Soldiers, officers and enlisted, use callous-sounding words to make what they do a little easier. It, by no means, signifies an indifference to death and dying.
Just sleep beside one of these men for 35 years and you know how deeply they are affected by what they do. I thought Captain Wales spoke seriously and reverently (in soldier-speak) about his work.

The same can be said of police officers, firemen and even nurses. If your job is dangerous or you deal with death on a daily basis, you cope anyway you can and if outsiders don´t like it, well ...

Nato has handed over security for the whole of Afghanistan for the first time since the Taliban were ousted in 2001. At a ceremony in Kabul, President Hamid Karzai said that from Wednesday "our own security and military forces will lead all the security activities". A series of shootings this weekend has Chicagoans on edge. A total of 11 separate shootings since Friday night have resulted in seven deaths and at least 30 injuries in the Windy City.
