| Today, the New York City Council was the first in the nation to pass a law that prohibits employers from considering an applicant’s current employment status while making their hiring decisions. Job advertisers have long filtered applicants according to their present employment status, selecting only those persons who are currently employed. Makes no sense, When filling out the application a person is asked for the current employer and the prospective employer will check and confirm employment.If someone doesn´t want to provide that info they don´t get the job.The NYC council comes up with the dumbest ideas.Very poor leadership

I taught graduate courses in Human Resource Management for a quarter of a century, and would note that federal employment laws are suffocating to the employer. And if you add in state and local employment laws, especially from the far left states, you can get a sense about the likelihood of a company expanding in one of those states.
This latest one is a pip.

So can the applicant volunteer the information? If not, is it a restraint of free speech?
Can they confirm anything with your last employer?
This reminds me of proposals intended to help ex-convicts find jobs by shielding various information. I don´t know how many of those well-intended laws are on the books in various places.

Useless law since your employment status is very apparent by the employment dates you list on your application. On the other hand, what in heck is wrong with employers in this economy who´ve decided to not even look at unemployed people. You are too stupid to run a business if you use employment status as your first criteria in these times and I hope anyone who does this finds themselves unemployed so they´ll know what an evil fool they´ve been.

WASHINGTON -- Michelle Obama said Wednesday that stories of toil and sweat by slaves once held at a historic home within sight of the White House are an important part of U.S. history, including her own personal story, and are "as vital to our national memory as any other." The first lady commented as American Express announced its donation of $1 million to the White House Historical Association to preserve Decatur House and pay for education programs for children. The nearly 200-year-old house is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and operated by the association.

Here’s an indication of how burdensome student loans have become : About one-third of millennials say they would have been better off working, instead of going to college and paying tuition. (Snip) Delinquencies are also on the rise. The number of borrowers who are at least 90 days late on student loan payments has jumped from 8.5% in 2011 to 11.7% today, according to a study by the New York Federal Reserve. The problem sometimes is that not all college educations are worth their cost since they can’t guarantee a high-paying job to help pay off that student debt.

The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations has found that Apple in 2012 alone avoided paying $9 billion in U.S. taxes, using a strategy involving three offshore units with no discernible tax home, or "residence." Americans in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll sharply reject special scrutiny of conservative groups by the Internal Revenue Service, suspect an administration cover-up of the Benghazi incident and express substantial distrust of the federal government more generally. (Snip) Longer-term impacts of contentious current issues remain to be seen, but there´s potential for significant damage to the administration. Americans by a vast 74-20 percent see the IRS´ behavior as inappropriate, with most feeling that way strongly - and 56 percent see it as a deliberate attempt to harass conservative organizations, not a mere administrative error.

A massive tornado ripped through Moore, Okla., Monday afternoon, leveling a huge swath of a residential area in the suburb of Oklahoma City. Video footage from KFOR-TV showed houses, businesses and at least two schools completely demolished, with cars strewn about. Police and emergency crews have begun to respond, but debris has clogged roadways. There is no tally yet on injuries or deaths, but news anchors said significant casualties are expected. LOS ANGELES - More poor people live in the nation´s suburbs than in urban cities because of affordable housing, service-sector jobs and the increased use of housing vouchers, according to a study released Monday. The number of those in poverty living in suburbs jumped 67 percent between 2000 and 2011, a much larger increase than in cities, researchers for the Brookings Institution said. Suburbs, however, still have a smaller percentage of the poor than cities do. The report notes that poor people were pulled to the suburbs by more affordable homes and followed jobs that were often low paying.

Minnesota drivers are paying the highest gas prices in the 48 contiguous states, with the average price statewide running at $4.27 per gallon, according to AAA’s daily survey of gas prices. Average prices are even higher in the Twin Cities metro area at $4.31 for a gallon of unleaded gas, the report said. Drivers in Hawaii were paying the highest, at $4.35 per gallon, while those in Tennessee were paying the lowest, at $3.26. The national average is $3.63. In Duluth, the average price Monday morning was $4.32, while in Rochester it was $4.12. St. Cloud stations were reporting $4.24

One of two men allegedly being questioned in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings was shot and killed by an FBI agent in Florida on Tuesday, (Snip)A friend of Ibragim Todashev said he and Todashev were being investigated as part of the Boston bombings. He said Todashev, 27, knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because both were MMA fighters. The man claims he and Todashev were interviewed by the FBI for nearly three hours on Tuesday. The friend said he left the interview, and when he came back to the apartment he found that there had been a shooting.

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W.
