´s oddities -- including his Royalty Bows, his Apology Tours, his Muslim Sellout, and the Benghazi Cover-Up. But first -- why would Obama be planning to become the chief of the U.N. before he has even finished his second term?

Fox News chief Roger Ailes has sent a memo to his subordinates at the leading cable news network. He sent this memo to his staff today in connection with the federal investigation into an alleged leak to Fox News reporter James Rosen, a story that the Washington Post’s Ann E. Marimow broke earlier this week. The memo’s a masterpiece, too. For all those who wonder what it is about Ailes that endears his people to him — and that makes him such a good interviewee for any media reporter lucky enough to get an audience
