Welcome to your new home,

They have been billed as villas, but that would be using the loosest sense of the word. Stretching as far as the eye can see in rows upon rows of arrow-straight uniformity, this development conjures images of a concrete slum or a prison block rather than a plush new housing estate. They are among more than 1,000 grey houses, each spaced just a few feet apart, that have been built in Lingshui County in the Hainan Province of China. But their monochrome appearance hasn´t put off the locals. Around 3,500 villagers have started to move into 1,029 new apartments,

My guess is that to the people who move in, it is a step up. We Americans are spoiled.

#1 is right. Most Americans have no idea how good they have it, especially the Lo-Fos.
On the other hand this town looks like it was extruded!

Other than what #4 said, this isn´t a prison town. The development isn´t finished, that makes it look bad. 253 sq meters is 2700 square feet. That´s a big home. Each has an upper level patio, front and back and a small front yard. Once the road is in and the homes moved into to it will probably look like any other large complex in the states.

Google "hutong" to see what city-dwellers have lived in in Beijing for centuries. The original zero lot line developments. These are at the stage where any development looks pretty sterile and as at least one poster has said they are a step up for these people.

As #7 wrote, you can see something very similar here in Las Vegas, and likely other hot spots as well, though not in those quantities. At the peak of the frenzy a few years ago, new projects were popping up everywhere daily ("affordable housing"). Today, drive out to the edges of the LV valley and there are tracts that look strikingly similar to the photos in this article. I´ve always wondered about the occupancy rate in those kind of projects ...

It does look like a prison-town. Not because it isn´t finished, but because it stretches as far as the eye can see in a really tightly packed monstrosity. I would get lost looking for my house if I were them!! Could you imagine living about a mile into that mess?? Yikes!

There is nothing so dreary as Communist architecture. For examples look at the Soviet slabs of indistinguishable grey that cover much of the Ukraine and the monoliths of North Korea. As P.J. O´Rourke put it so succinctly.

Question is: do they have running water and flushing toilets ?

It looks like a large house and better than what they are used to having. Looks better than our public housing.

Al Gore´s youngest daughter has gotten remarried under a historic tree in Santa Monica. Sarah Gore has a very casual outdoor service on Sunday morning outside a coffee shop with her famous father walking across a patch of grass that served as the makeshift aisle. Wearing a loose, off-white lace dress with bell sleeves, Sarah made her way towards her groom, realtor Patrick Maiani, who was waiting for her beside the outline of a heart in the shape of rose petals. The brief service was officiated by a female religious leader and attended by about a dozen invited guests. As a young reporter, I once expressed shock at how routinely and reflexively government officials lied to the press. A savvy newspaper vet who overheard me just smiled and told me not to take it personally. “Why shouldn’t they lie to you?” the late, great Murray Kempton asked. “They lie to themselves all the time.” His observation came back to me as I read about President Obama’s trip to Asia. He’s going, the White House says, to tell our allies face to face that America is committed more than ever to their security and prosperity. In ordinary times, the trip and

WASHINGTON — Curt Clawson, a businessman who was little known months ago in Southwest Florida, won a contentious GOP primary Tuesday to fill the U.S. House seat left open by the scandalous downfall of Trey Radel.Clawson, 54, pitched himself as an outsider against more established candidates and was embraced by the tea party. He poured more than $2 million into television ads. In one, the former Purdue basketball player challenged President Barack Obama to a three-point contest. The Bonita Springs resident took about 38 percent of the vote in the Congressional District 19 race, besting several rivals, including state Sen.

IRS employees who had been disciplined for tax and conduct issues were nonetheless rewarded with monetary awards or time off, according to a watchdog report released Tuesday. The report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration found that while for the most part the reward program for IRS workers complied with federal regulations, employees who had themselves failed to pay their federal taxes and had discipline problems were also rewarded. "While not prohibited, providing awards to employees who have been disciplined for failing to pay federal taxes appears to create a conflict with the IRS’s charge of ensuring the

It seems only yesterday, before the soothing elixir of “hope and change” was spoonfed to us by present-President Barack Obama, that Republicans could disagree with Democrats without being branded “teabaggers,” KKK-members, anarchists, Nazis, bomb throwers, arsonists, political terrorists or extremists. The unspeakable crime of conservatives? Their heartless desire to live their own lives and to be left alone by the bullying U.S. government. What has been the conservative outcry since disco was still a thing? Follow the Constitution, be fiscally responsible, and restore limited government. SPRINGFIELD — As the General Assembly heads into its final month of session, House Speaker Michael Madigan said Tuesday that he doesn’t have enough votes lined up yet to extend the state’s income tax increase or raise the minimum wage. The speaker, talking to reporters the day he was easily elected to a fifth term as Illinois Democratic Party chairman, said voting to keep the personal income tax rate at 5 percent instead of letting it fall to 3.75 percent on Jan. 1 will be a “difficult roll call.” “Every person in the legislature is going to be called upon

How often have you heard a Democrat prattle on and on about how well Barack Obama has done with the economy, given the mess he inherited? Usually, it’s some version of, “Things are getting better, but the economy the President started with was so awful, so he’s done as well as anyone could expect.”When Ronald Reagan took over from Jimmy Carter in ’81, things were actually worse economically compared to when Obama took over from George W. Bush in ’08. Consider these three important comparisons of economic indicators, then and now: - Unemployment was at 10.8% versus 7.7% - Inflation (Consumer

The Obama administration is poised to entertain a flood of new clemency applications from thousands of federal prisoners who were given harsh sentences under mandatory-minimum laws following drug convictions, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday. Holder said in a short videotaped statement that he wants to shrink the federal prison population by a modest amount while ensuring ´that those who have paid their debts have a chance to become productive citizens.´ At the center of the move is a set of old sentencing rules that punished crack-cocaine offenders with more time behind bars than users or traffickers of powder cocaine.

The Citizens Commission on Benghazi, a self-selected group of former top military officers, CIA insiders and think-tankers, declared Tuesday in Washington that a seven-month review of the deadly 2012 terrorist attack has determined that it could have been prevented – if the U.S. hadn´t been helping to arm al-Qaeda militias throughout Libya a year earlier. ´The United States switched sides in the war on terror with what we did in Libya, knowingly facilitating the provision of weapons to known al-Qaeda militias and figures,´ Clare Lopez, a member of the commission and a former CIA officer, told MailOnline. Public Trust: Sixty-one percent polled say President Obama lies "some of the time" or "most of the time" on matters of national importance. Americans have to ask: Why do we let him get away with it? It´s no surprise that a Fox News poll of 1,012 registered voters last week found immense distrust of a president whose main domestic initiative was based on a lie. The shock is that the same poll found his disapproval level down to its lowest since last fall. Asked, "How often do you think Barack Obama lies to the country on important matters?" 37% replied "most of

Former Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) said a number of junior GOP senators considering a presidential run in 2016 do not yet have the experience — specifically naming Rand Paul (Ky.), Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas). The former 1996 GOP presidential candidate sounded particularly skeptical of Cruz in an interview this week with The Wichita Eagle. "A number of the younger members, first-termers like Rand Paul, Rubio and that extreme-right-wing guy, Ted Cruz — all running for president now. I don´t think they´ve got enough experience yet," Dole said. The 90-year-old former senator said, however, his main concern about 2016 is living

If Jeb reaches for the nomination, there will be a titanic battle between the party establishment and the Tea Party. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s strategist in 2008, insists that in the end Republicans usually settle on the most electable candidate. To get by, this Bush may be forced to trim his positions, although the cautionary tale of Romney suggests that he would have to tack artfully and carefully for the sake of the general election. Certainly he will have the resources to outlast, discredit, and disqualify his rivals.

Washington - Michelle Obama said "splurging is the key to life" if you regularly eat right and stay active. Her biggest guilty pleasure: French fries. "How would you appreciate vegetables if you never had chocolate?" she asked. "You couldn´t live without a little chocolate, a little French fries." The first lady took questions from children reporters Monday after appearing at the White House Easter Egg Roll. She told the children that if they eat right the majority of the time, then a splurge or snack is not going to hurt them. "I still splurge when I can, but that's why I try to exercise almost every day," she said.

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning
